My palm closes over the glowing drop. I don’t smear it. I take it in.

I open the furnace a hair’s width and let it draw, not oxygen this time, not heat, but the loose trace of myself bleeding into the room, the dead signal on the tray and the live one charging the air.

I pull it through my skin the way a wick pulls flame, back into the vein it came from, until the two points of me collapse into one. The drop goes dark under my hand.

The room’s screaming silver beacon drops to a single source: me

  • The Surrogate’s Blade   Chapter 170 Mirrors in the Water

The sub hits black water belly-first.The whole hull screams.Sarah goes down on one knee and keeps one hand on my shoulder, the other on the leaking seal patch. The portable core is wedged under her thigh with a cooling line looped around it like a leash. The pilot lights stutter in three colors. Green for sealed compartments. Amber for damaged ballast. Red for the thin stream of water cutting across the floor toward my boot.Sarah reads all of it in a blink.“We are not sinking yet.”“That yet is doing work.”“So am I.”Leo says, “Undignified.”“Live with it,” Sarah says.“Trying.”Outside the port, the bay becomes a storm of bubbles, broken light, and bodies.Damian is at the manual gate wheel. Two mirrors are on him.He fights without elegance now. One hand on the wheel, one gun in the other, shoulder driving into the metal as he forces the mechanism down. A mirror cuts across his back. He barely turns. Another grabs for his marked hand. His boots slide on the submerged floor. He

  • The Surrogate’s Blade

“WHO?”

  • The Surrogate’s Blade   Chapter 168 Sarah's Corridor

I duck because my brother has become a hot black box and still knows when a hallway is about to kill me.The first shot goes over my head.Sarah is already moving.Empty pistol in one hand, stolen knife in the other, she drives her shoulder into the gunwoman's knees. The woman fires again as she falls. The round punches into the pipe over Damian's head and steam bursts out, white and screaming.Damian folds over the portable core. Not himself. The core. Of course.I put my blade through the gunwoman's forearm before she can correct the angle. She drops the rifle. Mara catches it, swings the butt into the second man's teeth, and shoves him backward into the crawl wall. The third raises both hands.Sarah points her knife at his eye.“If surrender is a trick, make it a fast one.”“No trick,” he says. “Renn is dead.”Mara glances down the shaft.“Renn was alive.”

  • The Surrogate’s Blade   Chapter 167 Extract Window

Sixty seconds is too much time to die in.Too little to save a brother.Damian kneels at the wall port with the portable core open against his palm. The data spike slides out of the casing like a needle from under a fingernail. He drives it into the port without hesitation. The core screams. Not sound.Heat.Blue-white heat flares through the four labeled segments and burns the wet fabric around Damian’s wrist.Memory. Voice. Field. Bio. The bio segment stays dark. Listening.Waiting for a body none of us have time to build.00:59.The first mirror hits the edge of the service tube.I cut her fingers off. No speech. No warning. She drops, catches the lower rung with her other hand, and starts climbing again.Expensive design. Annoying design.I kick her face and feel teeth break under my boot. The second mirror comes up behind her. Then the third. Sarah swears.

  • The Surrogate’s Blade   Chapter 166 Breach

Sarah says, “Do not push.” I laugh once.It is a horrible sound.“Tell the illegal person inside me.”“I am telling the illegal person holding the knife.”I let that stand. The service tube rolls under another impact from below. Metal buckles with a low animal groan. Water punches through a seam at the far end, not pouring now, jetting hard enough to strip paint from the wall.Sector 7 is no longer flooding. It is being eaten.Mara shoves the last rack survivor toward the upper crawl.“Keep moving.”The woman looks back. Bad idea. The lower shaft blooms white behind us, and for one second the woman sees the city she was raised under becoming a furnace. She makes a small sound, then climbs faster.Sometimes horror works better than courage.Damian snatches the portable core from the floor.00:09.00:08.“No,” I say

  • The Surrogate’s Blade   Chapter 165 The Core Goes White

The evacuation mouth is not a door. It is a wound in the city. We climb into it anyway.Sarah shoves the rack survivors up first. They go badly. Wet hands. Bare feet. Bodies that do not understand ladders without permission. Mara climbs beneath them, cursing every time someone freezes, using her shoulder as a step and her rifle as a hook.“Up,” she snarls. “You want orders? Up is the order.”They go up. The mirror reaches the closing door below. She puts my hand on the edge. Not her hand. Mine.Same knuckle shape. Same scar across the thumb from when I was thirteen and stupid with a kitchen knife. They copied even that from old medical scans, or from stolen memory, or from whatever dark little museum Silas kept of me.Her fingers curl around the metal. The door hesitates.“Bad,” Sarah says.Damian fires down past my hip.The shot takes the mirror through the wrist. Her hand brea

The lab doors haven't finished sealing before Julian drops into his chair. His breathing is wet and uneven, a man hyperventilating in slow motion. He won't look at me. His eyes are fixed on the space where Damian stood, as though the air there has been permanently altered."He knows," Julian says. T

  • The Surrogate’s Blade   Chapter 7 Vane's Hesitation

The silence Damian leaves behind has weight. It settles on my eardrums, humming with the residual ozone of his presence—the particular frequency of a man who bends gravity when he walks into a room. He's gone to handle the Harvester at the perimeter, and the warning he left with me is still sitting

  • The Surrogate’s Blade   Chapter 6 The Silver Pulse

The magnetic seal of the nursery door settles with a heavy, metallic thud that travels through the soles of my feet.I stay pinned against the wall, listening. My right arm is dead weight—a limb of static and ice from the bio-EMP I channeled through the locket. The DNA Key collected its tax in full,

Forty percent. The ticker doesn't blink. It ticks upward, one decimal place at a time, with the indifferent patience of a machine that doesn't care what it's dismantling. On the stolen tablet's screen, my skeleton burns incandescent silver—a lattice of high-conduction filigree where bone should be.
