Rebecca’s POV

The city refused to decay.

Morning light was up across the streets as we ventured deeper, and the ruins looked less like ruins and more like something preserved deliberately. Buildings that should have collapsed centuries ago still stood tall, their walls should have cracked down but nothing had happened to them. Wooden doors didn't rot, insects didn't even spoil them. Metal frames too stayed firm, untouched by rust.

The air felt fresh and familiar. I was still thinking about how I could have possibly been here before when Matthew's voice brought me out of the thinking.

“Cities don’t survive like this.”

Nobody disagreed.

We got to a place that looked like a public square. The ground was uneven, stones shook and shifted, but in the center, the remains of a monument was standing. Only the part below survived, its upper half shattered long ago.

I moved closer, noticing carvings made into the stone that were now a little faint. My eyes tried to trace the lines, but instead of reading them, I placed my hand against the cold surface.

Nothing magical.

But for a split second, the square changed.

Blurred figures walked past me — children running, merchants calling out, wolves and witches conversing freely. The air was alive with voices, laughter, footsteps.

Then it was gone. I stumbled backward, my breath catching.

“Rebecca?” Ezekiel’s voice was sharp.

Matthew frowned. “What happened?”

I shook my head quickly. “Nothing…”

But even as I said it, I wasn’t sure I believed myself. Ezekiel began noticing something else. Symbols. Not words, but a crest of different forms.

It appeared to be everywhere — carved into walls, etched into broken pillars, painted a little on old shields, even beside fountains where water still flowed.

He brushed his fingers across one. “This symbol repeats.”

Matthew scowled. “What does it mean?”

Ezekiel shook his head. “I don’t know.”

But I felt it. The mark on my shoulder warmed up a bit every time my eyes landed on the crest.

Matthew suddenly stopped. His golden eyes closed halfway, his wolf started becoming restless under his skin.

“Someone’s here.”

The words made us stand still. Weapons came out. Silence pressed in, but nothing appeared, from that moment onward, every step felt watched.

Tyler was the first to break away later, he was drawn toward a house at the edge of the square. He pushed the door open, and we followed him inside.

The air smelled faintly of herbs. Dried bundles of the herbs stood from the ceiling. Wooden furniture stood intact, a woven blanket folded neatly across a chair.

It didn’t look abandoned.

It looked lived in.

Tyler looked up and saw a framed portrait above the fireplace. The painting had faded almost entirely, colors washed away by time.

Except for the eyes.

The eyes remained, sharp and unyielding, staring back at us.

Tyler shivered, stepping away. “Let’s go.”

None of us argued.

I found myself kneeling beside one of the white flowers growing through the cracks of the street. Its petals glowed faintly, almost luminous.

Without thinking, I brushed dirt away from its roots.

“Why are you still alive?” I whispered.

No answer. Just the wind blowing softly.

But the mark on my shoulder warmed again, stronger this time.

“Rebecca.”

Matthew’s voice rose from across the street. We gathered quickly, drawn to the massive stone building that was ahead.

Unlike everything else, its enormous doors were intact. Perfectly intact. No cracks. No weathering. No sign of age.

Across the doors, carved deep into the stone, was the same symbol Ezekiel had been seeing all day.

We stood in silence, staring.

I felt the mark burn beneath my skin. Not painfully but expectantly.

As if it had been waiting for this moment. I stepped forward slowly, my breath shallow.

The doors made a little noise.

And then, without anyone touching them…

They opened.

The city was inviting me in.

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 164 — The Other Marked Girl

Garrick's POVSelene hadn't been wrong about the pull at all. I felt it myself now, the closer we got. It was not a sound, not quite a scent, just something wrong in the air that thickened with every mile, the same wrongness that had been trailing us since the mountain village's graves first opened. We weren't the only place it was happening. That was the part that had started to unsettle me more than any single grave could. Every village we'd passed through in the last week carried some version of the same story—ground disturbed, livestock spooked, an old woman somewhere swearing she'd heard her dead husband's voice calling from beneath the floorboards. Isolated incidents, if you only heard one. Impossible to dismiss once you'd heard a dozen. This village had it worse than most. The ground around the well had split open in a wide, ragged ring, pale root-like things breaking the surface and pulling themselves free of the dirt entirely—not corpses, not quite, something assemb

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 163 — Coordinated Attack

Matthew's POV They broke off faster than I expected, once it became clear Kael wasn't coming easily. Not a rout. Nothing that sloppy. Whoever led this raid pulled his men back in the same disciplined, wordless coordination they'd used to advance—a controlled withdrawal, not a defeat, the kind of retreat that told me this had never been an all-in assault to begin with. A probe. A test of how hard we'd fight to keep one man. We'd fought hard enough. That should have felt like more of a victory than it did. I found Ezekiel in the courtyard once the last of them had vanished back into the treeline, both of us breathing hard, blood on both of us that wasn't entirely our own. "Numbers," I said. "Three dead on our side. Six more wounded, two of those seriously." His jaw was tight, already cataloguing, already doing the thing he did to keep from feeling it directly. "The eastern wall's compromised. We'll need it rebuilt before winter, not just patched." Three dead. I made mysel

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 162 — The King Marches

Jeremy's POVThe report from the mansion reached me before dawn, delivered by a messenger too winded to soften any of it.The assault had failed to secure its target. Kael had escaped capture. And Fred—one of my more reliable Watchers for longer than I cared to count—had turned his blade on one of his own in full view of soldiers and Watchers both.I didn't feel the surprise the messenger clearly expected me to feel. I'd watched loyalty erode all around me for months now. Selene first. Now Fred. A garden untended long enough eventually stopped being a garden at all."Anything else," I asked."No, my lord.""Then leave me."I visited Elias before I did anything else, some old, worn habit of using his suffering to steady my own resolve. Tonight I let the corruption go further than I usually allowed myself—not out of strategy, but out of something rawer, something closer to fury than I liked to examine too closely. I watched it take his voice from him entirely, the words he'd always

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 161 — What Silence Means the Second Time

Matthew's POVThe quiet reached me before anything else did.I noticed it the way I noticed most things now—not with my ears first, but with whatever had been sharpening in me since the bond with Rebecca finished settling. A wrongness under my skin before my mind caught up to naming it. The eastern watchtower, which should have called its hour a few minutes back, hadn't.I was moving before I finished deciding to.The second tower was already dark by the time I reached the wall—not extinguished violently, just gone quiet, the two men who should have been posted there nowhere in sight. No blood. No struggle marks. Just absence, precise and deliberate, the same wrongness we'd walked into on the ridge weeks ago, except this time I understood exactly what silence like this usually meant before something worse followed it."Sound the alarm," I told the nearest guard, low. "Quietly, if you can manage it. I don't want them knowing we've noticed yet."He didn't manage it quietly enough.

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 160 - Closing The Gap

Rohan's POVI found her in the healer's room after most of the mansion had gone quiet for the night, restocking shelves that didn't need restocking, the way she did when her hands needed something to do and her mind wasn't cooperating."You're still up," I said."So are you." She didn't turn around right away. "Camille's settled, if that's what you're here about. Sleeping, finally. I gave her something mild.""That's not what I'm here about."That got her attention. She set down the jar in her hands, careful, deliberate, and turned to face me properly, something in her expression bracing for whatever came next."We've been doing this a long time," I said, "without ever actually saying what it is.""Rohan—""I'm not asking you to define it tonight if you're not ready. I just—" I ran a hand through my hair, feeling less composed than I usually let myself feel in front of anyone. "I watched you today. With Camille. The way you sat with her without needing to fix anything, just let h

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate    Chapter 159 — Different Burdens

Rebecca's POVThe gate guard found me in the training yard, breathless in the particular way that meant the news wouldn't keep. "There's a woman at the gate," he said. "Says she knows you. Says her name's Camille."My whole chest went tight around the name before I'd even processed hearing it.I arrived at the gate quicker than I intended to, quicker than dignity would have let me, and there she was, thinner than I had thought, with her short dark hair grown out into an untrimmed mass of tangles. She turned her head at the sound of my feet, and froze."Cam.""You're alive." Her voice cracked on it. "They said you might be here. I didn't let myself believe it until I saw you."I bridged the gap and drew her to me, and for a minute it was pure relief—the comfort of having a body that I had known all my life, tangible and real, finally in my reach. She held onto me so tightly that it hurt, but I didn’t pull away, knowing that whatever it meant for her, I instinctively knew

Alpha Kings POV“There are rumours about it,” One of the Advisers said. Rebecca’s POVIt was morning already. I could hear the chirping of the birds as they sang their melody. I just wanted to sleep today, and I can still remember the look on Tyler’s face.It is still as clear as day. I was relieved I finally got the words out, but that feeling was short-lived as a gen
