Valentina’s POV

My sandal were gone. My one foot burned with every step across the scalding sand.

Each breath felt like flame scraping down my throat. My lips were dry, cracked and tasted like salt and regret.

I didn’t know how far I’d wandered. I didn’t care. The wind had scattered my tracks, and Raffaele was nowhere in sight.

Good.

Maybe I needed to be lost — to pay for my sins.

It felt like it was just me, the desert, and God. So I guess it was time to confess.

But how could I confess when I didn’t even know how I felt?

Would my father turn in his grave if I ever gave my love to the enemy?

I don’t think I could forgive myself.

The sun hung mercilessly overhead, blistering the dunes and my skin alike. Sweat dripped into my lashes.

My dress clung to me, heavy with dust and heat. I dragged one foot after the other, stumbling.

My shadow stretched long behind me, the only proof I still existed, even when everything inside me felt scorched hollow.

My body ached but my he

Raffaele’s POV They rushed Valentina into emergency surgery, her blood staining everything—sheets, gloves, and floors. How could someone lose so much blood? I stood motionless outside the operating room in the corridor, unable to move or breathe. My shirt was still soaked with her blood, clinging to my skin like a second punishment. Hembapu Zimmermann stepped beside me and clasped a firm hand on my shoulder. “They are doing emergency surgery, sir. Don’t worry, Mr. Ricchezza—she is in safe hands, the very best. She is in the hands of God and the best surgeons Swakopmund has to offer,” he said soothingly. “Are you a man of religion, Mr. Raffaele? Now would be a good time to pray. I can pray with you if you’d like?” “Yes,” I said quietly. “I would appreciate it.” So we prayed in silence. Then the silence broke as armed forces flooded the hospital corridor. Tension escalated instantly as two imposing, dark-skinned men exchanged looks that could kill—but somehow, they managed to

Raffaele’s POV I had followed that falcon on a whim. It dropped her sandal almost in my lap—like a sign from fate, an omen from God Himself. It had to mean something. She meant something to me. Even if she’d lied. Even if my spirit was crushed. I couldn’t let it end like this. I had to find her. I prayed silently in my heart for a miracle. I rode like a madman through the desert night, the wind slicing my face, my heart pounding louder than the hooves beneath me. Then I saw her. Barely standing. Limping on one leg, barefoot in sand that had burned like fire and now bit like ice. Her hair was tangled, her dress torn. But her spine was straight. Her chin lifted. I saw the defiance in her face—fierce and radiant even in the dark. She stared straight at them—Miles and Tariq, laughing like jackals in that dune buggy, like hunting her was just a game. I swear she smirked, fearless to the end. Then she turned her face fully toward the gun and just stared death in t

Valentina’s POV The desert blurred around me as I rode, fast, furious and aimless. I couldn’t see as sand stung my eyes, wind slapped my cheeks, but it was nothing compared to what burned inside me. Raffaele’s words still echoed in my head. Every accusation, every doubt. Did you sleep with them? You’re not worthy! I dug my heels in harder, pushing the horse faster towards it’s limits. I didn’t know where I was going—only that I had to get away. Eventually, the golden dunes gave way to something unexpected. Palm trees. A sliver pool of still water reflecting the sky. An oasis. I dismounted clumsily, nearly stumbling in the sand. My heart was racing. My chest felt tight. I didn’t cry—I couldn’t. I just… undid the straps of my sandals, let them fall, and walked into the water fully clothed. The chill bit into my skin. But I welcomed it. I wanted to wash everything off. The betrayal. The guilt. The ache in my chest that wouldn’t leave no matter how far I ran. I wanted Raff

Raffaele’s POV Then she kicked up the pace, the horse galloping faster across the golden sand. She rode with complete control. I sighed, smirking to myself. If only she’d ride me with that same passion. Maybe then, I could finally set her free. I finally caught my breath as I slid off my horse near the wreck. The ship lay half-buried in the sand, much of its original structure still intact. It looked so strange—like a skeleton rising from the dunes. “So what do you think, Valentina?” I asked, brushing the sand from my sleeve. “Does it excite you?” She didn’t even try to hide the spark in her eyes.“More than you know,” she said with a beaming voice. “Valentina…” I started, then paused. “That monk—Deva Pran. I don’t like him. He knows too much. And he never gives a straight answer.” She arched her brow. “Are you… jealous of a monk?” Her lips curled. “I thought they were supposed to be purified from… earthly temptations.” I scoffed. “He’s not a saint. Just a man in a robe wh

Raffaele's POV The desert rolled beneath us in endless folds of gold, the morning sun burning the dunes into molten waves. The only sound was the occasional roar of the flame above as our captain, Hembapu Zimmermann, adjusted the burner. Valentina stood beside me, the wind teasing strands of her dark hair across her cheek—her gaze locked on the horizon, like she already belonged, here with me by her side. “Do you like it, Valentina?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. She leaned into my chest for once. “Yes. I adore it.” “Do you adore the horizon… or me?” I said with a smirk. “Don’t be silly. You know how I feel about you,” she said, giving my chest a playful push. “Actually, no. I think I do—but then I make one wrong move, and suddenly I don’t know what’s up or down anymore.” “All within good time… as I said, Raffaele. Don’t be so impatient.” I sighed and just held her. Nothing was ever easy when it came to Valentina. Hembapu Zimmermann interrupted our quiet moment. “Prepare
