Chapter 2

Author: Big Bready
His figure slowly merged with his younger self from three years ago. I got lost in the reverie.

When I had just returned home one night, Courtney got some gangsters to stop me in the alley.

The moment they laid their hands on me, I did not cry or shout. Instead, I sank my teeth into the leader's index finger and bit it off.

After being hit and scolded by Courtney's biological mother, Helen Smith, for many years, I knew all too well that begging for mercy would not help.

When I was thrown against the wall, a boy stood before me.

He grabbed my hand and ran with me. "If you couldn't fight them, why didn't you shout for help?"

He was like a moon that gently shone down on me.

For the first time, I realized there was a third option besides taking the beatings and fighting back: asking for help.

Hence, when Kyle asked if he could be my desk mate so I could tutor him, I agreed without any hesitation.

His results improved, and everyone tried to guess the reason behind this wealthy young man's change.

I once heard him mumbling in his sleep.

"Lily, I want to have a future with you."

In contrast to those words, he was exposing my scars to everyone for Courtney.

When my eyes teared up, he softened his tone and jangled the keys in his hand.

"I bought an apartment near Southvale University put it in your name. You can do your revisions there, and I'll be there with you.

"It's just one year. Don't make such a big deal out of it."

My mother nodded in satisfaction. "You're a great man, Kyle. I really don't know what you see in Lily…"

I snatched the keys and threw them at his face.

"Is that going to be my house, or is it going to be a love nest for you and Courtney?"

He grabbed the keys tightly. His eyes were filled with fury after I exposed his true intentions.

Just as he was about to say something, my mother's phone rang.

The atmosphere immediately changed.

His gaze immediately softened. "Courtney's done with her examinations. I'm going to give her these flowers. You should reflect on your own actions."

After they turned around and left, the staff members took down the backdrop. The previously bustling examination hall became completely deserted.

My phone started ringing and cut the silent tension in the air.

"Ms. Anderson, you've received guaranteed admission to the Federal Institute of Defense Technology. A closed training program begins in three days, ahead of the regular term. Are you available to attend?"

The two plane tickets in my arms were damp with tears. They had been for the graduation trip I planned to take with Kyle in three days, but now, the remaining ticket had become my way out.

I tore his ticket into pieces and said softly, "Yes, I'll be there."

After I returned home, the nanny started mocking me.

"You really think you're some pampered young lady now? Courtney's their the true heiress. Your room is worse than the helpers' rooms."

The tiny attic contained all my belongings.

I only had one photograph. It was of me and the female police officer in crutches, Sloan Scott, who had saved me from that village.

Her leg had been broken while she was rescuing me.

I chose to go to the National Defense University because they promised to transfer Sloan to the military hospital. On top of that, they would help me rent a place near the university.

Just as I was about to head to the hospital, Courtney sent me a video.

At the class reunion, someone was teasing Kyle.

"Kyle, why are you late? You only got close to Lily because of Courtney. Have you fallen in love with her?!"

My hand tightened on my suitcase handle.

"Kyle's charming. You've managed to make that nerd, Lily, miss her examination!

"The entire school watched the act of you pretending to talk in your sleep and confessing your love to Lily. That silly girl was the only one who didn't know the truth!"

Kyle sounded irritated.

"She doesn't belong in the same world as us. She should be grateful that I'm using her as practice."

My hand trembled as I turned off the screen.

My eyes were filled with tears. I bit my lower lip to stop myself from crying.

The next second, someone kicked my door open.

My father's roar was deafening.

"Kyle said you're the only one who had touched Courtney's bouquet!

"What did you do to give her an allergic reaction?

"She's going to take her graduation photo soon! Are you planning for her to live in your shadow forever?!"

On the day Courtney started college, I took half a day off. Courtney's dorm was located on the second floor. It was a four-person dorm, and her bed was located near the window. "Lily, you're really here." She put down her comb and turned around. "When Dad told me that, I thought he must have been mistaken." I sat down on her bed. She was the only one in the dorm. "It's a nice dorm," I said. "Of course." Courtney leaned back against her chair and crossed her legs. "It's the best dorm of Southvale University. Mom and Dad got someone to get it for me." She glanced at me with the same smile. "Let me tell you something, Lily. So what if you go to Federal Institute of Defense Technology? Mom and Dad only like me. Kyle too. When you're running laps in your stupid university, who will remember you?"I looked at her. "Are you done?" I asked. She straightened up in her chair and crossed her legs again. "You looked into Sloan's incident for three months. Have you found any ev

The training camp of Federal Institute of Defense Technology was located on the outskirts. It was surrounded by mountains. I had already been there for 17 days.Every morning, I got up at 5:30 and began with a two-mile warm-up run, followed by tactical classes and physical training. At night, we underwent additional training.Liam George showed up on the third day. I immediately recognized him. He was older than me by five years. When I was younger, he stayed on the neighboring street. When Helen hit me, he would come over and give me a sweet. After that, his relatives took him with them. We had never met since then. "Lily." He stood before me and glanced at the name tag pinned on my chest. "It's really you." He got a lot taller, and his shoulders were broad. However, his smile stayed the same. "Liam." He looked at me for two seconds before flicking his finger against my cap. "Stop with the formalities. Back then, you would run behind me and call me Liam." He smil

"Impossible," said my mother as she started laughing. "She didn't even go for the college entrance exam. You must have made a mistake." My father also shook his head with a frown. Courtney bit her lower lip without saying a word. She was already tearing up. Kyle stood in the middle of the living room. His phone screen was still showing the two unanswered text messages. Harold stood dumbfoundedly. He swept his gaze across everyone as his smile slowly turned into confusion. "Wait… none of you knew about it?"He pushed his glasses up his nose bridge and said seriously. "Lily has been accepted by the Federal Institute of Defense Technology through its special early-entry program. The offer had been extended last year. She didn't need to go for the college entrance exam at all." Harold paused and added, "She went to the examination hall to accompany someone, I think. It was just a formality. She didn't need the results." Everyone was silent for a few seconds. "Where's t

"Kyle, is Lily angry?"Courtney bit her lower lip and looked guilty. "It's all my fault. I insisted on taking you on the graduation trip. Lily must have wanted to go with us too…""What does it have to do with you?"My mother snorted. "She's the one who acted out of line. She ran off without telling us. That's rude." My father's expression sank. "Send her a text message and tell her to come home immediately. She's a young woman. It's not right for her to stay out for so many days." Kyle did not say anything. He stared at the unanswered text message, yet he felt somewhat relieved. He was a little worried. That day, when they were taking graduation photos, he could still remember how I had charged toward Courtney. Also, outside the examination hall, when I told him through teary eyes that I no longer wanted him because he was dirty, he thought he had run into a huge problem. He felt relieved as he thought that I followed him on the trip. He brought Courtney out on th

Like a madwoman, I charged into the hospital. The nurse, Anna White, stopped me. "The patient's not in a stable condition. We have to give her an injection. Is that alright?" I passed her the bank card with trembling hands. "Save her, please! I'll pay for all medical expenses." Anna swiped the card and then glanced at me. "There's no money on this card." My mind went blank. How was that possible? Over the past three years, I had saved all my scholarship money and Kyle's birthday money into this card. Kyle called me. "Lily, you gave Courtney quite a scare just now. I'll make it up to her by giving her a fireworks display. I'll use your money for that so Courtney will feel better about it." My voice was trembling. "Sloan's surgery…"Kyle chuckled. "You found out about it? It's the surprise I've prepared for you. I've found the best doctor to operate on her. Very soon, she'll be able to stand up again. Please don't be angry anymore…"He hung up on me. Before I could ma
