23. Sister's War

Mrs. Alfred walked into the mansion with a sad expression. As she delivered the news of Maya's death, a heavy silence fell over the room. Lillian's heart sank, tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably. She collapsed to the ground, overcome with sadness.

Katherine, on the other hand, remained stoic and unmoved. Mrs. Alfred noticed Katherine's lack of emotion and gently asked, "Katherine, don't you feel any sadness about Maya's passing?"

Katherine glanced at her mother with a cold expression as she rolled her eyes heavenward. "Why should I be sad? Maya wasn't family," she replied curtly.

Mrs. Alfred was taken aback by Katherine's careless response. "But she was your foster sister, Katherine. You lived together for years. Surely you must feel something," she implored.

Katherine's eyes narrowed, a spark of resentment flashing in her gaze. "I've learned not to waste tears on those who don't matter," she retorted sharply.
