SIENNA

They welded the grate shut on a Tuesday.

I watched it from the window of the storeroom. Two wolves with a blowtorch knelt at the foot of the south wall in a shower of white sparks, and a third held a sheet of iron against the old culvert mouth until the seam glowed red. It took twenty minutes. When they finished, the wall looked as though nothing had ever been cut into it.

My lifeline was gone.

I stood with my hand flat against the cold glass and did the numbers in my head. Seven wolves

  • The Traitor's Mate In The Apocalypse    Chapter 80 - “The Trap Springs”

SIENNAI did not run to the cellar. That was the first thing, and the hardest. Every instinct in my body screamed at me to sprint for the kitchen stair, to get to Ronan before the guards flooded the yard. But Ravenna had taught me something, over twenty years and a hundred ambushes. When you walk into a trap, the worst thing you can do is walk in the way they expect.I turned and went the other way.I took the storeroom’s back door, the one that opened into the narrow alley behind the armory, and I went along the wall in the dark with my coat pulled up over my chin. The bell went on shrieking. Wolves ran past the mouth of the alley in a stream, shouting for water and buckets, not one of them looking my way.I came out at the back of the kitchen yard. The smoke was thick here, hanging in gray veils under the torches. I kept to the shadow of the woodpile and counted. Ten wolves at the kitchen door with buckets. Four at the cistern. And on the far side, near the east tower stair, a small

  • The Traitor's Mate In The Apocalypse    Chapter 79 - “Voss’s Trap”

SIENNAThe quiet should have warned me.I have thought about that many times since. I have gone back over every day of that week, turning each hour in my hands like a stone, looking for the place where I should have known. It was all there. It had been laid out in plain sight, a pattern as clear as a map. I was simply looking in the wrong direction.Voss had been absent from the council for three days.I noticed it, but I did not weigh it. He had missed sessions before. An old man had old man’s ailments, and nobody questioned a chair left empty. Corwin took his place at the table and spoke for him in his dry, tired voice, and Maeve sat beside him with her mouth drawn like a seam.I noted it. I filed it. I moved on.The second thing was Lysa. She came to me on the Wednesday with her hands knotted in her apron and her gray eyes enormous. We stood in the dim dispensary behind a wall of shelved jars, and she spoke so low I had to lean close to hear.“Selene’s changed,” she whispered.“Cha

  • The Traitor's Mate In The Apocalypse    Chapter 78 - “Almost”

SIENNAThe first snow fell three nights later. It came without warning, out of a sky that had been clear at dusk. By midnight the courtyard was white, and the torches along the wall wore soft halos, and the whole stronghold had gone hushed and strange, as though the world had been wrapped in cotton.I was in the storeroom, counting sacks of flour.I had not meant to be. I had meant to be asleep. But the vigil was over, and the corridor was empty, and I had lain awake until the silence became unbearable, and so I had put on my coat and come down to the one place where numbers still behaved. The door was open a hand’s breadth. Through it I could see the snow coming down in slow, thick flakes, silent and endless. The latch clicked.I did not turn around.“You should be asleep,” Kieran said.“So should you.”“I saw the light.”He came in and shut the door behind him. The storeroom was small and cold and smelled of flour and oil and old wood. A single lamp burned on the crate beside me, th

  • The Traitor's Mate In The Apocalypse    Chapter 77 - “Shared Wall”

SIENNAThe night patrols belonged to Voss, but the wall belonged to Kieran. That was how he put it, the evening after the sixth vigil, when he stopped me in the corridor with a lantern in one hand and a thick gray scarf in the other.“I walk the north wall at midnight,” he said. “If you can’t sleep.”It was not an invitation. It was not an order. It was something in between, offered with such careful neutrality that I could have refused without either of us acknowledging that anything had been asked.I took the scarf. The north wall at midnight was nothing like the south. The air was clean and bitterly cold, and the whole sky was hung with stars, thick and silver and utterly indifferent to the war below. The sentries had been drawn off to the south for Voss’s drill. We were alone along a hundred yards of cracked concrete, with the dead drifting far down in the ruined streets and the wind coming in off the hills in long, low sighs. We walked without speaking. It was the first time in a

  • The Traitor's Mate In The Apocalypse    Chapter 76 - “Sleepless”

SIENNAHe did not pace that night. That was how I knew something had changed. For months, the rhythm of his boots had been the heartbeat of the Alpha wing, window to door, door to window, twenty-two steps each way. I had learned to sleep through it. I had learned, God help me, to miss it when it stopped. Now there was only silence. At midnight I lay awake and listened to nothing. At one, nothing. At two, a faint creak of a chair in the corridor outside my door, and then the soft, patient sound of a man settling his weight against the wall.I turned my head.Beneath my door, in the thin gap above the floor, a shadow lay across the line of light from the torch in the hall. Long. Broad. Perfectly still. He was sitting outside my room.I did not call out.I did not rise. I did not speak. I lay on my back in the dark with my hands folded on my chest and watched the shadow, and the shadow did not move.It was there all night.I knew, because I did not sleep either. At dawn, the shadow was g

  • The Traitor's Mate In The Apocalypse    Chapter 75 - “The Warning”

SIENNAI heard it through the wall.I had not meant to. It was past two in the morning, and I was lying awake in the dark, as I had every night for weeks, listening to the old stones tick and settle. Then came footsteps in the corridor. The click of a latch. A low voice at the connecting door, and an answer.Damien.He made his rounds at two. Every night. He had told me so himself. He checked on the Alpha, the way a soldier checks on a friend, to see that he had not done something foolish in the dark.I rose from the bed.I told myself I was going to the window. I crossed the floor in my bare feet, soundless on the cold boards, and stopped beside the heavy oak of the connecting door. The wood was old. The gap beneath it was thin. Through it, and through the keyhole, I could hear them as clearly as if they stood in my room.“You’re awake,” Damien said.“I’m always awake.”“I know.” A pause. The creak of a chair. “Alpha, I need to say something. I need you to hear it as your Beta.”Kier
