I didn't turn the lights on that evening.

I sat on the small couch in the guest house with my knees pulled up to my chest, still in the same clothes from that morning on the terrace, and I watched the room go from gray to blue to black without moving to stop it.

There was something almost peaceful about sitting in the dark, nbody could see my face there and nbody could ask me to explain it.

I heard the car before I saw the headlights sweep across the wall, and my whole body tensed, bracing for Nathaniel, for another conversation I didn't have the energy to survive.

But the knock that followed was different,it was softer and familiar in a way that loosened something in my chest before I'd even opened the door.

Marcus stood there in the porch light, his arm still in the sling, the bruise along his jaw fading to a dull yellow-green instead of the deep purple it had been at the hospital.

He didn't say hello,he just looked at me, at the dark room behind me, at whatever was written on my face that I hadn't managed to hide in time.

"You weren't answering your phone," he said.

"I didn't hear it."

"I called four times."

"I know,I saw them after."

He didn't ask if he could come in. He just stepped past me, careful with his bad arm against the doorframe, and reached for the lamp on the side table before stopping himself.

"Can I turn this on?"

"No," I said. "Not yet."

He nodded like that made perfect sense, like sitting in the dark was a reasonable thing to want, and lowered himself onto the couch beside me instead, slow because of his ribs, a small wince crossing his face that he tried to hide and didn't quite manage.

For a long time, neither of us said anything.

I could hear him breathing beside me, steady, unhurried, and somewhere outside a dog barked twice and went quiet, the main house was lit up in the distance, gold light spilling from the kitchen window, and I made myself not look at it.

"Bad day," Marcus finally said. Not a question.

"She left a note on my pillow."

"What kind of note?"

"Telling me to know my place." My voice came out flatter than I expected, worn down instead of angry. "I brought it to them. Both of them. I thought if I just showed them the handwriting, if I just laid it out plainly enough, someone would finally believe me."

"And?"

"She cried." I pulled my knees tighter against my chest. "She cried, and he put his hand on her shoulder, and somehow by the end of it I was the one apologizing for bringing it up."

Marcus didn't say anything right away,he just reached over with his good hand and found mine in the dark, not gripping it, not pulling it toward him, just resting there, warm and steady, the way he had at the hospital.

"I'm so tired, Marcus."

"I know."

"Not sleepy tired, the other kind. The kind where you start wondering if it's even worth saying anything out loud anymore, because no one's going to believe you regardless."

"I believe you."

"I know you do,but you're not the one who gets to decide what happens in that house."

He was quiet for a moment, his thumb moving slightly against the back of my hand, and when he spoke again his voice had dropped lower, careful. "You don't have to convince anyone in that house of anything, Elena. Not anymore. You don't owe them your evidence or your explanations."

"Then what do I owe them?"

"Nothing," he said. "That's the whole point."

I let my head fall sideways until it rested against his shoulder, careful of his bruised side, and he didn't tense or pull away, just let me stay there, his breathing slow and even beneath my ear.

"Can you just stay?" I asked. "You don't have to say anything else,I just don't want to be alone in this house tonight."

"I'm not going anywhere."

We sat like that for a long time, longer than either of us probably needed to admit out loud, the dark settling comfortably around us instead of pressing in the way it had before he arrived.

He didn't ask me to talk more than I wanted to,he didn't fill the silence just to fill it. He just stayed, solid and quiet beside me, and something about that steadiness made the ache in my chest ease, just slightly, just enough that I could breathe without it catching halfway.

At some point I must have dozed, because I woke to find the room still dark, my head still on his shoulder, his good arm now resting lightly across my back like he'd shifted at some point to keep me from sliding sideways in my sleep.

"You should go home," I murmured, still half asleep. "It's late. Your ribs."

"I'm fine."

"Marcus."

"I said I'm fine, Elena." His voice was soft, but there was something firm underneath it. "I'm not leaving you sitting alone in the dark tonight, not after everything."

I didn't argue again,I let myself lean back into him, grateful in a way I didn't have the words for yet, and for a while longer the guest house stayed quiet and dark and safe, the two of us the only people in it who mattered.

Across the yard, in the main house, a light was still burning in the study window.

Nathaniel stood there with a glass in his hand, untouched, staring out at the darkened driveway where a car he recognized immediately was parked, tucked close to the guest house like it belonged there.

Marcus's car.

He'd seen it the moment he walked into the study to pour himself a drink he didn't actually want, and he'd been standing at that window ever since, watching the guest house lights stay off, watching the shape of the car sitting there in the dark like a quiet accusation.

He told himself it didn't matter,he told himself Elena could have whoever she wanted over now, that he'd told her himself to stay away from the main house, that this was exactly the kind of distance he'd asked for.

But his hand tightened around the glass anyway, and he didn't move from the window, not for a long time, watching that car and waiting, with a feeling curling low in his chest that he didn't want to name.

I found them both on the terrace the next morning, Nathaniel with his coffee, Elora curled into the chair beside him with her knees pulled up like she was cold, though the sun was already warm enough to burn off the dew from the grass.I walked straight across the yard with the note still folded in my hand, and I didn't slow down until I was standing right in front of them."We need to talk," I said.Nathaniel looked up, his face already braced for something. "About what?"I held the note out, not to him, but to her. "About this."Elora glanced at it, then at me, her expression carefully blank. "What is that?""You know what it is. You left it on my pillow.""I don't know what you're talking about.""Don't." My voice came out harder than I meant it to, but I didn't take it back. "You were in the guest house, you went into my room and you left this for me to find, and I want to know why you think that's something you're allowed to do."Nathaniel set his coffee down slowly. "Elena, what

The guest house had its own kitchen, small but stocked, and that first morning I stood in front of the fridge for a while before making a plate of eggs and sitting down at the little table by the window to eat alone. From there I could see a slice of the main house, not all of it, just the kitchen window and part of the back terrace, enough to watch my old life keep going without me in it.By midmorning, Elora was out on that terrace in one of my old robes, the pale blue one nobody had bothered to pack for me.She had a coffee in her hand, my favorite mug, the one with the small chip near the handle that I had never thrown away and she was laughing at something on her phone like she didn't have a care in the world.I set my fork down.It wasn't about the robe or even the mug. It was how naturally she walked through those rooms, as if the two years I spent making that house a home had meant nothing.I finished the eggs without tasting them and rinsed the plate in the sink. When I looked

My hands were still shaking when I pulled into the driveway, and the front door opened before I even reached it.Nathaniel stood there, still in yesterday's clothes, his hair a mess like he'd been running his hands through it for hours,he didn't wait for me to get inside."Where the hell have you been?" His voice cracked through the morning air. "Twenty calls, Elena. Twenty.""I was busy.""Busy." He said the word like it tasted wrong in his mouth. "Doing what? With who?"I walked past him into the foyer, my bag pressed tight against my side, the folder inside it suddenly feeling like something he could see through the leather if he looked hard enough. "Does it matter?""Of course it matters." He shut the door behind us harder than he needed to. "You disappear all night, you don't answer your phone, and I'm supposed to just sit here and not wonder if you're with him again?""With Marcus, you mean.""Are you?""No." I turned to face him. "I wasn't with Marcus.""Then where?"I thought

Esther held my hand for a long moment, and I waited for her to keep going, to tell me the rest of it, but she didn't.“Grandma. Please.” I could hear my own voice shaking. “Who is that name on the paper?”She closed the folder slowly, like she was protecting something inside it, and shook her head. “Not today.”“Why not today?”“Because you've had one impossible night already, Elena, and I won't hand you a second one before you've slept on the first.”‘I don't need protecting.”“No,” she said, “you need time, there's a difference, and I've made enough mistakes in this family to know which one actually helps.”I wanted to argue,I wanted to reach across the table and open that folder myself and read every page until I understood, but there was something in her face that stopped me, something tired and careful, like she was carrying more weight than she was letting on.So I let it go, for now.Esther got up and moved to a small desk in the corner of the apartment, the kind with too many d

I didn't sleep at all that night.Instead, I lay in the unfamiliar bed of the guest house, staring up at the ceiling while the silence around me grew heavier with every passing hour. The room itself was perfectly comfortable, and honestly, that was the worst part of it,Nathaniel hadn't thrown me into some miserable corner or treated me like a prisoner. He had given me a beautiful space, soft sheets, and every luxury money could buy. Somehow, that luxury only made it hurt more,It proved he knew exactly how to be considerate…he simply never chose to be that way with me. My eyes drifted toward the window as the first pale light of morning slipped through the curtains. For years, I had convinced myself that Nathaniel's distance was just an innate part of his character…that he was a man who struggled to express himself, a man who needed time, or just loved differently but last night, when he opened that door and cold-bloodedly told me to leave, I finally understood the brutal reality.

The room went silent after the video ended. Marcus replayed the video again and again, but neither of us spoke. The grainy footage showed the hooded figure kneeling beside Marcus's car, tampering with it before walking away. Then, turned just enough for the camera to catch part of his face, it wasn

The room suddenly felt incredibly small, beween the decaying walls of the old apartment, the hidden lockbox, and the birth certificate trembling in my hands, everything else seemed to fade into the background compared to the words Marcus had just spoken."He's supposed to be dead."I stared at him,

The silence inside the hospital room felt heavier than a concrete marcus was the first one to break it, he slowly lowered himself back onto the edge of the bed, while his eyes locked onto mine."Did your grandmother really just say that Clara and Richard aren't your actual parents?"I swallowed har

The automatic doors of City Hospital slid open, and I rushed inside I even barely remembered parking the car.Just a few minutes ago, I had been standing face-to-face with my grandmother, the same grandmother I thought was dead ,the next thing I knew, I was racing through traffic with shaking hands,
