The royal gardens were shrouded in quiet.

"So this is how it ends," Caelan whispered.

A sudden breeze stirred the white lilies surrounding the memorial, rustling their petals like faint, whispering voices.

Caelan let out a long, ragged breath, resting his forehead against the chilled marble. "I wish you were here, Lucien. You always knew what to do. You always knew how to play the prince." His shoulders slumped, drained. "I don't."

For the first time since the council meeting, there was no audience. No watching eyes. No whispering ministers or grieving parents. Just him... and the dead.

"You’d probably tell me to stop sulking," Caelan murmured, a faint, fragile smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "You always did."

The smile died as quickly as it had appeared.

"I hate him," Caelan spat, the bitter words escaping before he could stop them.

His voice echoed softly against the surrounding stone walls.

"They call him the Wolf Prince. They say he’s drowned entire provinces in blood. They say children stop crying just at the mention of his name." Caelan let out a sharp, incredulous scoff. "And tomorrow... I am expected to be with him. To give him an heir."

"You deserve better than a fate forged in spite."

The voice came from behind him, deep and smooth as obsidian.

Caelan’s head snapped around.

A stranger stood several paces away near the edge of the grave-path. He was dressed entirely in unadorned brown traveling wools, the cowl of his cloak pulled low over dark hair that stirred gently in the wind. He was tall, broader in the shoulders and straighter in the spine than most men Caelan knew. Carrying himself with an innate dangerous authority.

Yet he wore no crest. No royal colors. No guards trailed behind him. In his hand, he held a simple, fresh bundle of white lilies.

Caelan hadn't heard a single footstep.

The stranger walked past him without another word, stopping before a plain memorial stone two rows down. He knelt, placing the white flowers upon the base with a gentleness that seemed entirely at odds with his towering frame. He bowed his head, sinking into silence.

"You lost someone too?" Caelan asked, standing up and brushing the dirt from his knees.

The stranger remained motionless.

Caelan waited. Nothing. He frowned, stepping closer. "I asked you a question."

Still, the man did not speak. He stood slowly, his back to Caelan, staring at the nameless grave.

Caelan sighed, crossing his arms over his chest. "Not much for words, are you?"

The man didn't deny it. He simply stood motionless before the stone, his back to Caelan.

Caelan turned his gaze back to Lucien's name, his shoulders tense. "At least whomever you're mourning is at rest," he murmured, his voice dropping into a quiet, bitter hum. "They don't have to watch their home be bartered away."

He stared at the cool marble, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides.

"They call this treaty a triumph," Caelan muttered, the anger he had been bottling up finally bleeding through his words. "A grand peace. But it's just a trade... and I'm the blood being sold to the man who slaughtered my people."

He let out a cold, breathy scoff. "They expect me to kneel to their Wolf Prince. To be a dutiful little prize." His jaw tightened, a hard, dangerous quiet settling over his tone. "I'll go with them. But I will never belong to him."

The stranger finally turned his head.

Under the shadow of his hood, two storm-gray eyes met Caelan's…

His face was sharp, carved from hard angles, his expression unreadable. Cold. Calm.

For a fleeting, inexplicable second, Caelan felt as though those gray eyes understood the crushing weight in his chest far better than anyone else in the palace ever could.

Then, the moment broke.

The stranger inclined his head in a brief, silent farewell, turning toward the perimeter hedges.

"Wait," Caelan called out, taking a step forward. "At least tell me your name."

The man didn't hesitate or look back. He simply vanished around the turn of the stone path, his quiet footsteps melting into the whisper of the leaves.

Caelan stared after him, blinking. "Rude," he muttered to the empty air. He sighed, shaking his head. "Or perhaps you're mute. I suppose I'll never know."

Night fell over Castle Aster like an iron curtain.

Moonlight spilled through the arched windows of Caelan’s bedchamber, painting cold silver patterns across the rugs.

A faint, frantic knock rattled the door.

"Come in," Caelan said quietly.

The heavy door opened just wide enough for Princess Lyra to slip inside. She wore no jewelry, no royal gown. Clad in dark leather riding clothes, she carried a thick satchel slung across her chest.

"You locked the outer latch?" Caelan asked.

"So no one sees me," she whispered.

She stepped over and set the satchel down on his writing desk. It landed with a heavy, metallic thud.

Caelan unbuckled the leather flap. Inside lay a set of coarse wool traveling garments, a pouch heavy with silver coin, two full waterskins, and a folded map of the southern coast.

He slowly looked up at her. "Lyra... what is this?"

"I've arranged everything," she said, her voice trembling despite her fierce expression. "The western gate changes rotation an hour before dawn. The guard commander owes me a favor, he’ll turn his back. I have two fresh horses hidden in the lower woods." She reached out, grabbing both of his hands, her palms cold and damp. "We leave tonight, I heard he's coming tomorrow Caelan."

"Lyra—"

"Come with me!" she begged, tears spilling over her lashes. "We can disappear. We’ll cross the sea to the Free Isles. No crowns. No treaties. No wolf princes. They’ll never find us!"

For one terrible, magnificent second... Caelan let himself imagine it.

A life where he was just a man. A life where he could wake up to the smell of salt water, free from the crushing weight of duty, lineage, and war.

Then, the illusion crumbled beneath the reality he had accepted in the garden.

"If I run..." Caelan whispered, his chest aching as he squeezed her hands. "...thousands will die, Lyra."

Lyra closed her eyes, a shuddering sob escaping her lips. "I know."

"The armies turn back toward our borders. The burning starts again."

She couldn't answer him. She knew the arithmetic of their world as well as he did.

"I cannot save my own skin by burning down the kingdom, Lyra," Caelan said softly, pulling her closer until her forehead rested against his shoulder.

"I hate you," she wept into his tunic, her fingers clutching his back. "I hate you for being so good."

Caelan offered a sad, broken smile. "I know."

They held each other in the quiet, dim room, clinging to the last moments of the life they had known together.

The heavy, iron-bound doors of the council chamber slammed shut behind Caelan. The sound echoed through the high stone corridor like the solemn toll of an executioner's bell.Servants scattered from his path, bowing hastily as he stormed through the polished halls. None dared speak. They recognized the haunted look in his eyes, It was the look of a life torn away. Silence settled over the council chamber. It was not the serene hush that follows good news, nor the quiet reverence of a victory won. It was the suffocating, motionless air that precedes an execution.Prince Caelan stood frozen in the center of the grand hall, every pair of eyes fixed on him. The brief spark of hope he had felt moments ago evaporated, leaving only a cold knot of dread that tightened violently in his chest."What did we trade for it?" he repeated, his voice cutting through the stillness.King Rowan closed his eyes for a long, agonizing moment, as though searching for a strength he no longer possessed."The treaty demanded a guarantee," the King said quietly. The palace had forgotten how to celebrate. For twenty years, the vaulted halls of Castle Aster had echoed only with the heavy tread of iron-shod boots, the murmurs of desperate prayers, and the distant, hollow tolling of mourning bells. High above, portraits of dead kings stared down from their gilded frames. Their painted smiles felt like a mockery, a cruel reminder of an era of prosperity that felt more like a myth than memory.Prince Caelan had grown up in a kingdom that bled. He did not know what peace sounded like.Standing beneath the high arched windows of the royal library, he watched the palace gardens sway softly in the morning breeze. Summer had arrived in defiance of the war, splashing the terraces with vibrant gold and violet. But past the castle walls, past the manicured hedges, the northern horizon was stained with a sickly, rising haze.Another village burned.Caelan’s fingers tightened around the heavy parchment in his hand.Another casualty report.More names.
