Chapter 13: Paid in Full

The Pit always comes alive at night. By 8 PM, Roman’s bar is packed. Music shakes the old ceiling pipes, mixing with the thud of darts hitting cork and billiard balls clacking on faded green felt.

It’s normal here. And in this place, “normal” means a fight is about to break out.

I was wiping the counter when Roman’s cousin, Mason, slid a basket of fries through the kitchen gap.

“Table six,” he shouted.

“I know where table six is, Mase.”

“You forgot it twice yesterday.”

“I was distracted.”

Mason smirked. “Distracted by that tall blonde?”

I grabbed the fries and elbowed him hard. “Keep talking, and I’ll tell Roman you burnt the onion rings.”

“I did burn them,” he grinned.

“I know.”

At the bar’s end, Roman dried a glass with an ancient rag. His thick beard masked his expression, but his eyes narrowed at the door.

The mood in the room shifted. Conversations stopped. A billiard ball rolled slowly across a table, untouched.

The front door opened. Six men in black suits walked in. Every head turned.

The whispers started: “Lycans? What are they doing here?” “That’s Beckett Nexus Security.” “Damn…”

Nobody reached for a weapon. No one wanted to be the one to start a war.

Then, Xavier Beckett walked in.

He looked like a wolf in a church. In his tailored grey suit and silver watch, he towered over The Pit, his expensive shoes contrasting sharply with the dusty floor.

Roman draped his towel over his shoulder. “Do you know him?” he asked quietly.

I didn’t look up. “Unfortunately, yes.”

“Want me to kick him out?”

I thought about it. “Only if he breaks something.”

Roman snorted. “I could throw him out anytime.”

“I know.”

Xavier ignored everyone. His eyes went straight to me.

I finished pouring a beer and walked over. “What can I get you?”

He looked at my faded band t-shirt and black jeans under my apron. “Do you have another job?”

“I have bills to pay.”

“I didn’t imagine you here.”

“And I didn’t imagine you near cheap beer.”

Behind him, people were whispering: “Is that really Beckett?”

“Why is he talking to Raven?”

“Don’t Purebloods hate this place?”

A waiter nudged me. “Raven, table four wants another pitcher.”

“I’ve got it.”

I didn’t even wait for Xavier to answer before I walked off. He just stood there watching me do my thing—taking orders, joking around with a regular who’s always moody, and bickering with Roman over who had to clean the beer taps. I wasn’t pretending. This was just my actual life.

“You smile here,” Xavier said. He was still sitting exactly where I had left him.

“What?”

“You’re smiling.”

“So what?”

“I’ve never seen you smile.”

“Maybe you weren’t looking closely enough.”

That hit home. His expression shifted slightly, as if I’d said something he couldn’t argue with.

Before he could respond, a large rogue named Finn wrapped an arm around my shoulder. “Here she is! My favorite bartender!”

I pushed him off. “You still owe me thirty dollars.”

“I almost died last week!”

“You almost die every week, Finn.”

The bar erupted in laughter. Xavier didn’t laugh. He just watched Finn’s hand leave my shoulder.

“You deserve better than this.”

Everything went quiet. I just looked at him and smiled—not because he was being nice, but because he’d just totally messed up.

I hopped up onto the foot rail behind the bar and grabbed a beer bottle.

“Listen up, everyone!” I yelled.

The music was still going, but the chatting stopped. I pointed the bottle right at Xavier.

“This Lycan guy just told me,” I paused for a second, “that I’m too good for all of you.”

Finn slammed his hands on the table. “Oi! Does that include the thirty bucks you owe me, Raven?”

“It definitely does!” someone shouted. Even Roman started laughing.

I leaned back against the counter. “You heard him. Apparently, I’m way too fancy for this place.”

The regulars loved it. Some old rogue stood up with his beer. “After everything we’ve been through?!”

Another person gasped, “I thought we were family!”

Everyone started laughing. Someone yelled at Xavier to buy me a mansion, and another guy joked that I’d still be back for happy hour.

Xavier just stood there while everyone mocked him. His bodyguards looked like they wanted to just drag him out of there.

I jumped back behind the counter. “Sorry,” I said, acting sweet. “The Pit votes. Democracy, right?”

For the first time all night, Xavier actually had nothing to say. Then he gave a little smile.

“You’ve become dangerous,” he said.

I started polishing a glass. “Nope.”

He looked at me for one last second. “I’ll see you again, Ravenna.”

“Don’t count on it.”

He smirked. “We’ll see.”

Then he turned and walked out. His six bodyguards followed him, and the heavy door swung shut.

The bar slowly went back to normal. Someone cursed because they missed a pool shot. Glasses clinked. The jukebox filled the silence like nothing had even happened.

Brie walked over, shaking her head. “…That guy gives me the creeps.”

“Join the club.”

My phone buzzed on the counter. I barely glanced at the notification.

Payment Confirmed.

I opened the receipt. There was no sender, no company, no note. Just one line at the bottom: Paid anonymously.

My smile disappeared. This didn’t feel like a gift—it felt like a debt I never signed up for.

Xavier lingered a few feet behind, watching with the patience of someone who had already won. Our bond pulsed like a second heartbeat.Get out. Now. He’s poison. My hand slipped from the handle, and Xavier watched with a small, dark smile.“Don’t you want to hear the revised terms first?” he repeated, quieter this time.I let go of the handle. The soft click of it resetting sounded too loud in the study.“I’ll hear them,” I said. “But you’re going to listen first.”I closed the gap in three steps, fisting his open shirt and yanking him down. He didn’t resist. I kissed him the way I’d wanted since the rooftop, biting his lower lip hard enough to make him hiss, then soothing it with my tongue before biting again.Xavier made a low sound in his chest that was almost a growl. His hands landed on my waist, fingers digging in, but he didn’t take over. He let me push him backward until the backs of his thighs hit the desk.I broke the kiss just long enough to speak against his mouth.“You w

I wanted to throw the plate at his head. He’s trying to soften you. Don’t, Ciel whispered in my head.I stabbed a potato harder than necessary. I know.Xavier didn’t make small talk. He didn’t ask how the food was or pretend to be polite. He just sat there in an open-collar shirt, his violet eyes cataloging my every move. The silence grew heavy between us.When I finally set my fork down, the sound felt too loud.He stood up. “Come with me.”I leaned back. “I’m full. We can talk here.”“No,” he said, already walking away. “We can’t.”I waited three seconds out of principle before pushing back my chair and following him. The hallway was expensive and silent. Mrs. Gable was nowhere to be seen; she was a smart woman.Xavier opened a heavy door and stepped aside. He didn’t move far enough to let me pass without our shoulders brushing. The room was grand: dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, and a desk large enough to sign treaties on. One wall was lined with pristine

(Xavier POV) Mrs. Gable didn’t bother knocking. She’d been his housekeeper since his parents passed, the only one who remembered him as a grieving little boy before he grew into the man everyone now called the “Tyrant Lycan.” She set a pot of black coffee on the counter. “You’re up earlier than usual, sir.” “I didn’t sleep,” Xavier replied. “I noticed.” She poured his coffee and spoke plainly. “The clinic delivery went through. The staff signed for everything, and Miss Holloway was informed within the hour.” Xavier didn’t turn around. “And?” “She left a diner in The Pit shortly after.” That caught his attention. Mrs. Gable studied him. “Theuly said, she looked angry.” “She usually does,” Xavier said. “Thoughtful, too,” she added after a pause. “The dangerous kind.” Xavier finally turned. Mrs. Gable folded her hands. “The kind of thoughtful that usually ends with someone losing money or blood.” A small smile touched the corner of his mouth. “Then she hasn’t changed much.”

Three regulars at the counter turned around. One of them, a scarred rogue with a permanent scowl, muttered, “Fucking omega,” under his breath like it explained everything.I looked up slowly. “Say it louder. I dare you.”Silence fell like a dead weight. Raven didn’t serve loudmouths, and Roman enforced that rule with a baseball bat.The muttering stopped; forks scraped as patrons suddenly found their fries fascinating.Matias snorted. “You’re scaring the livestock.”“Good.” I stabbed the burger one more time. The patty finally gave up and split in half. “They should be scared. I’m in a mood.”“No shit.” He leaned back, arms stretched across the booth—the same ones that had pinned me to alley walls and cheap mattresses countless times. We used to fuck like a competitive sport: loud, messy, and detached. Then we just stopped. Staying friends was the weirdest upgrade of my life.He tilted his head. “So. The golden boy offered you the world on a silver platter, and you told him to fuck of

I never thought I’d return to this world.Yet here I was, standing before Xavier Beckett, holding a black business card that felt heavy in my fingers.“You gave me this,” I said flatly.“I did.”“So I came.” I tossed the card onto his desk. “Congrats. Your marketing strategy worked.”Xavier didn’t blink. “I never waste an invitation.”“No,” I replied. “You just waste everyone’s time.”A small, cold smile touched his lips. “I’ve been called worse.”He walked toward me slowly, closing the gap until he stood just inches away. The scent of cedar and expensive tobacco wrapped around me. His presence was dominant and suffocating.“You said you came to prove something,” he said, voice low.“Yes.”“You’ve proven it.”He opened a thick black folder and slid a document across the desk. It stopped in front of my fingertips.CONFIDENTIAL AGREEMENTBase salary. Luxury residence. Unlimited monthly allowance. Elite medical coverage. I spent twelve minutes choosing this outfit—not to look pretty for Xavier Beckett, but to show him who I had become. In my burgundy halter, denim skirt, and boots, I looked comfortable and confident; if he expected the shy nineteen-year-old he left behind, he was in for a surprise.Beckett Holdings screamed wealth with its marble and gold. As I walked in, the executives ignored me and the assistants whispered, their stares fueled by the fact that I clearly didn’t belong. The receptionist was a polished blonde in a perfectly tailored cream suit. She gave me the kind of smile people use right before they kick you out.“Good morning,” she said.“I need to see Xavier Beckett.”“Do you have an appointment?” she asked, her fingers folded on the desk.“He invited me.”
