I woke up on a bench in the park near my department building. I can't remember how I got in here. I must have been so tired preparing for the midterm exams. I am now a sophomore student taking up nursing. Nursing is not really my first choice for my major, but my mom insisted that I take this course. As she always says "Being a nurse is one of the most stable jobs. Schools and businesses may close but hospitals will never have that problem." I protested for a long time, but as everyone knows, Asian moms are known as tiger moms. Emily Chavez, a nursing college student (that's who she thinks she is) is not known by many. She has always been quiet in class and doesn't have many friends. There are only two places she usually hangs out in: the library and the school park. She usually goes to these places to relax and many times, she sleeps there. No one really pays attention to her. She sometimes thinks that when she disappears or when she is absent from her class, no one including the professors would notice it. She spent the past two weeks preparing for her midterm exams. Emily woke up from the alarm from her clock on her bedside table. She got up immediately and checked her phone. It's 7AM. She's aware that it's 7AM since her alarm clock is set to ring at that time, but she still wants to check it just in case it was too early or too late for her to wake up. She went straight to her small bathroom to take a shower. Her room is quite spacious with a few decorations hanging on the wall. She considers herself a minimalist. She doesn't feel comfortable posting anything on the walls in her room. She's also not that particular with colors. Her walls have a white floral wallpaper and the color of her bedsheet, pillowcases and blanket don't match. It's her mom who changes them once a month. Emily was confident in answering the questions in her biology exam, but the familiarity of the questions including the choices bothers her. She was surprised to see that it had the exact questions she saw in her dream. She looked around to check the reaction from other students. "Is it like de ja vu?" She asked herself. Can it still be part of her dream. "Focus on your test paper, Miss Chavez!" Professor Blakely shouted. He was staring at Emily with a suspicious look on his face. No one in the room said anything. Everyone was busy with their own test. Emily could feel a sense of guilt inside her. She clearly remembers how she checked the questions from her dream and what the answers were. Although she doesn't need to recall the answers from the paper since she is familiar with all the questions in the test, she still feels uncomfortable knowing that her classmates worked so hard for this test. "Here we go again." Emily murmured to herself. She was about to go back to her room when her mom shouted her name. "Emily! How long will you stand there? Don't tell me you won't eat your breakfast again? Working really changed you, huh! Earning your own money doesn't mean you can ignore the food I prepare at home!" Her mom always has a way to make her feel guilty which in reality is not effective at all. It has only been the second day for Emily to work. She can't even remember how she started working. Knowing that her mom won't stop nagging, she sat down on the dining table and examine the food in front of her: fried rice, fried fish, fried egg and the meat dish they had last night. On normal days, Emily would eat everything without any worries. She loves everything her mom cooks. But today is a special day, this is the first morning she would have breakfast as Professor Emily. Being a nurse is a job mostly for women, Nurses have to be caring and understanding to their patients. Women have that motherly instinct which means taking care of others can be easier for them than men. Most people in Peter's family have the same thought. Nursing course is for women, but Peter ignored them all. Peter grew up in a simple family from the Philippines. His family moved to the country since he was young. His mom is a nurse while his dad works in a small restaurant downtown. It was his parents' dream for him to be architect or an engineer, but Peter ended up taking up nursing for his major despite his parents refusal. "You should listen to me. I'm a nurse. This job is too difficult. I just want you to be like other boys who can spend time with their family on holidays. I regret not being able to spend many Christmas and Thanksgiving with you and James because I have to work." It was when he announced to the family that he applied for a nursing school and he got accepted.
