LOGINImmediately we arrived home, I wasted no time in getting down from the car and rushing to my room.
I was full of thoughts.
What I had overheard between my mum and father in law was confusing. What could they have been referring to?
I moved away from the door quickly when my mum was about stepping out and ducked into another hallway by the side. Good thing the house was full of hallways anyway.
I had so many unanswered questions. I didn’t know my mum knew Charles on a familiar level. Though I do remember my dad saying he had history with Charles, and it was not so good.
I hadn’t bothered to ask then because of the situation of things.
But now I felt like I needed to know.
It was not out of place for my mum and father in law to speak seeing as they were in laws. But so many things were not adding up.
For example, how conveniently my mother had “accidentally” spilled her drink on her dress just as soon as Charles had excused himself to take a call.
I needed answers. I wondered if I should confront my mum, but then me and Alexis didn’t exactly have a perfect mother-daughter relationship. So there was no point. Besides, I didn’t exactly love speaking to my mother except necessary.
Many of these thoughts filled my mind as the cold hands of sleep embraced me.

I had not stepped out of my room for two days. There was really nothing to do around and Aaron had said he didn’t want me “loitering” around the house.
I wasn’t even in the mood to get out of bed anyway so I just stayed in. Besides seeing Aaron’s face wasn’t one of my favourite things to do.
Heather constantly brought my meals and anything I needed up to my room.
But today I decided I had had enough of being indoors. I have never really been an indoor girlie, I was always outside, partying, shopping, hanging out with friends or any other fun activity.
I had called my dad and have him send someone bring my car over.
There were about five to six cars parked in Aaron’s garage but if he didn’t even want me using his dining I highly doubt he would let me drive any of his cars. So I just called for mine.
I had also told him I was going to stop by the office to see him. He was elated.
I got dressed in a black leather pants, a body hug white tank top that had a v-neck line but not so much to reveal too much cleavage. I had my hair in waves and I picked my favourite sunglasses and a heel to match.
I met Heather when I went downstairs and told her I was stepping out for a bit.
“Uhm ma’am,” she called as I was about leaving. She had not stopped calling me ma’am even after I told her to just call me Elizabeth
“I wanted to tell you that you could have your meals downstairs now if you want. The boss is out on a short trip” she said.
“Aaron traveled?” I asked.
“Yes ma”
“When?”
“This morning ma”
Of course he wouldn’t tell his wife he was traveling. I didn’t care anyway. He could travel to the stars and live there for seven hundred years if possible, his cup of tea.
I smiled at Heather and headed out.

My father was very happy to see me. I could see that immediately I stepped into his office.
“Elizabeth!” He exclaimed “you have no idea how happy I am to see you dear”
He smiled warmly as he stood up and spread his arms for a hug.
I relunctantly hugged him.
“How are you dad?”
“I’ve been better. I was pleasantly surprised when you told me you were stopping by” he said as we both took our seats, me sitting across him.
I shrugged “just wanted to see you. And know how you’ve been doing”
He had this solemn look on his face now “how are you? How is Aaron treating you? I know everything happened on short notice but I really hope you guys bond and eventually fall in love with each other. Sometimes love doesn’t just happen, it grows”
I almost laughed “I’m still going to get that divorce you assured me I would have later dad”
“Are you guys not bonding?” He asked, looking worried.
I shook my head “no dad. We are not. We live like strangers. He even brought his girlfriend home”
He raised an eyebrow, obviously shocked.
I waved my hands nonchalantly “oh never mind, it’s fine. Our marriage is for a reason and once it clicks, I’ll bounce”
“Can I ask a favour Elizabeth?”
“Dad the last time you asked for a favour, I ended up getting married to a stranger. I wonder what you are going to have me do next” I said wittily.
“No no” he shook his head “I was just hoping you would try, to you know get to know your husband better. He’s a wonderful man Beth. If you put in effort, he could learn to love you”
“Dad stop” I raised my hand signaling a pause “this wasn’t part of the deal. You didn’t mention anything about anyone falling in love with each other. You said I had to stay married till the company stabilized and that I could get a divorce. That you would support me. Why are you changing your stance now?”
“Don’t get me wrong. I’m not changing my stance dear, if you eventually still want a divorce I’ll respect your decision. I’m just telling you to try. You never know, you could find love in strange places” he said with a smile.
I shook my head vehemently “not interested, thank you. The love of my life is elsewhere and not in anyway like Aaron Vanderbilt”
He shrugged and said nothing.
“I’ve been meaning to ask you something dad” I asked and he gave me the look to go ahead “you did mention somehow that you and Charles had some kind of history. Would you mind if I ask what it was?”
I noticed him shift uncomfortably “why are you asking?” He asked.
“I’m a member of their family now, it won’t hurt to know about everything there is to know”
He was hesitant. I could feel it.
He was quiet for a while but eventually he spoke
“Okay I’ll tell you”
Vivienne strutted in with a heavy box in her hand and a bouquet. She struggled with it before she placed it on the center table.“I'm not here for you,” she said snarkily.“Obviously,” I said walking towards her. “Neither is there anyone in this house that you can possibly be here for. So I suggest you get out now”She rolled her eyes putting her hand on her hip. “Girl relax, I'm not here for you, I'm here for Aaron. I brought gifts for his birthday so you'd better calm your aggressive nerves”I looked at the box she had placed on the glass table, it had a transparent lid and I could see a cake with the inscription “happy birthday baby” written on top. Then there was a warped box with a ribbon and then the bouquet.I looked back at her. “Take your shit and get out”“You have no right to tell me to get out. Last time I checked, this isn’t your house”“This is my husband’s house!”“Get the fuck out of my face. I have no business with you” she looked behind me and smiled, I turned around
ELIZABETH’S POVThe silence that ensued after our last argument lasted for weeks. For weeks we completely avoided each other’s paths. Aaron and I moved around the mansion like strangers. Polite, distant, and careful. For the first week, whenever we crossed paths we’d brush past each other without as much as sparing a glance at each other. But from the second week, there were slight nods of acknowledgment and mumbled hellos when we met sometimes.I was angry. Hurt. Disappointed in him even.Disappointed that in the first hurdle we are experiencing as a married couple, the first thing he could think of was a divorce. So what if our families were messed up, what did that have to do with both of us?Anyway, that was by the way. I had thought about that question repeatedly and didn’t want to do more thinking.I barely left the house these days because there was pretty much nothing to do.My phone rang and I smiled at the caller ID.Noah.It was as if he knew I was going through a difficult
ALEXIS POVThe fourteen-day ultimatum I gave Charles came and gone without his message. He made it a duty to ignore my calls and messages and simply refuse any attempt I made to see him. This man was joking with me. He didn't know what he was messing with.I had nothing to lose, I had already lost my home, and my child, and I had been living in hiding because Bruce was out there looking for me and asking almost everyone I knew about my whereabouts. And I didn’t want to see him, at least not yet.As I paced around the room angrily, thinking of Charles and his unwarranted attitude towards me, my goal changed. If he doesn’t want me anymore, I would ruin him.I meant it when I said I’d destroy everything he owns and everything he holds dear, I wasn’t joking.Even if it was the last thing I did, I was prepared to take him down.I wanted to send a message to him, a deadly message but first things first, I needed to confirm something. So I picked up my phone and dialled a number.“Vivienne”
“I didn't peg you for a childish ball-less coward Charles. I guess you're not high and mighty after all” I said with a dry laugh after Joyce left.“You might want to keep your voice down, Alexis”“I don't care if you're in love with a hundred women in Manhattan. You're mine. And that's final. Whether you're crazily in love with your wife or you give her a thousand kisses in front of me, I really couldn’t care less. You owe me a debt Charles and I’ve come to collect it” I said as I walked further into the study, “And don’t you dare tell me to keep my voice down. You don’t get to tell me what and what not to do anymore. If I want to shout and let the world know you belong to me, then I would. There would be no stopping me. So try as much as possible not to piss me off. And that includes the stupid childish stunt you just pulled right now. For your own good, that must never happen again” I warned. He let out a tired sigh as he swiped his palm across his face. “What do you want Alexis?
ELIZABETH’S POV“I just don't think we should be together anymore” were Aaron’s words in response to my outburst. He just stood there, staring at me casually, like he hadn't just dropped a bomb on me.“W-what?” My voice came out lower than I had hoped it would.“This whole thing is messy. It's not something we can just come back from. Our families would never be united again”I blinked. “Are you crazy? Did you smoke something strong?”“What do you think is going to happen now Elizabeth?” he looked at me. “Do you really think your father is going to let all of this go?”He waited for me to answer. I didn't. Because I knew the answer to that. “Do you really think one big apology is going to solve all of this and Bruce forgives your mother and my mother forgives my father and then everyone is back to being a happy family and our marriage continues so peacefully? You think so?” he asked.I swallowed. No, I didn't think so. I didn't think it'd be easy. This was war. My mother wasn't backi
“Go on, deny it. I dare you” she said, looking at me, angrily.I took a deep breath. “I don't know what you heard, but it's not what you think, trust me”“Trust you?” she scoffed. More tears flowed from her eyes, and she didn't bother wiping them off. “I should trust you? You want to tell me you didn't meet up with Vivienne?”“I didn't exactly meet up with her. She came to the office yesterday, unannounced. And she was there today as well, but I sent her away”“You sent her away today or yesterday?”“I sent her away today”“And yesterday?”I shifted slightly, not because I felt cornered but because I didn’t know how to explain this without her misunderstanding.I took in a deep breath before I started. “She came to the office yesterday, unannounced as I mentioned earlier, but I was about to step out of the office and she didn’t come with her car, so I had to drop her off on my way there. That was all”She stared at me blankly for a few seconds. And in my heart of hearts, I prayed she
