Chapter 2

Author: Trees in Art
My voice was quiet, but it made everyone freeze.

Shane still seemed confused by what I’d said. He frowned on instinct.

“What are you plotting now? Summer, I’m warning you. You could drop dead right here, and we still wouldn’t give in to you again!”

“I’m not plotting anything.”

I straightened and looked at him calmly. “I asked where the pen was. Wasn’t I supposed to sign?”

My behavior made Mason frown too.

He scoffed, pulled a pen from his pocket, and tossed it at my feet. “Stop putting on an act.

“If you sign without making a fuss, I’ll have someone put $200,000 in your account. At least then you won’t starve on the street and embarrass us.”

I bent down and picked up the pen.

Without a moment’s hesitation, I flipped to the last page and signed my name without reading a single clause.

Then I handed the agreement to Mason.

He didn’t take it.

He stared at me, a flicker of surprise in his eyes.

“You don’t want it? Fine. I’ll leave it here.”

I placed the agreement on the table, then turned to Wesley.

“Dr. Leigh.” I used his title instead of calling him by his first name.

Wesley paused and looked up at me.

“I’m not sick, but thank you for your medical advice,” I said calmly.

“Tell them to go easy on the salt in the food at the Leigh house. You prefer lighter meals, and too much salt upsets your stomach.”

Then I looked at Shane.

“That slap just settled things between us. You won’t have to be embarrassed by me showing up at the airport or visiting you on set anymore.”

Finally, I looked past them at Harrison and Jocelyn.

I no longer cared whether the transmigrator had pushed Jocelyn into the pool.

“Mr. Kane,” I said, looking at his cold, handsome face.

“I’m sorry I spent the past three years pestering you and making your life difficult.

“I won’t show up in your lives again. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness.”

Those few words seemed to drain what little strength I had left.

I turned and walked toward the ballroom doors.

No one behind me said a word.

Perhaps my uncharacteristic calm had stunned them.

When I reached the doors, the night wind swept inside.

It was cold, and a light rain had started to fall.

I was wearing the red, low-cut dress the transmigrator loved. It was tacky and thin.

The wind made me shiver.

Then Shane’s furious voice rang out behind me.

“Summer! Once you walk out that door, don’t ever think you can come back!”

“You think acting like this will make us feel sorry for you? Dream on!”

I didn’t turn around.

I pushed open the heavy door and stepped into the rainy night.

The wind whipped outside, and the rain soaked my hair in an instant.

Before I could make it down the steps, more than a dozen glaring flashlight beams suddenly lit up the darkness ahead.

“She’s out! That shameless Summer Leigh is out!”

“Surround her! Don’t let her get away!”

A short-haired girl rushed to the front and splashed a cup of ice water all over me.

At the end of the year, Newford hosted the city’s most prestigious business gala.I wore a perfectly tailored designer suit and entered as the investment world’s biggest rising star of the year. The ballroom glittered with lights. I held a glass of champagne after wrapping up a conversation with several investors about upcoming projects. When I turned around, I came face-to-face with four people I knew and barely recognized.Mason, Shane, Wesley, and Harrison.I couldn’t imagine how much effort the three Leigh brothers had gone through just to get into a gala at this level. They looked much older and more haggard.Half of Mason’s hair had turned white, and his once-straight back had begun to stoop.Shane’s face was covered in stubble. He had grown so thin he was almost unrecognizable, and the confidence of the A-list star he used to be was gone.Wesley looked even worse. His eyes were unfocused, and he seemed utterly lifeless.Meanwhile, Harrison stared at me with his mouth hanging ope

[Summer, where are you?][I’ve been looking for you all night. Please answer your phone.][Just let me know you’re safe. I’m begging you.]The golden boy of the capital’s elite, who had always acted like he was above everyone else, was actually begging me.I stared at the last text, my finger hovering over the screen for a second. Then I deleted every message without hesitation.Dawn was breaking outside.I switched off my phone and pulled out the SIM card linked to every number in the Leigh family. Then I walked over to the clinic’s trash can and dropped it in.The first rays of sunlight fell across the street, bright enough to make me squint.A debt of forty million dollars sounded like an impossible sum to repay. But they all seemed to have forgotten that before the transmigrator took over my body, I had never been a woman who had to rely on the Leigh family to survive.Three years earlier, I had already secured several key patents and secretly invested in an overseas pharmaceutical

For three years, the transmigrator had chased Harrison and bought outrageously expensive gifts for the Leigh brothers to show off. She’d maxed out all my credit cards and taken out high-interest online loans in my name. The principal and interest came to $40 million. That was the parting gift she’d left me: kicked out of my home and saddled with a mountain of debt.As I stared at the numbers, my phone suddenly vibrated.Shane was calling.I watched his name flash on the screen for several seconds before I answered.“Summer!”As soon as the call connected, Shane’s voice came through. It trembled with panic. “You finally picked up… Where are you? Do you know how hard it’s raining? Your feet are still bleeding. Tell me where you are, and I’ll come get you right now!”I moved the phone away from my ear. “What do you want?”My tone made Shane freeze.“Summer… I’m sorry.”The superstar who’d never been willing to back down now sounded close to tears.“We checked the hotel security footage…

Mason’s face was cold, and his voice came out stiff. “Play it.”The butler set the tablet on the table. The footage was clear. Summer had been standing quietly by the pool, looking at the view.Jocelyn walked over on her own. The moment she saw Harrison appear around the corner, she smiled at Summer, then suddenly leaned backward into the pool without warning.Summer hadn’t even raised a hand. When the video ended, an even heavier silence fell over everyone.Shane stared at the screen, looking as if all the strength had drained out of him.“N-no. That’s impossible!”He looked at his right hand. That was the hand he’d used to slap Summer half an hour earlier. He’d hit her with all his strength, splitting the corner of her mouth.“Jocelyn, what’s going on?”Mason’s voice had lost its usual composure. He turned and fixed his gaze on her.Jocelyn dropped to her knees. “Mason, Shane, I didn’t mean to…“Summer scared me. I thought she was going to push me. I was so nervous that I slipped… I

Harrison froze.“Last month, Jocelyn fell down the stairs on her own. When I said I hadn’t pushed her, did you believe me?“Today, she jumped into the pool herself. When I said I hadn’t touched her, did any of you believe me?”Harrison’s face grew paler with every question.“Harrison, for the past three years, whenever Jocelyn and I had a conflict, all of you blamed me without even asking what happened. You’d already decided I was a cruel, jealous person.“So I admitted I was guilty. Isn’t that what you wanted all along?”I gave him a bitter smile. “Now you’ve got what you wanted, and you’re asking why I didn’t defend myself. Harrison, don’t you see how ridiculous you all are?”Rain fell between us.Harrison’s tall frame swayed.“Summer…”He instinctively took a step toward me, reaching out as if he wanted to hold on to something.Just then, a night bus pulled up at the stop by the road.I didn’t look at him again. I turned and climbed aboard. The driver, an older man, saw how miserabl

Harrison seized Jocelyn by the wrist. He snatched the necklace from her and said coldly, “There’s an S engraved on the back of the pendant. Three years ago, Summer wouldn’t even take it off to sleep!“When did it become something your mother left you?”A flash of lightning split the sky with a thunderclap.Mason and Shane whipped around to stare at Jocelyn. Her face went deathly pale. “I—I…”Shane snatched the necklace and turned the pendant over in a panic.Sure enough, a tiny S was engraved on the back. So, Summer hadn’t lied. The one who’d been stealing and lying all along was Jocelyn—the girl they’d always treasured. Then why had Summer looked so cold and resolute as she walked into the rain?Harrison shoved Jocelyn aside and ran straight into the downpour without even taking an umbrella.“Summer!”His panicked voice came from behind me, mixed with the sound of hurried footsteps.I heard him.But I didn’t look back or even slow down. The rain grew heavier as I walked barefoot down
