Chapter 4

Author: Big Bready
Like a madwoman, I charged into the hospital.

The nurse, Anna White, stopped me. "The patient's not in a stable condition. We have to give her an injection. Is that alright?"

I passed her the bank card with trembling hands. "Save her, please! I'll pay for all medical expenses."

Anna swiped the card and then glanced at me. "There's no money on this card."

My mind went blank.

How was that possible? Over the past three years, I had saved all my scholarship money and Kyle's birthday money into this card.

Kyle called me.

"Lily, you gave Courtney quite a scare just now. I'll make it up to her by giving her a fireworks display. I'll use your money for that so Courtney will feel better about it."

My voice was trembling. "Sloan's surgery…"

Kyle chuckled. "You found out about it? It's the surprise I've prepared for you. I've found the best doctor to operate on her. Very soon, she'll be able to stand up again. Please don't be angry anymore…"

He hung up on me.

Before I could make sense of what had happened, the operating room door opened.

They wheeled Sloan out. However, she was covered by a white sheet.

When I went home, the house was dark, save for some candlelight.

Kyle held a cake and passed it to me with a smile. "Lily, happy birthday."

I did not take it.

He turned around and waved at someone behind him. "Oh, by the way, Helen's here too."

I could not believe my own ears. Back then, Helen had resisted arrest, so she stabbed Sloan three times. She received a combined five-year prison sentence for her multiple crimes.

"You were right! Courtney's graduating today, so her mother should be around too."

Kyle sounded casual. "Regardless, she's your adoptive mother too. You should cut her a slice of cake."

Helen walked out of the dark and smiled at me.

Outside the windows, fireworks went off.

I took a step back abruptly and slapped her reaching hand.

Courtney rushed out and stopped me with teary eyes.

"Lily, if you're unhappy, just vent it on me.

"We're a family, it's not good for your reputation that you sent your adoptive mother to jail.

"She got an early release today. I just want to bring her here to beg for your forgiveness."

My parents held Courtney's hands with their eyes filled with concern.

"What a great girl. You've grown up with us, of course we know who you are as a person."

Courtney got closer to me and whispered in my ear.

"Lily, you're a jinx. Sloan was half-alive. I didn't want to harm her, but you publicly shamed me for being a trafficker's daughter!

"I showed her your apology video, and she insisted on going over to support you in person.

"Kyle still tried to get her treated. I got someone to swap the anesthetic for saline. She died in agony on the operating table."

My body acted faster than my brain.

I charged toward Courtney and choked her. Then, I slapped her fiercely.

The slap was very loud.

Everyone was stunned.

My mother screamed, "You're crazy! How dare you hit her? She's never suffered so much as a scratch!"

Kyle kicked me in the knee.

He carried Courtney, who was trembling, in his arms as he yelled at me, "Why are you like this? Don't assume that you'll be my wife just because I promised to propose to you!"

I shrieked, "Her mother locked me up, and she killed my lifesaver! Why can't I hit her?"

Kyle was stunned.

My father said coldly, "Shut up with your lies! I bet you're still angry at Courtney over the fake examinations.

"I'll write the school a letter to apply for a leave of absence from school! I'll only let you out after you learn to get along with your sister and allow her to attend school in peace!"

I saw black spots in my vision.

I was locked in my bedroom.

Then, I heard Kyle's voice from outside of my bedroom. "We're taking Courtney on a graduation trip. We'll bring you next year."

I grabbed the flight ticket in my hand and smiled bitterly.

I would never see them again…

On the day the results were released, Kyle went back home to submit his college applications.

At that moment, he realized he had not heard from me in a very long time.

My mother asked the nanny, Jane Lowes, tentatively.

"Is Lily doing alright at home? Is she still throwing a tantrum?"

Jane was stunned.

"On the day you left, Lily went to the airport.

"Didn't she go with you?"

When the verdict was made, it was a sunny day. I stood before the court with copies of the court judgement. Liam stood beside me. On the day Courtney started college, I took half a day off. Courtney's dorm was located on the second floor. It was a four-person dorm, and her bed was located near the window. "Lily, you're really here." She put down her comb and turned around. "When Dad told me that, I thought he must have been mistaken." I sat down on her bed. She was the only one in the dorm. "It's a nice dorm," I said. "Of course." Courtney leaned back against her chair and crossed her legs. "It's the best dorm of Southvale University. Mom and Dad got someone to get it for me." She glanced at me with the same smile. "Let me tell you something, Lily. So what if you go to Federal Institute of Defense Technology? Mom and Dad only like me. Kyle too. When you're running laps in your stupid university, who will remember you?"I looked at her. "Are you done?" I asked. She straightened up in her chair and crossed her legs again. "You looked into Sloan's incident for three months. Have you found any ev

The training camp of Federal Institute of Defense Technology was located on the outskirts. It was surrounded by mountains. I had already been there for 17 days.Every morning, I got up at 5:30 and began with a two-mile warm-up run, followed by tactical classes and physical training. At night, we underwent additional training.Liam George showed up on the third day. I immediately recognized him. He was older than me by five years. When I was younger, he stayed on the neighboring street. When Helen hit me, he would come over and give me a sweet. After that, his relatives took him with them. We had never met since then. "Lily." He stood before me and glanced at the name tag pinned on my chest. "It's really you." He got a lot taller, and his shoulders were broad. However, his smile stayed the same. "Liam." He looked at me for two seconds before flicking his finger against my cap. "Stop with the formalities. Back then, you would run behind me and call me Liam." He smil

"Impossible," said my mother as she started laughing. "She didn't even go for the college entrance exam. You must have made a mistake." My father also shook his head with a frown. Courtney bit her lower lip without saying a word. She was already tearing up. Kyle stood in the middle of the living room. His phone screen was still showing the two unanswered text messages. Harold stood dumbfoundedly. He swept his gaze across everyone as his smile slowly turned into confusion. "Wait… none of you knew about it?"He pushed his glasses up his nose bridge and said seriously. "Lily has been accepted by the Federal Institute of Defense Technology through its special early-entry program. The offer had been extended last year. She didn't need to go for the college entrance exam at all." Harold paused and added, "She went to the examination hall to accompany someone, I think. It was just a formality. She didn't need the results." Everyone was silent for a few seconds. "Where's t

"Kyle, is Lily angry?"Courtney bit her lower lip and looked guilty. "It's all my fault. I insisted on taking you on the graduation trip. Lily must have wanted to go with us too…""What does it have to do with you?"My mother snorted. "She's the one who acted out of line. She ran off without telling us. That's rude." My father's expression sank. "Send her a text message and tell her to come home immediately. She's a young woman. It's not right for her to stay out for so many days." Kyle did not say anything. He stared at the unanswered text message, yet he felt somewhat relieved. He was a little worried. That day, when they were taking graduation photos, he could still remember how I had charged toward Courtney. Also, outside the examination hall, when I told him through teary eyes that I no longer wanted him because he was dirty, he thought he had run into a huge problem. He felt relieved as he thought that I followed him on the trip. He brought Courtney out on th
