It was dark. We were seated around a table at the bar, a stone’s throw from our campus, our faces barely visible. It was a good day, and we were as high as the clouds.
“Heather,” my friend, James said, snapping his fingers to a game we’d been playing for a while now. “She’s the hottest girl in school. Everyone knows that. Right, Marcus?”
"Right," I said, used to agreeing with whatever James said. I wrapped my hands around my glass and took a long swig. The alcohol burned my throat, travelling down until I felt its heat pool at the pit of my stomach.
It pressed hard on my bladder, threatening to burst through right then.
“I’ll be back,” I muttered, getting on my feet. “Toilet.”
The group barely realized I'd left. I got it. Heather was hot. Every man in St. John's desperately wanted to be in her good books. But to me, Heather was just… I don’t know… a regular woman.
The queue to the bathroom was long. I didn’t think my bladder could wait for the crowd gathered out front. Taking a detour, I took the back door out of the bar. That was when I heard it.
I would recognize that voice anywhere.
"You sucked his dick, too?” He was saying, with the tone of someone who didn't care much. Come on! Tell me, Heather."
"You've got to be kidding me!" Heather responded breathily. Talk about the devil. "It was a mistake, Jordan. And I'm sorry for that. But can you really blame me? You have a reputation in St. James.”
St. James was our sister school. While St. John took the courses in arts and humanities, St. James took the sciences and engineering courses. Heather and Jordan were the king and queen of both campuses.
I should have gone back inside to my friends. This was none of my business. Yet, I moved into the dark, following the sound of their voice, and hoping the stones crunching underneath my feet weren’t too loud.
"You knew that before you decided to date me,” Jordan countered, stupidly by the way. Who the hell said that to his girlfriend? Well, what would I know? I’d never dated anyone.
"And you never see me fucking a professor,” he continued. “That was really low, Heather. Even for you."
“He came on to me. What was I supposed to do?”
“Close your fucking legs?” It sounded like a tired suggestion. “Heather, I came here to party with my friends, but you’re making that hard to do. Can you just… get out of my way or something?”
“Will you pick up my calls or text me back?”
“I’ll do whatever the hell I want to do.”
I didn’t know he’d moved. I heard him too late. It all happened in the blink of an eye. One minute, he still sounded quite a distance from me, and the next, he was right in front of me.
I swallowed as Jordan Arthur easily towered over me, his 6 ft - self blocking the night's air. For a minute, it felt like the earth had run out of oxygen. He made me nervous.
So nervous.
“Get your earful?” He was mad.
But despite that, the only thing I could focus on was his voice. Did people sound that way?
“I…I was just…”
"Of course," he barked out a laugh. "You want a piece out of her, too? She's there. Have at it. After all, she's great in bed."
Heather heard that, and she walked out from the shadows. She didn’t look like someone who was just apologizing. “What the hell is wrong with you, Jordan? I told you I was sorry. And I definitely do not go for losers and nerds.”
“That Professor was a loser too,” Jordan responded without taking his gaze off me. “Don’t you think that kind of negates your words?”
“Jordan….”
“I don’t even know why I bother with you.”
“Jordan!”
“Have at her!” His shoulders hit mine as he walked past, and I staggered, pushed a few feet backwards. My glasses skidded to the ground just as my knee gave way, and I took in my first shaky breath since Jordan saw me.
He had no idea who I was, but I knew him. Everyone knew him. The smartest kid in St. James’ medical school. The hottest playboy and the rich basketball player.
I was still on the floor, trying to search for my glasses, when the skidding of tyres suddenly echoed in the parking lot. The driver had lost control and was heading towards me. I tried to move fast. I needed to reach for my glasses.
“What the fuck!” Jordan yelled from somewhere behind me, “Get out of there! Leave!”
It was the last thing I heard before the car got too close, hitting my side, before my lost glasses broke under the tyres.
Before the world turned black.

The next time I opened my eyes, I was staring straight at James, who was looking down at me like he was studying the evolution of man.
“Man, Marcus!” he sighed, holding on to the bars around the bed. “God, you scared me. When I saw you on the ground… God!”
“What happened?” I whispered, trying to sit up. A sharp pain jolted up my body so suddenly that I dropped back into the bed.
“Be careful,” James murmured. “The doctor said you should try not to move around till you’re at least healed. But what the fuck were you doing out in the parking lot? You were supposed to be with us. We were searching for you after the game and…”
I remembered then. The accident. My glasses.
I reached for it out of habit, patting the nightstand next to the bed. James shook his head. "It was destroyed in the accident. I'm just grateful that nothing happened to you."
“What about him?” I really needed water.
“Who?” James narrowed his gaze.
“There was someone…”
“Heather? Of course, she’s in another hospital. Jordan has been going out of his mind trying to ensure she’s fine. She took the brunt of the accident.”
That made no sense.
"I saw her,” James continued, like he could see the confusion in my eyes. “She was lying on the floor, and the paramedics were all around her."
“The car didn’t even go in her direction.”
“Are you certain?”
I was, but it didn’t matter. I sat up slowly. “How long have I been out for?”
“A couple of hours. It’s almost evening.”
“Did … did anyone come for me?”
James scrunched his face in a little frown. “No. Just me and the rest of the group. You do not have other friends, remember?”
"Right," I muttered, lying back on the bed. Why the hell did I think Jordan of all people would come see me at the hospital?
I didn’t answer Enzo’s question. I knew it was a stupid thing to do, especially since he was going to be spending the night in my house. He was in the bathroom now. I could hear the water running from where I stood, leaning against the door to my bedroom. My mom appeared at the entrance to the hallway. I stood straight. “Well?”She drew closer and angled her head, as if listening to the water, before responding. “He seems like a good kid from a good family.”I shook my head. That was the generic response she gave each time she didn’t think it was in her place to form an opinion about someone. But this was important. For some reason, I felt like I needed someone to tell me I was in over my head and needed to stop waiting for something that would never come. “What do you want to hear, honey?” She stood in front of me, watching. "I don't know," I whispered. "He's a good friend, and he just… he just asked me why I don't want to be in a relationship. I panicked and asked him to go have h
"Mom, we're here!" I called as soon as we climbed out of the car and onto the porch. The living room was warm, a mixture of the scent from the kitchen and the warmth of the evening. It was empty, save for the sound coming from the television. It was an old opera we used to see together as a family. Watching the characters brought a small smile to my lips. It had felt like ages since everything was absolutely fine. "Welcome to my home," I murmured to Enzo, watching him. Sometimes, I wished I could experience this place anew. I wanted to see what Enzo saw, and feel what he felt from his own lenses. He was quiet, his eyes moving from one surface to the other. "I see why you are a nerd," he said an eternity later, and unlike all the other people who called me that back at school, I knew that Enzo didn't mean it in a bad way. "Everything is so…put in the right places, for lack of a better word. It's …"“Proper?” I helped. Enzo nodded. “That’s the word.”“Don’t let my mom hear you,” I mo
"Now that was smooth." Nita met me outside the conference room, falling into step with me as I headed for my office.“What?”"The way she handed you her card, and then that wink. I have read about it in a book. Coquette 101."“I’m sure that isn’t a thing, Nita,” I retorted, pushing the door open and stepping aside to let her in, like she even needed to be in my office right at this hour. I thought I needed to give up on getting rid of her anytime soon.Nita sauntered inside, throwing herself on my seat, behind my desk. She picked up the minuscule basketball I had on my table, throwing it up and catching it repeatedly, while I moved to my little stash by the left corner of the room, grabbing a bottle of my favorite brand of scotch and two glasses.“Oh no, Mr. Arthur.” I could hear the tease in her tone. “We don’t drink on the job now, do we? What if Mr. Arthur calls me for some intel on you and smells that shit on me? How do I explain it to him?"“Just tell him you’re sleeping with me,
“No,” I muttered, shaking my head. “I don’t know where the rumours are from, but they are not true.”“Can you elaborate on that, sir?” The reporter asked, her eyes keen and her hands toying with the paper in front of her. Her gaze hadn’t left me since I realized she had a question directed my way, and it was beyond the regular waiting for an answer.Because she batted them often, and sometimes her bottom lip got caught between her teeth – obvious tells about what this is."I am finishing med school because it is something I actually love, and playing basketball with my mates back at the University of the Saints. This project is just something I am doing as a majority shareholder of the Arthur Group, and I think it is going to be great. But it doesn't affect my pursuit of a medical degree."I was expecting a follow-up question, but the reporter just stayed nodding incessantly and smiling up at me. I attempted a chuckle, pushing my hair out of the way. The silence was getting oddly long
“Are you…”"I think I know where it is too." Enzo was already getting on his feet. "I was there when he opened it. He looked so excited to be doing something for himself, and I really did think it was great. I still think that."“It’s just that… are you sure you want to play golf right now?”“Of course,” Enzo laughed. “I love that sport. And I can compete with you at something I actually enjoy doing.”I got on my feet too. “I don’t know how to play golf.”“I can teach you.”He waved someone over. When did he make a friend? They moved to a corner to speak while I just stood there, watching their lips move and wondering what that was about. In another minute, Enzo returned.“Did you know him before?”He shook his head. “I was just speaking to him about the possibility of purchasing some shares here. And of course, for him to take care of the picnic items without us needing to return them ourselves.”“Enzo, it would only have taken a minute. And besides, you don’t have to invest in someth
"Are you sure there's nothing I can do about it?" Enzo asked for the thousandth time since he surprised me in the lobby of Arthur Group. He'd told me he wouldn't be flying in until much later. Imagine my surprise when I saw him through my eyes full of tears. I shook my head, just grateful that he was here with me. “I can handle it.”"Are you sure, though?" He pushed, leading me out to his sports car, parked imposingly in front of the building, even though there was a literal underground parking lot. I was certain he had bullied every single person that had tried to get him to drive into the parking lot.The mere image was enough to make me smile a little. “Marv has always been a bully,” Enzo continued, stopping by the passenger door of his car. “I know he is my father’s friend and all, but that doesn’t take away the fact that I stay away from him for good cause. He can be a little too much.”“Trust me, I know.”“So, let me do something.” Enzo didn’t look like he wanted to let this go
