Chapter 4

Author: Anonymous
The next days were spent preparing to leave.

Checking my phone was a mistake. Felicity's latest post made my blood run cold. It showed Julian locking fingers with her, captioned, [It's always been you.]

Comments from our common friends flooded in.

[Congrats, lovebirds!]

[Felicity and Malcolm are endgame!]

[Can't wait for your wedding!]

She didn't respond to most, but under the one about us, she wrote, [Not him.]

My inbox was flooded with questions about our breakup. I ignored them. Whether she posted to spite me or celebrate her freedom, I didn't care. Neither did she.

Julian sent me a friend request, his intentions obvious. I had seen the avatar countless times. It would flicker when Felicity was in the shower or about to go to bed.

Though I never checked their chat history, every time she saw a message from him, a smile would unconsciously curl at the corners of her lips.

I accepted the request, and he messaged me instantly.

[Seriously, what do you have on me? Your ten yea

Tracy stepped between us, grabbing Felicity's wrist with a steel grip. "Lay a finger on my boyfriend again, and you'll wish you hadn't."Felicity froze, stunned.Julian, fuming that she'd ditched him to me, tried to stir the pot. "Moving on already? What about your ten years?"While the two women sorted their drama, I turned to Julian and swung, my fist connecting with his jaw.He stumbled, not expecting violence. He ran to Felicity, whining like a kicked puppy."You wanna talk about moving on?" I scoffed. "Look in the mirror, you hypocrite."For once, Felicity didn't jump to his defense. I could see in her eyes that she was starting to see through his act. Before, their fling was short, so he could keep up the charade. Now? She looked at him with nothing but exasperation. She shook him off and turned back to me. "I screwed up. I thought he was the real deal, but I was wrong. I can't let go of us.""I can," I said, not batting an eyelid.I took Tracy's hand and strode out of

I blocked Felicity's number. Her family visited a few times, but my dad sent them away with a few choice words. He wasn't ready to let me go abroad until this mess was settled, so I agreed to a blind date he arranged. In our circle, blind dates were business deals dressed up as romance. I used to turn my nose up at arranged marriages, thinking love was the only thing that mattered. Now I saw a decade of love collapse like a house of cards. Love wouldn't last without something solid underneath.I sat in a restaurant, waiting. Soon, a familiar face appeared. She clicked her tongue. "Well, well, Mr. Brown. Nobody wants you, huh?"I turned to see Tracy Obrien, my childhood nemesis. We'd been at each other's throats since we were kids, always one-upping each other. She'd gone abroad for high school, and I hadn't heard from her since.Ten years apart, she looked stunning, poised, and vibrant. Just like before, her tongue was sharp. She hadn't changed a bit.I rolled my eyes. "Though

I stared at Felicity, silent and defeated. Then I threw her words back at her. "This is exhausting. Stop bothering me. I'm done."Years ago, when I had suspected an affair and confronted her, she'd said, "Can't handle it? Then we're done."I had been gutted by her sharp tone, the thought of losing her like a knife in my chest. I'd begged, "Can't you end it with him?"She'd scoffed, "Stop clinging. It's exhausting!"Her expression darkened as she swallowed the bitter pill, but I felt nothing.I missed my flight, but my dad stopped me from rebooking. "Handle your business here first."He was right. The Hills were still a loose end.Felicity wouldn't take no for an answer. She dragged me to her car, heading for our old shared apartment. "Let's forget the past. You want to get engaged? We'll do it tomorrow. No interruptions this time."She deleted her post and sent Julian a voice message right in front of me. "The person I love has always been Malcolm. Don't call me again."She bl

Felicity stared at the ground, silent as Robert scolded her.He turned to me with a warm smile. "Malcolm, you're the only guy we see as family. Forget about going abroad. Come with us and finish the engagement ceremony. I'll make sure she cuts that loser off."He nudged her to speak, while her mom looked conflicted.I understood why he was so desperate. Their family business had been a sinking ship before my family stepped in. The Brown Group's support had propped them up, giving them a seat at the table.I never used to mix love and business, but now it was obvious. Felicity's betrayal was no surprise, and the only reason she hadn't dumped me was my family's money. Her mother's hesitation lay in the fact that I'd cared for her during her illness. I'd treated her better than my own mom.She knew Felicity didn't deserve me, but she had no say in their family.I checked my watch, seeing it was time for security. "I'm sorry, but Felicity and I are over. Who she's with or what she d

  • The Tenth Time She Rejected My Proposal   Chapter 3

Once, I'd take any excuse Felicity offered, loving her despite Julian's apparent games. Not tonight. I was done. Her face twisted, either because I'd struck a nerve or because she couldn't stand me criticizing her darling. Her eyes blazed as she hurled the umbrella to the ground. "What do you mean by that? You think he faked it? Not everyone is as petty as you, okay?"The rain stung my skin, cold and relentless, mirroring the gash in my heart. I stared at the discarded umbrella, feeling like a clown. The ten years we shared bound only me.She would never let Julian get wet, and now she didn't care that I'd just gotten over a fever. Maybe she never cared about me at all."I'm going abroad next week," I said, turning to go back. "Take care."She grabbed my wrist, her face twisted, not with regret, but irritation. "Now you're using leaving to manipulate me? I told you I just need to sort things with Julian. You've waited ten years. What's a little longer?"That was a sheer lie. If
