Chapter 192 - What the Concealment Hid

              Jeremy's POV

The hut was empty. Not just empty — cut open, the wall breached from the inside, rope severed and left in pieces on the floor like an insult aimed specifically at me.

"Explain this," I said to the witch, and I didn't bother softening the edge in it.

She knelt by the cut rope, fingers hovering over it without touching. "The binding held. I felt it hold, right up until it didn't."

"That's not an explanation. That's a confession you don't understand your own work."

She looked up at me, and for the first time since I'd taken her on, I saw something in her face that wasn't composed certainty. Fear, maybe. Or the beginning of it.

"Something helped her," she said. "The marked girl. Her power reached farther than it should have been able to reach, bound the way she was. That's not a failure of my binding, my king. That's something using her binding against itself."

I didn't have patience left for riddles. I turned from her and went to find the scout who'd been watching the mansion's roads, and what he told me settled something cold and clear into place before he'd even finished the sentence.

Both of them. Gone. The mansion's little girl and the marked one we'd held — vanished within the same span of hours, no trail, no trace, like something had simply reached down and lifted them both out of the world at once.

I understood immediately what my witch didn't.

I'd met the Erased leader once, not quite long, on our way here, in the early chaos before I fully understood what was building. I remembered exactly what they'd looked like even then — thin, fading things, power running out of them like water through cupped hands unlike before.

Whatever those two girls were, whoever had made them, I doubted very much there was strength left in the Erased to hold onto anything for long. They were dying. They'd been dying for longer than anyone else seemed to realize.

Which meant chasing them was a waste of an army I didn't have infinite reason to spend.

"Leave the marked girls," I told the witch, and watched the surprise register on her face. "Whoever's pulling on that thread, let them have it. They'll unravel on their own soon enough, and I won't spend a single soldier proving what's already true."

"Then what do we do with the army?"

I felt something settle in me that was close to relief — the relief of finally deciding a thing I'd been circling for longer than I wanted to admit.

"Everything you were hiding under that village," I said. "Every soldier that concealment was keeping quiet. Bring it out. All of it."

"A full advance." She said.

"A full war." I replied her plainly, because there was nothing left to gain from subtlety now that Garrick knew exactly what I was capable of and had run from it anyway. "Rebecca. The mansion. Every ally standing behind her. I want it all moving by morning."

She bowed her head, already turning to give the order, already understanding this was not a request.

I got on my horse. There was one last thread I needed to bring.

I went to find Elias myself. Not to talk through the bars the way I usually did, circling him for whatever slipped loose in his weaker moments. I wanted him closer than that now. Close enough to use properly, if it came to it — close enough that whatever remained sharp in that mind of his would be within reach the moment I needed it.

"We're moving," I told him, through the cell door, nodding to the commander I had left behind before I'd even opened the cell door.

"You're coming with me." I said.

He didn't answer at first. When he did, his voice carried more clarity than I expected, and less fear than I wanted.

"Whatever you think you're marching toward," he said quietly, "you should know by now it isn't the ending you think it is."

I opened the door anyway.

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 233 — What Remains

Rebecca’s POVMira had her grandfather's hands.I noticed it one morning while she was reaching for something she couldn't have yet — a cup on the table, well outside her range, completely unbothered by the impossibility of the attempt. The shape of her fingers, the particular angle of her wrist. I'd seen that exact gesture on Elias across a hundred tables and hadn't registered it as his until I saw it on her, and then I couldn't unsee it.I sat with that for a while after she gave up on the cup and moved on to something else. The grief came the way it came now — not in waves, not dramatically, just as a fact that arrived and took up space until it had said what it needed to say. He was gone. Mira would know him only through what I told her, which meant I was the only bridge between them, which meant I had to be deliberate about it.I picked her up and sat by the window where the morning light came through at the angle I'd been learning to love, and I talked to her about him.

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 232 — Like You, Like Her

Kael's POVGarrick found me in the corridor before the ceremony, which I suspected wasn't accidental. He moved differently with the crutch now — not slower, just differently, with the particular economy of someone who had stopped fighting a thing and started working with it instead. He stopped beside me and looked at the main room where people were still arranging themselves, and said nothing for a moment."You're thinking about the name," he said."I haven't heard the name yet.""You're thinking about what it might be."I looked at him. He looked at the room."Stop reading people," I said."Stop being readable." He shifted his weight, glanced at the crutch briefly, then back at the room. "For what it's worth — whatever she calls her, it'll be right. Rebecca doesn't do things by accident.""I know that.""You're just going to stand there looking like a man preparing for something anyway.""Yes."He almost smiled. "Good. At least you're honest about it." He nodded at my feet.

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate    Chapter 231 — What Gets Written Down

Ezekiel’s POVI called them in after breakfast, which was the right time for difficult things — when people were fed and present and hadn't yet filled the day with other concerns. The document was twelve pages. I'd written it over three weeks, pulling everything together: Emily's explanations, the elder Erased's words, the cell markings, what I'd watched happen in the clearing with Kael. Everything that had answers now.I read it to them plainly, without performance. The Erased had been old — older than any of us had understood when we were fighting them. An ancient faction who believed the Bridge should be destroyed rather than fulfill

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 230 — New  Normal

Rebecca’s POVWe made it approximately forty minutes down the road before the child decided she was hungry, which was her right and also her timing, and the group stopped with the particular efficiency of people who had survived a war and could certainly manage a roadside feeding.Matthew stood with his back to me, facing the road ahead, arms crossed, expression unreadable. He was guarding. This was how he processed things that required adjustment — by finding a useful function and performing it impeccably while his interior caught up.Tyler sat on a rock nearby and watched the treeline with the easy comfort of someone who found none of this unusual, which I appreciated more than I could say.Ezekiel crouched beside me and looked at the child with the expression he wore when he was observing something he intended to understand fully."She's feeding well," he said."Yes.""The latch looks correct.""Ezekiel.""I'm being helpful.""You're being you," I said. "Which is usually th

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 229 — Finished Business

Rebecca's POV The old woman led us to the center of the village before the morning had fully decided what it wanted to be in the early hour where the light was still making up its mind, and everything looked like the version of itself that hasn't been asked to perform yet.The village had gathered. Not really in a formal way, just present, the way communities are present for things that belong to all of them, standing at the edges of the open space with the quiet of people who understood what they were witnessing. The rites were old. I didn't know the words, but my body did. Some recognition in the blood, the same one that had stirred when my feet touched the path yesterday and everything had shifted. The old woman spoke and the three men I married stood beside me, the child was in my arms and the village bore witness, and whatever the mansion ceremony had begun, this completed it in the way that only ground can complete things. When it was done, the old woman reached into th

  • The Three Alphas’ Rejected Mate   Chapter 228 — Each Other

Ezekiel's POV I rode harder than I needed to. Matthew was beside me and didn't say anything about the pace, which meant he was riding just as hard and had simply decided not to acknowledge it.The village came into view as the morning light was fully committed to the day, and the old woman at the gate watched us arrive with the expression of someone who had been expecting us at roughly this time and found our punctuality adequate.Rebecca was in the house. Emily was beside her. The child was in Rebecca's arms.I crossed the room and sat beside her and didn't say anything for a moment, because the moment didn't need words yet — it needed presence, which I had learned, over the course of everything, was sometimes the more useful thing to offer."Do you want to hold her?" Rebecca said.I held out my hands. The child was small in the way that new things are small — completely, without apology, taking up exactly as much space as they needed and no more. I held her carefully, the

Rebecca’s POVI couldn't stop staring at him. He was undoubtedly more handsome than the last time I saw him. His brown hair was wet, which gave off the fact that he had just taken a bath. His strong masculine scent was quite literally breathtaking. “Rebecca?” My thoughts halted, and I came right b

Rebecca’s POV“Rebecca, wake up, you can sleep through a storm.” My mother opened up the curtains and exposed my room to sunlight. She wouldn't understand that I spent the whole night thinking about the mating proposal I got from Tyler.Tyler wanted to mate with me? Why? He bullied me when we were

Alpha Kings POV“There are rumours about it,” One of the Advisers said. The Alpha Kings sat on their thrones listening to the report. “We need accurate information, not speculation,” Matthew said sternly.“The possibility of war happening is greater than it not happening,” another adviser said, a

Rebecca’s POVIt was morning already. I could hear the chirping of the birds as they sang their melody. I just wanted to sleep today, and I can still remember the look on Tyler’s face.It is still as clear as day. I was relieved I finally got the words out, but that feeling was short-lived as a gen
