Zarek POV

There’s something about conversations with Alex that stick like bad aftertaste. Her words had been looping in my head all day, sharp and sour:

I wanted to laugh it off. Wanted to chalk it up to bitterness, jealousy, heartbreak—whatever brand of poison Alex had decided to marinate in. But the thing was, it wasn’t just Alex saying it. Everyone had their version of Zara the villain.

And I couldn’t tell if I was the only idiot who saw through it… or if I was the only one being fooled.

I turned the corner, and there she was—pressed against the lockers, Atlas towering over her like a shadow. His hand was braced against the metal, blocking her escape. His voice was low, demanding. “Stop running from me, Zara. We need to talk.”

Her chin lifted, stubborn but trembling. “I said I don’t want to, Atlas.” She tried to move, but he shifted, caging her in again.

Something snapped in me.

Before I even thought, I was there. “She said no.”

Atlas’s head whipped around, eyes narrowing.

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 109 ~ A bitter taste

Zarek POV If anyone asked me what my hobby was, I’d say “sampling.” Not wine, not food—though I do appreciate a good plate of medium-rare steak—but people. I like tasting their flavors, poking around their edges, seeing what drips out when you press them just right. And lately, my “sampling” had one specific theme: Zara’s ghosts. Ex-mates. Ex-best friends. All the people she used to orbit around before she became… well, the Zara I know now. The Zara who hides behind that sharp tongue and fire, but who I’ve caught crying when she thought no one was watching. The Zara everyone loves to hate, but somehow, I can’t stop circling back to. So, today’s special on the tasting menu? Alexandra. Alex. The former best friend, turned loudest hater. I spotted her at the stone steps in front of the east wing, backpack dumped beside her like she’d thrown it there in disgust. Her legs were crossed, one foot bouncing rapidly, and she had this deep scowl etched into her face, like someone had stole

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 108 ~ Crack in the mask

Zarek I’ve always been good at reading people. It’s part of the act. Play the clown, play the cat, let everyone underestimate you while you watch them give themselves away. And after my little game with Talia, I knew one thing for sure: cracks were spreading, and Zara was right in the middle of them. I told myself I’d swing by her room, toss a joke, maybe test the waters with what I’d pieced together. Not because I cared—please, I’d rather eat my own tail than admit that—but because someone had to keep her from being blindsided. And who better than me, the resident fool no one suspects of noticing anything? I padded down the hallway, hands shoved into my pockets, humming lazily. The dorms were quiet this late, shadows stretching long across the walls, the faint scent of old wood and lavender soap lingering in the air. Zara’s door was closed, but light spilled from the crack beneath. I was about to knock when I heard it. Not the sound of her pacing, not her muttering curses like u

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 107 ~ The cat’s play

Zarek I never liked waiting around for answers. If something didn’t add up, I’d poke, prod, and claw at it until I got the truth—or at least the flavor of it. And lately? Something about Talia had been itching at me like a burr caught in my fur. Kai’s name lingered around her like smoke, and every time it came up, she got twitchy. Too twitchy. I might not be the most serious guy around—hell, everyone thinks I’m a joke half the time—but I’m not blind. So I decided to pay her a little visit. Not because I cared. Please. Don’t flatter her. It was pure curiosity. The same kind that makes a cat paw at a closed box until it tips over. I found her exactly where I expected: the courtyard garden, with its little benches and vines curling up stone walls. She was sitting alone, pretending to read a book, though her eyes kept flicking to her phone like it was whispering secrets only she could hear. I leaned against the ivy wall, watching her for a beat. Then, I grinned, pushed off, and sau

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 106 ~ Fractures in the truth

Zara The silence stretched between us like a noose. My words—By saying the truth—still lingered in the air, heavy enough to choke us both. Atlas didn’t look away, but I saw it. The shaking in his eyes. The war. His jaw worked, teeth pressing together like he was holding back a thousand answers, and when he finally spoke, his voice was low, clipped, almost dangerous. “You don’t know what you’re asking, Zara.” I folded my arms, forcing steel into my spine even though my heart felt like it was battering against my ribs. “I think I do. Stop pretending. Stop dancing around it. Since when did you know I was Mira?” Atlas’s eyes darkened. “You’re not Mira.” “Don’t lie to me.” “I’m not lying!” His voice cracked out sharp enough to make the birds in the trees scatter. He dragged a hand through his hair, pacing a few steps like the ground itself couldn’t hold his restlessness. “You’re not Mira anymore. That girl—” he broke off, shaking his head. “That girl’s gone.” Anger flared hot in my

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 105 ~ The weight of the truth

Zara Morning came like an insult. The sun’s pale rays filtered through the academy windows as though nothing in the world had shifted, as though last night I hadn’t been tricked, locked away, and forced to dig through fragments of a past I could barely hold on to. My hands still ached from pounding that damned door. My throat was still rough from screaming at Seraphine. And my chest—well, my chest was worse. Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Atlas’s face in those fragments, and heard the way he begged me to explain why I was breaking him apart. I hadn’t slept. Not properly. My wolf inside me paced endlessly, snapping at nothing. And I carried every shred of that anger straight into class. The hallway leading into the classroom buzzed with the usual chatter, but it dimmed as soon as I pushed through the doors. Heads turned. Whispers rose. Maybe it was the storm in my eyes, maybe it was the way my steps didn’t falter, didn’t hesitate. Because I knew exactly where I was goi
