Chapter 5

Author: Zoe bear
The family portrait burned into my vision, searing through my eyes, making them sting. Their family—because it had never been mine—had never included me.

I drifted home in a daze, collapsing onto the bed and staring blankly at the ceiling. Time lost meaning.

Then came the sound of a car door slamming outside, jolting me back to reality. The faint scent of leather and cologne reached my sensitive nose before the front door opened. They had returned.

The bedroom door creaked, and Joseph strode in. He moved to my bedside, bent down, and enveloped me in his arms like I was some fragile human porcelain doll.

“Wife,” he murmured, his breath warm against my ear. “I’m sorry. Work has kept me busy these past few days. I haven’t had time to be with you.”

I swallowed a sarcastic snort.

“The day after tomorrow is your birthday,” he continued, “I spoke with my parents, and we’ve decided to throw you a grand celebration.”

Grand. Oh, how generous. I bit my tongue, refusing to respond. His lips brushed my forehead in a lingering kiss that felt like a brand, then he tucked the blanket around me and left.

As soon as the door clicked shut, a memory crashed over me.

Five years ago. My birthday.

That was the day everything changed. The day my parents announced my engagement to Joseph at a glittering pack ceremony. It was supposed to be a celebration, but Yolanda, with her endless need to be the center of attention, had turned it into chaos. Her jealousy erupted like a volcano, and by the end of the night, she’d rounded up a pack of rogue wolves to kidnap me. The bruises had faded, but the scars—physical and emotional—remained.

Yolanda and I shared a birthday. Yet every year, it was her party, her spotlight, her admirers. The guests would swarm around her, fawning over her golden curls and saccharine smile. I was the forgotten shadow lurking in the background.

And why wouldn’t they adore her? My parents had crafted her image carefully, keeping her secret—Fake Daughter—hidden from everyone. They even had the audacity to blame my awkwardness, my so-called “shelter upbringing,” for every social misstep. Meanwhile, Yolanda would sneer at me, whispering venomous remarks like, “Only I deserve this. You’re nothing but an orphan.”

She had always reveled in stealing my place.

Tonight would be no different.

I knew her too well.

When she appeared at my birthday banquet dressed as a server, her face hidden behind a mask, I wasn’t surprised. My wolf sniffed disdainfully, her contempt palpable. But my family? Oh, their reactions were priceless.

They dragged her into the guest lounge.

“What are you doing here?” my father hissed, “Are you trying to ruin everything?”

“She misses home,” my mother countered, her tone pleading. “She hasn’t been back in years. Please, let her stay.”

“She’s dressed like this anyway. Fiona won’t recognize her.”

Joseph, predictably, sided with Yolanda.

“Honey, today’s my birthday too,” Yolanda cooed, her voice dripping with faux innocence. “I want to cut the cake later.”

My wolf bristled, and I clenched my fists beneath the table.

“Alright,” Joseph agreed easily, like the spineless opportunist he was. “Since Fiona is in a wheelchair, it’s easier if you do it.”

And just like that, Yolanda stole my moment. Again. She picked up the knife with a smug grin, cut into my exclusive birthday cake, and then, as if for ridicule, sliced the chocolate statue of me in half at the waist.

A loud crash followed. She shoved the cake stand, sending it careening toward me. Gasps filled the room as the stand narrowly missed my face, the metal support scraping the floor with a grating screech.

Joseph rushed to my side, his face a mask of concern. “Wife, are you alright?”

His words were for show. We both knew he’d seen everything.

“Clumsy!” he barked at Yolanda, his performance flawless. “Get out of here.”

My parents, relieved by his outburst, quickly ordered the mess cleaned up. The banquet resumed as if nothing had happened. Joseph slipped back into his role as the perfect host, his charm as fake as Yolanda’s smiles.

I couldn’t breathe. The air felt heavy, suffocating. My wolf itched to escape, to run free under the moonlight, away from the pretense and lies. I reached for my wheelchair, ready to leave, but before I could move, a pair of hands grabbed the handles.

My wolf growled, her instincts flaring. A familiar scent reached my nose—one that sent shivers down my spine.

“Going somewhere, Fiona?” a low, mocking voice murmured.

Yolanda pushed me toward the garden, her grip firm, unyielding.

“Sister, long time no see,” she purred, every syllable dripping with smugness.

“Did you notice? When they sang the birthday song earlier, every single pair of eyes was on me.”

“So many years have passed, and yet they still love me more than you.”

“You should’ve just stayed an orphan,” she sneered. “Why did you come back, trying to compete with me? Look at you now—crippled, stuck with a husband who was never yours to begin with. If I were you, I wouldn’t even have the dignity to live another day.”

I lifted my head, meeting her gaze without flinching.

“The only one who should be ashamed is you.” My voice was calm, but every word struck like a knife.

Joseph was so enraged that he let go of his son, his hand flying up, ready to strike. But Yolanda struck first. The sharp crack echoed through the room, leaving Joseph momentarily stunned.Their father's face darkened with fury. "Look at what you've become! We spoiled you rotten!"But Yolanda's eyes gleamed with something dark, something unsettling. The rage in them was almost bloodthirsty."What now? Are you thinking of raising a hand against me too?"Yolanda’s lips curled into a slow, sinister smile."Dad, how could I ever bring myself to hit you?""After all, my son is the sole alpha heir to the Blue Moon pack. Naturally, I have to take good care of you."Hearing Yolanda’s true thoughts laid bare, their father’s face burned with fury."You’re dreaming! Even if Fiona is abroad, she is still my daughter. Our ties haven’t been severed!"His voice thundered through the room as he yanked out his phone. "I’m calling a lawyer right now to draft my will! When I die, you won’t get a single c

“I’m just a victim of circumstances…”“Enough. Joseph, don’t try to make yourself sound so pitiful. You had your selfish motives. If I had been the Alpha heir, staying by my side wouldn’t have been a bad option for you. But if I was ruined and Yolanda’s son took my place, you’d still benefit. At your core, you’re just as selfish as she is. You two are cut from the same cloth.”Joseph’s face paled at my words.“But everything I’ve done for you, all the care and love, was real. Can’t you forgive me for the sake of our ten years together?”“Impossible.” My voice was firm, unwavering. “Joseph, these are the consequences of your own choices. You deal with them yourself.”I pressed the call button by my bed and calmly told the nurse I would not be seeing him again.Joseph was thrown out.A week later, news spread like wildfire—Yolanda was finally facing trial. The pack gossip channels were ablaze, and you could practically hear the collective howls of schadenfreude echoing through the territ

“If we wanted to betray you, we would’ve handed you over right after You and the rogues kidnapped Fiona five years ago! Why would we go through the trouble of faking your drowning, smuggling you abroad, and giving you a comfortable life?”“Now you dare throw accusations at us? You ungrateful wretch!”Yolanda clenched her fists, forcing down the fire rising in her throat. She steadied her voice, though the tremor in her tone betrayed her struggle.“That’s not what I meant, Mom, Dad. I’ve always known how much you’ve done for me. But if I step into that courtroom, my entire identity will be exposed. My reputation as an Alpha Heiress will be ruined. How am I supposed to lead the Blue Moon Pack after that?”Her plea was met with a cold scoff.“And now you're under the delusion that you're going to inherit Blue Moon Pack?” her father snapped. “Tomorrow, you son're going to quit school before the wrath of the masses reaches it. Then, you’re going to get the hell out of the pack and stay ther

“I’ve already said everything before, but you refused to listen. Now my personal information has been exposed. I’m leaving the country. Everything I did was at your request, not my own will. The recording speaks for itself; people will judge accordingly. My career has been ruined by you, and now my medical license has been revoked by the League of Werewolf Doctors. The favor I owed you is repaid. Goodbye.”With that, he rose to his feet and strode out, not sparing my father a second glance. Before boarding his flight, he made one final move: a blog post distancing himself from the scandal. The recording revealed how he had repeatedly advised my father to reconsider, sparing him from the worst of the netizens’ wrath.Meanwhile, my father had no such escape. His phone buzzed relentlessly as calls flooded in from the Blue Moon packhouse. Desperation clung to his every breath, but before he could process his next move, Yolanda burst into the room.“Dad! What do we do now? Reporters were sw

Yolanda’s face twisted at my words, her pride taking a direct hit. Without warning, she raised her foot and kicked my wheelchair.“What’s a cripple like you so smug about? Dad and Mom erased all the evidence for me. No matter how arrogant you act, you can’t touch me!”Seething, she shoved me forward again, her grip tightening like a vice. A slow, eerie smile curled her lips as we neared the pool’s edge.“Let me show you who they truly care about.”Before I could react, she pushed my wheelchair with a sharp jolt. The world tilted. An instant later, ice-cold water swallowed me whole. The sharp chill surged into my lungs, burning my skin. My limbs flailed uselessly as the weight of the chair dragged me down.“Wife!”“Daughter!”Joseph and my parents’ frantic shouts cut through the chaos. Water splashed violently as Joseph swam toward me.I reached out, desperate to grasp onto something—someone. But just as I thought he was coming for me, he bypassed me without hesitation. His hands found
