"Dad, tell me this is a joke."

The conference room went dead silent. The directors seated around the long table exchanged uneasy glances before quickly looking away. At the head of the table, Kendall Shank calmly adjusted his tie and closed the folder in front of him.

"It isn't."

The two words landed like a hammer. Dizer Shank stared at him, frozen, wondering if she had misheard. Maybe she was just exhausted. Maybe this was one of her father’s twisted tests.

Desperate for answers, her gaze drifted to the large screen mounted on the wall. The announcement was still displayed in bold, unforgiving letters: SUCCESSOR OF SHANK GLOBAL LOGISTICS: CAMILLE SHANK.

Dizer blinked twice, but the name didn’t change. A strange, disbelieving laugh escaped her lips. "Camille?"

Nobody answered. Her eyes slowly swept across the room. Most of the directors completely avoided her gaze; some suddenly became deeply interested in their documents, while others just stared blankly at the table. None of them looked surprised.

The realization hit her chest like a physical punch. They already knew. Everyone in the room knew except her.

"Dad," she said, rising from her chair. "What exactly is this?"

Kendall folded his hands calmly on the table. "The succession announcement."

"I can read," she snapped, her voice sharpening by the second. "What I don't understand is why my sister's name is on that screen."

Still, no one answered. The heavy silence made her stomach twist. For ten long years, she had lived and breathed this company. Ten years of absolute sacrifice. She remembered being twenty years old and standing beside her father at freezing shipping ports. She remembered sleeping inside dusty warehouses during expansion projects, missing birthdays, skipping holidays, and sacrificing her personal relationships. All because whenever the company needed her, she showed up.

And now… Camille? Her sister who had spent years partying abroad? Her sister who had never attended a single board meeting, and barely understood the basics of how the logistics business operated? Dizer let out a humorless laugh. "You've got to be kidding me."

"The decision has already been finalized," Kendall said, his tone entirely flat.

The word struck her like a blade. Finalized. Not discussed, not debated, but finalized.

"When were you planning to tell me?" she asked sharply.

"Now."

A few of the directors visibly winced at Kendall's coldness. Dizer noticed, and a bitter part of her was glad. At least someone in the room possessed a conscience. She leaned forward, pressing her hands against the mahogany table. "Do you understand how ridiculous this sounds? I built half of this company."

"Dizer—"

"No!" she cut him off, her anger boiling over. "I negotiated our contracts in Lagos. I personally secured the expansion in Port Harcourt. I brought in our biggest clients. My blood and sweat are in this foundation!" Her eyes burned with unshed tears. "And you're handing everything to Camille?"

Kendall stood up. The movement signaled the immediate end of the meeting. Like prisoners escaping an execution, the directors quickly gathered their belongings and rushed out of the room.

“Dad.” Dizer swallowed hard, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. “Give me one reason.”

The room fell so silent she could hear the faint hum of the air conditioner. One reason. That was all she wanted—just one honest explanation.

Kendall looked at her. For a split second, something flickered in his eyes—regret, guilt, perhaps even fear—but it vanished too quickly to be certain. He turned his back to her and said quietly, “You wouldn’t understand.”

Dizer stared at him aggressively. “What?”

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“What does that mean?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he walked out of the room, leaving her standing entirely alone.

“Dizer!”

She ignored the voice calling after her as her heels struck sharply against the polished hallway floor. But the hurried footsteps behind her caught up quickly.

“Dizer, wait!” A hand grabbed her arm, spinning her around.

“What?” Dizer snapped.

Javier Shank immediately released her grip, a look of shock washing over her face. It would have been amusing if Dizer wasn’t so furious.

“Dizer, calm down,” Javier pleaded, noticing that people nearby were changing direction to avoid the brewing family scene. She lowered her voice. “Let’s talk privately.”

“No.”

“Dizer—”

“I said no.”

Her mother’s expression tightened into a desperate mask. “Please.”

Dizer crossed her arms, staring her down for a long moment before finally giving in. “Fine.”

A few minutes later, they were sitting inside Javier's private office. Once the door clicked shut, a heavy silence stretched between them. Dizer waited, watching her mother look exhausted, nervous, and profoundly guilty. That guilt only made Dizer's dread grow worse.

"Tell me why," Dizer demanded, her jaw clenching. "Why Camille?"

Javier looked away, unable to hold her gaze. "You know the reason."

The realization hit Dizer hard. "You do know."

Javier closed her eyes briefly. "Dizer..."

"No." Her heart started racing in her chest. "There is a real reason. What is it?"

"I can't tell you."

Dizer stared at her, then let out a laugh that broke halfway through. "You can't?"

Javier reached out and grabbed her hand, but Dizer angrily pulled away immediately. "Why can't you tell me?"

"Because it isn't my secret to tell."

Dizer rose from her chair, shaking her head in pure disbelief. "Unbelievable. For ten years, I've sacrificed everything for this family. Everything!"

"Dizer—"

"And now you're telling me there is some mysterious reason why I'm suddenly not good enough?"

Her mother's eyes filled with pain, but the sight only angered Dizer more. Tears weren't the answers she needed.

"I didn't say that," Javier whispered.

"You didn't have to."

Javier inhaled slowly, trying to steady herself. "There is something else you need to know."

Dizer laughed bitterly. "Of course there is. Lay it on me."

The older woman's expression turned deadly serious. "Dizer, sit down. Please."

Something raw in Javier's voice made Dizer pause reluctantly. She sat back down, her defensive posture unyielding. Javier clasped her hands tightly together. "The family hospital is in deep trouble. The debts are significant."

Dizer frowned. "How significant?"

"Hundreds of millions. We've exhausted almost every option."

The room suddenly felt smaller, hotter, and increasingly suffocating. Then came the next bomb.

"The Oscar family has offered assistance," Javier revealed.

Dizer’s brow furrowed. "The Oscar family?"

Immediately, one specific name came to mind: Doctor Liam Oscar. He was the country's most famous surgeon—a medical genius, a media favorite, a billionaire heartthrob, and a man completely out of her league. "What does a billionaire surgeon have to do with me?"

Javier looked away again, and Dizer's stomach twisted violently.

"No," the word slipped out of Dizer instinctively.

"Dizer—"

"No!"

"Their condition for the bailout is marriage," Javier confessed.

Everything inside Dizer went perfectly still. "What?"

"Their family wants a permanent alliance."

"No."

"Dizer, listen to me—"

"No, you listen to me!" She stood up again, her voice trembling with rage. "You let Dad replace me at the company, and now you want to sell me to a stranger?"

"It's not like that."

"It is exactly like that."

Silence stretched between them like a taut wire. Then, Javier quietly dropped the final cruel truth: "You and your sister are one, Dizer."

Dizer stared at her mother. For a second, she thought she had hallucinated the words. Then, a deeply painful laugh ripped through her. "If we're one, let Camille marry him."

Javier immediately shook her head. "No."

The answer came too quickly. Too firmly. It shattered whatever remaining hope Dizer had left inside her. Because in that exact moment, she finally understood. Whenever the family required a sacrifice, it was always going to be her.

That evening, Dizer sat entirely alone in her dark apartment. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights glittered indifferently. Her untouched dinner sat stone-cold on the table.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. MOM. She ignored it.

A minute later, it buzzed again. DAD. She ignored that too. Then a text message popped up: WE NEED TO TALK.

She tossed the phone aside, wanting nothing more than to disappear. Suddenly, a sharp knock sounded at her front door. She frowned. Who could possibly be here? Another knock followed, louder and more impatient this time.

Dizer walked over and pulled the door open, freezing instantly on the threshold.

A tall man stood in the dimly lit hallway. He wore an impeccably tailored, expensive suit that accentuated his sharp features and cold, calculating eyes. It was Doctor Liam Oscar.

Neither of them spoke for several long seconds. Liam looked her up and down—not romantically, and certainly not warmly. He was assessing her the exact same way a businessman evaluates a corporate proposal.

Finally, he spoke. "I'm only here because our parents insisted."

Dizer folded her arms over her chest, matching his coldness. "Good. I'm only standing here because mine insisted."

Something flickered across Liam’s face—a brief flash of surprise—but it vanished just as quickly as it came. Reaching into his jacket, he pulled out a folded document and handed it to her. "Read page seven."

Dizer frowned, taking the paper. "What is this?"

"Our marriage contract."

Her stomach tightened as she slowly flipped through the pages to find page seven. A specific section had been heavily highlighted. Her eyes scanned the legal prose: Neither party shall interfere with the personal or romantic life of the other.

Dizer looked up, her gaze meeting his unreadable expression.

"This marriage is strictly a business arrangement," Liam stated flatly. "No expectations. No emotional attachment. No love."

The words hung between them—cold, sharp, and final.

Then Liam leaned in slightly, his voice dropping. "Can you live with that?"

Before Dizer could even open her mouth to answer, a bright, melodic female voice suddenly echoed down the hallway.

"Liam!"

Both of them turned sharply toward the sound. A luxury vehicle had just pulled up to the curb outside the building. The driver's door opened, and a woman stepped out into the streetlamps. She had long, perfectly styled hair, a designer dress, and a flawless, radiant smile.

It was Camille Shank.

Dizer's heart dropped into her stomach. Camille wasn't looking at her sister at all; her eyes were locked entirely on Liam. And judging from the stunned, sudden recognition on Liam's face, he already knew exactly who she was.

The perfect smile widened across Camille's lips as she stepped into the building lobby. "Liam," she said softly, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Finally, we meet."

And for the first time that night, Dizer felt an icy wave of dread wash over her. She felt like she was about to lose something she never even knew she wanted.
