The air outside the pack house felt like it had turned to ice when we stepped outside. Every person in the yard was tense, and their eyes were fixed only on the line of strangers standing just beyond the gates. The moonlight shone on the deadly weapons in their hands, highlighting them for us to see.

At the front of it all, Alpha Coleman was standing tall. His face looked smug, and he had his arms folded over his chest confidently. His voice was deep, and when he spoke, it echoed throughout the crowd.

“Your sons have rejected the girl,” he called out. “She’s free to be claimed.”

The words made my heart almost stop. I froze where I stood, digging my nails into my palms.

That wasn’t true. Not even close.

Alpha Thomas stepped forward from the crowd of people who’d gathered around. He was trying to keep his face neutral but I could see the anger in his eyes. “She has not been rejected,” he said. The anger had seeped into his voice too. “And you’re not taking her.”
