Adrian pressed both hands against the wound, blood slipping between his fingers no matter how hard he pushed.

“Dad. Stay with me.”

Charles’s eyes opened halfway, unfocused, searching for his son’s face.

“What did you and Richard discover?” Adrian said, voice cracking. “Dad, tell me.”

Charles’s lips moved. No sound came at first. Then, barely audible, “Don’t trust…”

“Don’t trust who?”

Charles’s eyes rolled back. His hand went slack in Adrian’s grip.

“No. No, stay awake. Stay with me!”

  • The Substitute Bride   Chapter 27: The Morning After

Claire woke to sunlight cutting across the sheets, and for a moment she lay still, aware of the unfamiliar warmth of another body beside her before she let herself remember why. The memory came back slowly at first, then all at once, and with it came a heat of shame that spread through her chest before she'd even opened her eyes all the way. She had let this happen. She had walked down that hallway last night and climbed into his bed, into everything they had promised each other this marriage would never become. She eased herself out from under the sheets carefully, trying not to wake him, and reached for her robe where it had fallen sometime in the night. If she could just get to the door before he stirred, maybe she could pretend this had all happened to someone else. "Where are you going." She froze with her hand already on the doorframe. Adrian was awake, watching her from the pillow, his voice still rough with sleep. "I shouldn't have come to your room last night," she said,

  • The Substitute Bride   Chapter 26: The Night They Broke

"What are you going to do about the suspension?" Claire asked as they walked to the car. Adrian looked at the message on his phone again, then put it away without answering right away. "I'm exhausted, Claire. I can't fight another battle tonight." "Are you giving up?" "No." He opened the car door for her. "I just need one night to breathe before I figure out how to take it back." His voice was calm, almost steady, but something in his eyes told a different story. Claire had watched him hold everything together all day, for his father, for the board, for her, and she wondered now if there was anyone left standing between him and all of it collapsing at once. * * * Neither of them spoke much on the drive home. Adrian stared out the window. For the first time since she'd known him, Adrian wasn't trying to fix anything. That silence frightened her more than the shouting would have. * * * It was already late when they reached the mansion. A maid asked if they wanted dinner prepar

  • The Substitute Bride   Chapter 25: The Silence Between Them

Eleanor came rushing through the hospital doors, her heels clicking fast against the floor, already scanning the corridor for someone to point her toward Richard's room. "Where is he? I need to see my husband." Claire stepped into her path before she could get further. "Mom. Wait." "Claire, not now." Eleanor tried to move around her. "I need to see Richard." "He's stable. Sedated. He's not going anywhere in the next five minutes." Claire held her ground. "I need to ask you something first." "Whatever it is, it can wait." Eleanor's eyes kept darting past her, toward the corridor, toward the room she hadn't set foot in all night. "It can't." Claire's voice hardened. "Why does he think I'm dead?" That finally stopped her. Eleanor's eyes filled with tears, but she quickly looked away. "He's confused. The injury. The doctor said—" "He was confused before tonight too." Claire stepped closer, blocking the path completely now. "He's been hiding something for sixteen years, and

Chapter 24: "It Was My Fault" Richard's eyes drifted toward Claire, and for a moment something like relief passed over his face. "Sophie." His voice was faint, but warm. "You're here." Claire's throat tightened. "Dad, it's not Sophia. I'm Claire." Richard blinked at her, confusion clouding the warmth away. "Claire?" "Yes. Sophia's twin. Remember?" She tried to keep her voice steady, though her hands weren't. "I'm Claire." The change in him was immediate. His eyes widened, and he began shaking his head, slow at first, then faster. "Don't," he said. "Don't say that name." "Why not? It's my name." "Stop it." His voice cracked. "Stop saying it." Claire looked at him as though he'd struck her. "Dad, I don't understand." Richard's breathing turned ragged, his eyes darting around the room like he was searching for an exit that wasn't there. Tears started down his face before he said anything else. "Claire died," he said. "A long time ago. My Claire died." "Dad, I'm right here. L

Police still lined the entrance where Charles's hospital wing had been sealed off, badges checked twice before anyone was let through. Adrian and Claire slipped past a checkpoint of officers as they left, reporters shouting questions from behind a taped barrier, cameras flashing against the dark. Adrian's phone buzzed as they reached the car. He glanced at it out of habit. Knight Holdings shares down eleven percent in overnight trading. He shoved the phone back into his pocket without a word. There wasn't room in his chest for that tonight. * * * The second hospital was smaller, quieter, though reporters had already found their way here too, a handful of them camped near the entrance with cameras aimed at every car that pulled up. Claire pushed through the doors ahead of Adrian. "Richard. Where is he." The nurse checked her screen. "He's stable, out of surgery." "What happened to him." "There was a car accident," the nurse said. "The vehicle went off the road. Your father sus

  • The Substitute Bride   Chapter 22: The People Left Behind

“Your father was attacked,” Adrian said, his voice low. Claire froze completely, the hospital noise around her fading to nothing. Then the shock broke loose all at once. “What happened? Where is he? Is he alive? Who did this?” She was already pulling out her phone, dialing Richard before Adrian could answer a single question. It rang and rang. No answer. She hung up and called again, her hands shaking so badly she nearly dropped the phone. “Claire.” “He’s not picking up.” “Claire, look at me.” Adrian took her by the shoulders. “He’s alive. He survived.” The words didn’t seem to reach her at first. She kept trying the number, pacing a tight circle in the corridor, and when it went to voicemail a third time, something in her finally cracked. She sagged against him, crying into his chest. “We need to go to him. Right now.” “We will. I promise. But you need to breathe first.” She didn’t fight him this time. She just stood there, held together by his arms, until her brea
