Chapter 4

Author: Double Fish
Yara stood a short distance away and listened quietly. She did not say a word.

Quiana proudly sauntered over and looked at her with obvious disdain.

“You did a good job with the banquet. But there’s a small problem. There was no carpet in the hall. My dress got dirty. To make up for it, I want you to hold it for me.”

Yara kept her head down and said calmly, “Please wait. There’s a carpet backstage. I’ll have someone lay it out right away.”

Quiana’s face turned dark. She could not believe Yara had refused her.

Just then, Marcus walked over. He saw Quiana looking upset and rushed over.

“What’s wrong?”

“Marcus, I don’t want my dress to get dirty. I asked your secretary to hold it for me, but she wouldn’t. Is she still upset about what happened last time?”

Seeing Quiana feeling upset, Marcus quickly pulled her into his arms. He glared at Yara.

“It’s just a matter of holding some garment up. That’s your job. You’ve been a secretary for a long time. You can’t handle such a small task?”

The guests nearby whispered and laughed.

“A secretary dares to give Ms. Xanthe attitude? Does she even know her place?”

“Different people have different luck. The rich heiress is born to be pampered. Letting you hold her dress is already generous. Be grateful.”

Yara’s eyes fell as she heard their mockery.

She pushed down her feelings, bent down, and picked up the dress.

Quiana dragged Marcus around the house, upstairs and downstairs, just to make Yara suffer.

The hem of the dress was covered in pearls. Yara’s arms ached from holding it. She clenched her teeth and kept going.

Quiana was not satisfied. She had more wine poured and waved at Yara.

“I don’t want to drink tonight, but my friends came to the banquet. I can’t refuse. Drink all this for me.”

“I’m allergic to alcohol.”

“Marcus, look at her!”

Yara tried to explain herself, but Quiana started whining and acting cute.

Marcus was aware of Yara’s allergies. Still, he wanted to make Quiana happy, so he agreed.

“Don’t you carry allergy medicine? Take it first, then drink. You should be fine.”

There was no room for her to refuse. Yara felt her heart sink.

Her face turned pale. She stayed silent, took out her medicine, and swallowed a few pills.

Soon, people came over with glasses of wine, talking and laughing. Yara raised a glass and forced it down her throat.

One glass after another, her stomach churned. She felt like she was going to be sick.

Her head felt heavy. Her vision blurred.

The hall spun around her. She heard Quiana scream.

“Marcus, the necklace you gave me is gone! The only person who came near me was your secretary. She must have stolen it!”

Hearing the false accusation, Yara regained her clarity for a moment.

“Mr. Quinn, it wasn’t me.”

Marcus looked at Quiana’s teary eyes and then at Yara, who was drunk and unsteady. His face grew serious.

“There were a lot of people around. Maybe you dropped it somewhere. Let’s look for it first.”

Quiana would not let it go. She shook his hand away. “If it wasn’t her, then who else? I only care so much because it was a gift from you. Yet you’re protecting her. If you won’t search her, then don’t come near me again!”

With that, she turned to storm off. Marcus quickly held her and called the bodyguards over.

The next moment, a few bodyguards forced Yara to the floor and tore at her clothes.

Her mind went blank. She struggled, but she was completely overpowered.

Her shirt was ripped into strips. Her dress was ruined. Her skin was bruised and scratched, and some areas were bleeding.

A wave of humiliation hit her. She could not help crying and screaming for help.

“It’s not me! I didn’t do it!”

Her cries only brought more violence.

The bodyguards reached for her undergarments.

Marcus could not bear to watch. He tried to stop them when several servers ran over.

“Found it! The necklace fell on the stairs!”

Everyone in the hall immediately turned to look at the sparkling diamond necklace in their hands.

Marcus’ tense brow relaxed. He waved for the bodyguards to step back.

He picked up the necklace and put it around Quiana’s neck himself. His voice was calmer.

“The necklace is back. Stop being angry, okay?”

Quiana finally smiled.

She looked down at Yara, who was lying on the floor in a mess. She held Marcus’ arm and acted cute again.

“Good thing it was found. If not, I would have been upset for a long time. But your secretary suffered so much because of this. Should I apologize to her?”

All eyes in the hall turned to Yara, whose clothes were torn and disheveled.

She could only curl up and hug herself tightly under the hostile stares.

Through the pain, she heard Marcus’ cold voice.

“No need to apologize. She’s just a secretary. A little suffering is nothing.”

A year later, Yelena got a text from Yara. Yara was getting married and had invited her to be a bridesmaid. Yelena was thrilled. She dropped everything and immediately bought a ticket to fly out.Marcus, of course, heard the news from Yelena. His hand paused for a moment before he lowered his eyes and asked casually, pretending not to care.“Getting married already?”Over the past year, he had often heard about Yara’s life from Yelena. He knew she had a boyfriend who loved her. He never expected her to get married. He could not quite put his feelings into words. His vision blurred, and the letters on the page seemed difficult to read. From Yelena’s phone came a soft, gentle voice.“Yeah, it’s about time. I finally found the right person, and I don’t want to wait any longer.”It was Yara. Her voice was calm, but there was a hint of a smile. Just hearing her, you could tell she was happy.Yelena packed her things while talking on the phone.“Really? Are you planning to settle

Quiana had been through a terrible time. She barely ate and barely slept. Everything she had done to Yara had come back to punish her a hundred times over. She trembled in the basement. When the main door opened and light spilled inside, she did not immediately understand what was happening. When Marcus stepped in, she snapped fully awake. She scrambled toward him like he was her only lifeline and clung to him.“Marcus, I was wrong! Please forgive me! I’ll never bother you or Yara again. I’ll stay far away from now on. I’ll never get in your way. Please let me go. I truly know I was wrong!”Quiana begged and cried uncontrollably. She looked completely pitiful.Marcus said nothing. He studied her face carefully. All her innocence and beauty were gone. What remained was nothing but endless desire and greed. How could he have lost the most important person in his life over someone like her?The thought filled him with rage. He wanted to punish her in the worst way. But Yelena and Yar

It was not long before Yelena arrived. As soon as she got Yara’s call, she rushed over. The two of them had not seen each other for a month. The moment Yelena arrived, she threw herself into Yara’s arms.“Yara!”Yara’s expression softened as she caught her.“Yelena, you’re here.”They sat together and talked for a few minutes. When it was time to say goodbye, Yelena could not help feeling guilty.“I’m sorry, Yara. I shouldn’t have let my brother come after you. I’ve caused you so much trouble.”Yara squeezed her cheek gently.“It’s okay. Even if you hadn’t said anything, Marcus would have thought of a way himself. Sometimes it’s better to get the pain over with quickly. It was good that we got everything out of the way this time.”Still, Yelena felt bad. She had not expected Marcus to go so far. He had spent the whole night in the rain as if he did not care about himself. She looked toward Marcus, who was not far away, quietly watching them. She could not help asking the questi

Marcus sat in the coffee shop until it closed. Only then did he finally get up and leave. He did not know what to do. His chest felt tight with pain. The more it hurt, the more clearly he realized how important Yara was to him. He had lost her just like that.If only Quiana had never come back.If only he had realized sooner that he had fallen in love with Yara.If only he had not disappointed her.One possibility after another flashed through his mind, but there was no turning back.He wandered through the unfamiliar streets of a foreign city. Thunder split the sky, and heavy rain began to fall. People on the street ran for shelter and hurried home to escape the storm, but Marcus had nowhere to go.He walked in the rain and repeated Yara’s name under his breath. Before long, he was completely soaked. His phone suddenly rang. He picked it up with a flicker of hope. It was a message from Yelena.[Marcus, come back.]He stared at the words and felt drained. They had agreed to meet at a coffee shop. When Marcus pushed the door open, the bell above it chimed. He stepped inside and immediately saw Yara sitting in the corner. They had only been apart for a month, but it had felt like a year of agony. Seeing her again felt slightly unreal. She had changed a lot.Whenever she was with him, she had always dressed like a secretary because that was her role. Even after work, even when they tried different things at home, she had always seemed prim and proper to him.On that day, she wore casual clothes. Her hair was tied up, showing her slender, pale neck. For a moment, he felt as if he had gone back to the beginning, to the shy Yara who once had a quiet crush on him.He stood there for a few seconds before walking over with a smile.“Yara. It’s been a while.”He held back the urge to pull her into his arms. He looked at her face with open longing and fascination.“Let’s keep this short. I only agreed to meet because I want to make things

Yelena sent a message to Yara, but there was a time difference of several hours overseas. She told Marcus to go home first. She said she would let him know as soon as she heard back, but he refused to leave. He insisted on staying at Yelena’s place. He slept on the couch and woke at the slightest sound. Each time, he hoped it was a message from Yara. The next evening, Yelena finally received a reply.[Alright. I’ll meet him.]The message was short, but it gave Marcus hope. Yara was willing to see him. That meant there was still a chance for them.Excited, Marcus immediately booked the earliest flight available.Yelena grabbed his arm and frowned.“Marcus, rest for a day before you go. You haven’t slept properly in days, have you? Since Yara has agreed to see you, she won’t break her word.”Marcus pulled his arm away.“I can’t wait any longer. Ever since Yara left, I have been thinking about her every day. I just want to see her.”The tenderness in his eyes left Yelena deeply
