Every question on the college entrance exam was one I had seen before. After I handed in my papers, I was the first to rush out of the examination hall. I said to the reporter who was interviewing me, "The questions aren't hard. I hope I'll go to the same school as him!" After I said that, someone yelled, "Cut! Thanks to our generous boss, everyone will get five hundred dollars in tips!" Everyone cheered as my mother slowly walked over. "After you returned to us, you've always scored better than Courtney, and she's been depressed because of it. She said that her entire life was built on a lie. "So, for you—our biological daughter—we built an exact replica of an examination hall and staged this entire fake exam just to cheer her up." My boyfriend, Kyle Reid, held a bouquet, looking perfectly unconcerned "Actually, Courtney and I took the real exam in the examination hall next door. "Do you really think that you'll be the top scorer? Courtney's the one who came up with your papers. You can just treat it as practice. "You can repeat your senior year, and we'll wait for you at Southvale University." I clenched my fists and smiled bitterly. As expected, once I said my birthday wish out loud, it would no longer come true. What they didn't know was that the university I had received guaranteed admission to wasn't Southvale University. It was the Federal Institute of Defense Technology.

Chapter 1

My blood ran cold as I looked at the actors around me wrapping up.

I looked at Kyle Reid.

"Just one year? What was all the effort I put in throughout my senior year for?"

His gaze grew a little frantic as he reached out to wipe my tears.

When I ducked and evaded him, he sighed.

"Lily, you always get good results. A year is nothing. I've found a boarding school for you.

"Let your parents spend some time with Courtney this year. After you returned, she has been suffering a lot…"

I felt the scar on my back throbbing in pain.

While I was locked up by Courtney's biological mother in the shed and snatching food from dogs, Courtney was being doted on by my parents.

How had she suffered?

My lips curved bitterly. "She's the daughter of a human trafficker. How is it possible that she's suffered more than me, the one who got trafficked?"

Kyle tightened his grip around the bouquet as his face slowly hardened.

"Those are all lies! The villagers said that the family treated you well.

"You're acting again! No wonder your parents never wanted to attend your parent-teacher meeting…"

I was stunned.

Every year during the parent-teacher meeting, my mother would randomly come down with some allergic reactions.

I attended the meeting by myself, and I would go to the hospital to accompany her after that.

I saw black spots as my body swayed.

Kyle stopped talking and reached out to steady me.

I looked at my mother, who was sending text messages with a wide smile on her face.

She glanced at my pale face and spoke indifferently.

"That's right, we've been going to Courtney's parent-teacher meetings for more than a decade. How could we miss it just because you've returned?"

My heart was bleeding from the hurt.

"Whenever you got sick during a parent-teacher meeting, I went to donate blood for you…"

My mother answered slowly, her tone casual.

"Ever since you returned home, Courtney's been depressed. She's always cutting herself.

"Since you have the same blood type, it wouldn't have hurt to have some emergency supply for her. That's just one way you can make it up to her…"

At that very moment, the tears that I had been holding back for a very long time finally streamed down my cheeks.

Kyle frantically started to wipe the tears off my cheeks. He hesitated before passing the flowers over.

"I made a promise to you that after we graduate from university, I'd propose to you. I'm keeping that promise.

"I memorized the questions from the real examination paper and wrote them down for you as a birthday present. I guarantee that you'll get into Southvale University next year."

I glanced at the flowers. It was filled with pink flowers that Courtney liked. I smiled mockingly before stuffing the bouquet back into his hands.

"I don't want things that are not mine."

I stared at Kyle and said softly, "That includes you. That includes you. I find you filthy."

His eyes widened in shock as his knuckles turned white.

Suddenly, he chuckled.

"Lily, can you even count how many people have touched you?

"You think I'm filthy? What kind of clean future could someone like you possibly have? "
