PROLOGUE

They said perseverance and patience always paid off. But as Rosa Hamon stood in the back of a crowded bus, her damp résumé folder clutched to her chest, she was starting to doubt it.

This was her sixth interview in three weeks. Sixth.

The other five were….. disappointing and not worth remembering.

Now, as the bus jolted through the clogged streets of downtown Oak Avenue, she whispered a silent prayer that this one, this interview, would be the one she had been hoping for. God please.

Her reflection on the window didn’t inspire much hope. Dark circles framed her jade green eyes, her hair, once a glossy honey blonde, was now hastily tied in a high bun, and her blouse, the only crisp one left, had a little tear at the hem of her sleeve and she desperately hoped the interviewer wouldn't notice it. At this point, any silly thing could cost her this one thing! But she straightened her posture anyway.

"You are going to get this, Rosa", she murmured to herself. "You have to".

Her phone buzzed. It was her Aunt Nardine.

"You’ll do great, sweetheart. Just breathe. And eat something when you’re done, okay?"

Rosa smiled faintly. Aunt Nardine was all she had left, her late mother's sister, who’d taken her in without a single question when Rosa’s landlord kicked her out after missing two months’ rent.

She had been afraid that she would turn her back away, but the woman smiled affectionately at her, like the smile of a mother to her child.

Aunt Nardine had just opened her arms in warm embrace,

"We will start all over again, okay?"

And Rosa was determined to make that “start” mean something.

She glanced at the dashboard clock.

8:30 a.m.

Her interview was at nine. If traffic cleared soon, she’d make it. Maybe. Hopefully.

She had to.

But the line of brake lights stretching ahead told another story.

The bus driver muttered a curse.

“Accident up ahead. We’ll be here for a while.”

Rosa’s stomach dropped.

“No, no, this wasn't happening", she whispered leaning out the window to see rows of cars trapped with horns blaring and frustrations evident. Her hands began to tremble as panic started to rise.

She looked at the driver. "Can you let me out here, please?"

He frowned. "Ma’am, we’re in the middle of-"

"-Please!" she cut in, her voice cracking a bit. “I can run the rest of the way!”

The man hesitated, then sighed and opened the door. It was her business anyways.

Rosa leapt out, clutching her folder to her chest. Cold morning air hit her face hard as she landed on the asphalt and she felt her body shiver a little. The sounds of the city swallowed her instantly. Horns, engines, and the distant wail of sirens.

Her heels clicked frantically against the pavement as she swayed between idle cars, muttering words of apologies. Some yelled at her but she wouldn't stop. She couldn't stop. She wasn't going to lose this chance!

If this passed her by.....

Rosa clenched her hands into fists. No! She wasn't going to lose another family! And so she hurried with more determination fueled within her.

She reached an intersection where the lights were blinking red, warning of the jam. The pedestrian sign flickered, stuck mid count. She looked left, no cars were moving. Right, they were putting on their ignition and ready to move. If she could just run very fast, she would be able to run past the cars.

"I can make it", she breathed.

And then, she ran. But the world exploded a second later.

A blaring horn. Tyres screeching. A flash of white. A scream. Rosa felt her life flash in her eyes.

Then pain, sharp, blinding and everywhere.

Her body lifted from the ground before she even realized what had happened. Her folder flew from her hand, pages scattering into the air like nothing. Time slowed and then she hit the pavement. The ringing pitch in her ear increased and Rosa felt her vision blur. People were shouting, faces rushing toward her, their mouths moving with no sound. She tried to speak. To say she was fine but her throat burned, and she felt choked.

A man’s face appeared above her - sharp jawline, ruffled dark hair, grey eyes as cold as steel. He was dressed too perfectly for this chaos. A dark suit, a loosened tie, and an expression that wasn’t panic, but anger.

He turned away, yelling into his phone.

“Get an ambulance, now!”

Her breath shuddered. “H-hel-p,” her eyes weakened and she felt this was the end.

Was she going to die? What of her aunt? She needed her. She gasped for air and the man immediately placed his hand beneath her head.

“Stay awake”. His tone was firm, commanding, the kind of voice that wasn’t used to being disobeyed and she immediately felt drawn to it.

“You’re going to be fine.”

She focused on that voice, trying to hold onto it as everything else dimmed. His cologne, clean and expensive, wafted into her nose.

Her lips trembled. “I… I have an interview.”

His brows furrowed, and for the first time, his composure cracked. “What?”

She smiled weakly . “I can’t… miss it.”

My aunt needs me.

Rosa felt her body sway and before everything turned dark, she had heard someone yell, “Sir Wade!“

And then her body went still.

That moment….the desperation in her eyes, the tremor in her voice, clung to him like a gum, refusing to let go.

As Rosa was lifted into the ambulance, a piece of paper fluttered against his shoe. He bent to pick it up.

It was her résumé.

Rosa Hamon. Age 23………

He stared at the name for a long moment, then folded the paper neatly and slipped it into his coat pocket.

“Sir Wade! Are you okay?“

His assistant ran to him, worry evident in his voice but his boss's demeanor was that of bleakness, and he stood there not saying a word nor moving.

A single crash could literally change the fate of someone and for Rosa Hamon and Alexander Wade, that was the day it did.

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 72: The Woes of Love

Rosa sat in Alexander's study staring at nothing.Old photos of her mother were edited into grotesque collages online, demeaning her dignity. Anonymous accounts dissected her smiles, her posture, the way she leaned into Alexander in public. Everything became evidence. Everything became ugly. Even a little raise of a brow on why the clouds were about to rain, seemed to be some suspicious movement.“Maybe she's thinking of how to twist him further.”Only a few, though, sympathized with her.“Her mother was a mistress. Yeah, and so what? Isn't she human?”“Most of us judging her, have done worse.”“If she's a gold digger, I don't blame her. I would do the same if I were in her shoes.”“Honey, life can be hard, okay? Leave Rosa the hell alone!”“How are we sure this news is even true?”And just these few words, were able to give Rosa hope. She sat in the study, the curtains drawn, the room dim despite the day outside. The study smelled faintly of leather and old books. She had chosen it

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 71: Across The Media

Susan Wade did not sleep that night. She sat in her room long after the house had gone quiet, everyone had retired to their bed. Her reflection stared back at her from her vintage mirror.Pain had knocked her harshly earlier. But now the pain had hardened. She reached for her phone. There were many ways to destroy a person, she knew that. She had built a reputation, understanding exactly where pressure fractured bone and reputation alike. Money could silence, accidents could happen. But public opinion… public opinion was a wildfire. And Rosa Hamon had a name that burned beautifully. She would never refer to her as Rosa Wade, over her dead body. She dialed a number she rarely used.“Good evening, Mrs. Wade,” the voice answered smoothly.“I want a story out by morning,” Susan said without beating around the bush. “Not rumors. These are verified facts, clean enough to look accidental.”There was a pause. “About?”“Emilia Cole,” Susan replied, her voice clipped. “Former worker of the Wade

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 70: History Won't Repeat Itself

Susan Wade had always believed pain announced itself. That it arrived with screams, with breaking glass, with bodies collapsing under the revelation. She had not expected it to come quietly, wrapped in a name typed neatly on a private investigator’s report.Emilia Cole. The name sat inside her like a stabbed blade.Susan stood alone in her bedroom, the door locked and the curtains drawn despite the late morning sun. The house buzzed faintly outside, with whispers and footsteps and the aftershocks of chaos, but in here, everything was still. She clenched her fists.Emilia Cole. That bitch! She gritted her teeth. She had read the name a hundred times since dawn, hoping it would blur into meaninglessness, hoping exhaustion would turn it into ink without memory. But it only grew heavier and more realistic. A wound that refused to close.Susan inhaled deeply, her chest tightening as something old and ugly clawed its way back to life. Not her, anyone but her.She squeezed her eyes shut, as

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 69: A Losing Game

Rosa lay on her bed, crying until her eyes burned. Why did these things keep happening to her? Just when she thought she had finally found peace, trouble struck again. What hurt the most was Alexander’s reaction. She understood his internal battle, she truly did, but she had hoped it wouldn’t touch them. She loved him too much. She couldn’t bear to lose this.Coughing, she pushed herself up and grabbed the glass of water from her nightstand, gulping it down. The ache in her chest refused to ease. Then his mother’s words echoed mercilessly in her head.“Her mother was your father’s mistress!”Rosa’s grip tightened around the glass. That wasn’t possible. Her mother would never have done that. And yet, somewhere in the back of her mind, a small, traitorous voice whispered… ‘What if?’Because the truth was, Rosa never really knew what her mother did for a living. She remembered the later years, the poverty, the way her mother would stare into nothingness, sometimes crying, warning Rosa ab

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 68: Slap in the Face

Rosa stared dumbstruck at his mother's spiteful words. What?!“Ma’am please. I know you don't like me, but bringing my late mom into this is too far.”She could at least honor the dead.Mrs. Wade's eyes went to her sharply and then she broke into a cold humorless laugh. Rosa and Alexander exchanged looks before facing her again.“Look at this fool. You think I would stoop so low as to try and use your slut mother just to prove a point?”Rosa's jaw clenched and her gaze on the woman hardened.Susan chuckled, walking closer to Rosa, who stood her ground. Their eyes met in an unwavering bicker.“Or are you going to deny..” Susan continued, “that Emilia Cole was your mother?”Rosa's eyes widened. She knew her mother?! Her lips parted to speak but then it closed reluctantly.Alexander immediately pulled Rosa to him, protecting her from his mother.“Mom, please. It's too early for your shenanigans.”His mother smirked and looked over to Mrs. Dill whose face instantly paled.“You think I'm m

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 67: What?!

A few hours earlier…..Susan sat in her bathtub, enjoying the tranquility and warmth of the water. She tilted her head slightly to one side, a dull ache settling in.“Oh dear. Not getting young again, I guess,” she chuckled dryly. Her lips thinned when her phone suddenly rang. She sighed. Who would be calling her at three in the morning?Standing up, not bothering to wipe the water from her body, she walked to the nightstand and checked the caller ID. Her eyes widened slightly before she immediately swiped to answer.“Hello?”“It didn’t work!” Daphne yelled from the other end, and Susan felt the urge to roll her eyes.“Calm down, Daphne. It hasn’t been long since you came. Be patient.”“Be patient? Until they fall more for each other?!”Susan sighed. “Calm down. Alexander is not that easy,” she clicked her tongue. That was usually a good attribute, just not in this case.“Look, Daphne. You know why I reached out to you first. Deep down, I know he never stopped loving you.”Daphne sco
