Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
I was soaked to the bone, which only made Scott angrier. "Is this your idea of an apology? Fine. You asked for this!"

With that, he rummaged furiously through a drawer and flung countless photos into the air.

One of them landed at my feet.

My breath caught. It was one of my intimate photos, the very ones he'd sworn he had destroyed.

The employees lunged at them like madmen, snatching up the photos to "admire" them. Their leering stares nearly bored right through me.

I tore them to shreds in a frenzy, screaming hysterically, "Scott, you're a bastard!"

Scott's eyes darted away for a moment. Then he turned and instructed his bodyguards, "Take my wife home. She needs to cool off."

The bodyguards locked me in the basement at home, and in the darkness, I fell apart even more.

Years ago, I'd been kidnapped on my way to an international piano competition. It was in a dark room that those people had taken ninety-nine intimate photos of me.

I'd suffered from claustrophobia ever since.

I pounded on the door like a madwoman until my fingertips and nails were bleeding and my voice was hoarse from screaming.

Finally, Scott opened the door and glared down at me, his expression dark. "I thought you'd learned your lesson. I never expected you to go and post the video anyway!"

His phone screen showed that the fifteenth video had been posted successfully. It was the very video I'd recorded in the office.

I was about to explain that I hadn't posted it, that I hadn't even had time to hit the send button.

But the next second, the door slammed shut again.

Scott let out a cryptic snort. "I'll make you regret this!"

Soon, the sounds of a man and a woman tangled together drifted in from outside the door.

With every movement, the piano keys let out a muffled thud that struck my heart like a sledgehammer.

That piano was the only thing my parents had left me before they both died in a car accident.

On the eve of the international piano competition, they'd rushed back from abroad to watch me perform. That same night, they found out someone had taken intimate photos of me, panicked, and crashed their car.

I missed the competition I'd spent years preparing for, and I lost the two people who mattered most to me.

Now, their keepsake had become a toy for Scott and Kelsey to spice things up.

The woman's voice came out in broken gasps, "She's still listening next door... What if she posts another video online? That would be so embarrassing."

"Let her. Don't you think that makes it even more exciting? Hmm?"

The chaotic, pounding notes pierced my eardrums, and there was no shutting them out. I curled up in agony as my stress response kicked in, and I couldn't stop throwing up.

I had no idea how long the sounds outside went on before a video came in on my phone.

It was footage from the award ceremony at that piano competition years ago.

Kelsey stood on the stage holding the trophy, her eyes brimming with tears. "If my opponent hadn't run into a little 'accident', I probably would have had a hard time winning this award today."

She gazed tenderly into the camera. "I also have my wonderful boss to thank. He promised he'd make sure I took first place, and sure enough, I did!"

In an instant, the blood in my veins ran cold.

So my only rival in that competition had been... Kelsey.

When those people threatened me back then, they'd said, "If you dare go to that competition, we'll post all these photos online!"

So they'd been working with Kelsey all along.

But who was the "boss" she'd mentioned?

Just as I told myself it couldn't possibly be that much of a coincidence, the camera suddenly panned.

The face on the screen was unmistakably Scott's, full of doting affection.

"What do you take our relationship for? Something you can just throw away whenever you feel like it? And what do you take me for?!" Scott yelled.Seeing him so angry and defensive, I couldn't help finding it funny. I shot back, "Have you ever stopped to think about what you took me for?"Scott's breath caught, and he was left speechless. If he'd truly cherished our relationship, he wouldn't have cheated so easily. He certainly wouldn't have hired people to take intimate photos of me and used them to threaten me out of entering the competition. He'd done all of it just so Kelsey could win a competition. After a long pause, Scott softened his voice. "Jennifer, I never said I didn't love you anymore, and I never meant to hurt you. I just wanted to vent, and I lost control and let you see...""So it doesn't count as long as I don't see it?" I cut him off with a bitter smile. He and Kelsey had known each other for a long time.Back then, Kelsey was just an intern at the company, ye

The rock slammed into the back of my head, and my world went completely dark. When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed.A doctor walked over. "Miss, if the cemetery caretaker hadn't brought you in, I'm afraid things could have ended very badly."Overwhelmed with gratitude, I gave the old man all the cash I had on me. "Thank you so much."The caretaker sighed. "If Ms. Rowe hadn't deliberately sent me away, none of this might have happened... Take good care of yourself."As I lay in the hospital bed, everything that had just happened played out vividly in my mind.I hadn't been able to protect my parents' graves. I'd let them suffer every kind of humiliation on the anniversary of their deaths. And then there was the piano. Just like my relationship with Scott, it had been tainted, and it could never be washed clean again.During the days I spent recovering in the hospital, messages from Scott kept coming in on my phone. He was still taunting me, testing to see how I'd

Scott's head started buzzing. It took him a long time to get any words out. "Wh... What?"The man on the other end explained, "Didn't you have Ms. Rowe pass along the order to smash the cemetery? And tell us to teach that woman a good lesson?"He grew more and more smug as he went on. "I shoved all her parents' ashes into her mouth. Then she started screaming way too loud, so I knocked her out with a rock. She probably didn't make it."In an instant, Scott felt as if he'd been struck by lightning. "When did I ever say anything like that?! Besides, Jennifer is my wife. How could I possibly...!"Hearing this, the man on the other end panicked and hung up.Scott gripped his phone tightly, his mind completely blank. "Kelsey..."He rushed back to the lounge as fast as he could and kicked the door open with a bang.Kelsey was lying on the bed, resting. When she saw him, she bounced over and wrapped her arms around his waist, looking extremely pleased with herself. "Mr. Brophy, you

"How... how did this happen?" Scott backed away step by step, unable to believe what he was seeing. Both headstones had been reduced to rubble. Even the urns had been dug up, their ashes strewn everywhere.Even more horrifying was the blood splattered across the ground, so vivid it made his heart race."...Jennifer."His first thought was of her. He hurriedly pulled out his phone and called her.He prayed she would pick up, but all he got was a cold, robotic female voice."The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later..."The beeping on the line only made him panic more.Just as he was about to head out and search for her, Kelsey caught up to him. "Scott, why'd you just leave without a word?"She glanced at the wreckage in the cemetery and blinked. "I know it's not my place to say, but if you keep spoiling Mrs. Brophy, she'll only become more unreasonable. I can't stand seeing you humiliated like this...""What?" Scott looked a little confused.

At the cemetery, countless camera flashes were aimed at me, instantly dragging me back to that moment of utter humiliation.I curled into a ball, not daring to look at my parents' headstones, and bit the inside of my cheek until it bled.Like a walking corpse, I read from the , "I willingly posed for those intimate photos. I planned to use my body to create buzz for the competition, but it backfired, and I ended up getting my own parents killed..."Scott stood off to the side, his furrowed brow still not relaxing.Kelsey, meanwhile, showed off the medal around her neck, unable to hide the smug gleam in her eyes. The moment I finished reading the whole , the onlookers swarmed me in a frenzy."She's the slut, and she still tried to pin it on someone else. Shameless!""Those photos of hers are already all over the internet. She got what she wanted. Now she can go viral!""You'd never guess it. The dignified Mrs. Brophy is that loose in private. I saw the photos. She's a D cup at l

My phone suddenly felt like a hot potato, and I tossed it aside in a panic.Back when I'd been attacked, Scott had been the first to arrive. He'd gotten both me and the photos back, and blood had been spattered everywhere.I'd believed he was an angel sent to save me, that we shared some unspoken connection, and that was why he'd gotten there so quickly. Now I understood everything. No wonder those photos had been in Scott's hands all along, never destroyed. The person who'd really pushed me into the abyss was him.The truth was too much for me to bear, and I passed out. When I opened my eyes again, Scott was sitting by my bed, dark circles under his exhausted eyes.Seeing that I wasn't making a scene or screaming hysterically, he thought I'd finally learned my lesson. But he was about to be disappointed."Those people who threatened me back then... That was you, wasn't it?" I forced down the tremor in my voice, getting the words out one at a time.Scott's pupils flickered.
