Jace sighed and leaned closer, his voice lowering even more. “He’s already halfway there, El. You should’ve seen the way he looked at you. Like he was trying to piece together a puzzle he didn’t know he was already part of.”

Elena’s brow creased faintly. “He shouldn’t be.”

“But he is,” Jace pressed, frustration and care lacing his tone. “You saved his life. You think a man like him won’t dig? He’s too used to control to let this go. You’ll either tell him the truth or he’ll find it himself. And if he finds it, it won’t end pretty.”

Her fingers twitched against the bedsheet, and for a moment, she was silent.

Jace waited, watching her chest rise and fall, until her voice finally came out, quiet but sharp. “You think I don’t know that? You think I don’t know what happens when men like him feel betrayed?”

“I’m not saying he’ll hurt you,” Jace said quickly. “But the kind of power Roman has, he doesn’t forgive easily. If he finds out you were the one who took the Harrow contract…”

“Stop.”

Her diamond earrings swayed as she moved in front of him, hands cupping his face briefly before smacking his shoulder in controlled fury. “You could’ve called! You could’ve...”“I was unconscious, Mother.”She faltered for half a second. Then her tone hardened again. “And now you’re awake, and this is the first time we’ve heard from you. I had to call the Minister myself to confirm you weren’t in a morgue!”Roman sighed, rubbing his temple. “I’m fine,” he repeated, quieter this time. “Elena too.”But that last part went right over their heads.Lucien’s brow furrowed as he looked around the hall, noting the guards, the tightened security, the hush in the air. “Who did this? Who dared?”His voice thundered through the corridor. “Was it Dante again? Or one of the Vargo dogs?”Roman didn’t answer right away, his jaw tightening.“Tell me,” Lucien pressed, “because if someone thinks they can strike at my family and live, they’re sorely mistaken.”Clarissa reached for Roman’s arm again, her

  • The Ultimatum Wife   Chapter 80

Jace had seen Elena in a hundred different lights before, laughing, scheming, furious, pretending to be unbothered when she was seconds away from breaking, but he had never seen her like this. The sterile white of the Thorne estate’s private medical wing made her look ghostly, fragile in a way that didn’t belong to her. Bandages wrapped her ribs and forearm, the faint bruising on her neck a dark reminder of the chaos from the night before. The monitor beside her beeped softly, the only sound in the quiet room.Jace froze in the doorway, unable to move for a long moment. His throat tightened so fast it hurt.God… she looked like she’d been through hell.He stepped closer, his hands trembling as he tried not to make a sound. “El…” he whispered under his breath, afraid that saying her name too loud might somehow hurt her.He pulled a chair close, sitting down slowly, eyes drinking her in. His heart hammered unevenly as memories crashed in, her laugh, her sharp comebacks, the way she al

Roman found Jace exactly where he had left him, standing stiffly near the grand staircase, surrounded by two of his guards who watched him like hawks. The kid hadn’t moved much since Roman had gone upstairs, he looked pale, restless, like a man waiting for judgment. The hush in the foyer was heavy, the morning light spilling through the tall windows but doing nothing to soften the atmosphere. Roman walked down the last few steps, his movements precise, controlled, the kind of calm that hid the remnants of chaos behind his eyes.“Roman,” Jace started, voice breaking halfway through. “Is she...?”“She’s alive,” Roman said simply. His tone was clipped, but it carried weight, like the relief he refused to show. “She’s in the medical ward. Doctor Harrow is monitoring her vitals. You can go see her if you want.”For a heartbeat, Jace just froze. Then his shoulders slumped, and the breath he’d been holding escaped in a quiet rush. “Thank God,” he whispered, eyes glimmering before he quickl

Roman didn’t know what exactly had pulled him there. Maybe it was instinct. Maybe guilt. Maybe something more dangerous, something he didn’t dare name. The corridor to the estate’s medical wing was still, the kind of still that pressed on the ribs and made breathing sound too loud. His steps were silent against the marble, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his expression carved into that same unreadable stone mask he always wore. But inside, his thoughts wouldn’t stop.Jace’s words had been a poison, slow, quiet, but spreading fast.“She’s not hiding to hurt you. She’s hiding to protect you.”Ridiculous.He didn’t need protecting. Especially not from a woman who had turned his life inside out.And yet… here he was.The door to her room was half open, the soft hum of machines and faint scent of antiseptic spilling into the hall.Roman paused at the threshold, staring at the sliver of her reflection in the glass panel, the curve of her cheek, the faint rise and fall of her chest,

Jace’s breath came short. “I didn’t.. I shouldn’t have said anything...”“No,” Roman said, straightening. “You shouldn’t have. But you did.”He took a slow step around the desk, closing the distance until Jace could feel the weight of his presence right in front of him.Roman’s voice was almost a whisper now, laced with steel.“You came here screaming about Elena, and yet you drop Dante and Vargo like a man who’s been living in their shadow. So tell me, Jace Morrison… what exactly are you to my wife?”Jace looked up, heart pounding, panic threading through every nerve. “I told you. I’m her friend.”Roman studied him for a beat, the trembling in his jaw, the nervous shift in his eyes. Then, finally, he spoke.“I don’t believe you.”The room felt too small, the air too heavy.Jace wanted to say something, anything, but before he could, Roman turned toward his guards and said quietly,“Keep him inside the estate. I’ll decide what to do with him after I talk to Elena.”Jace’s eyes widened
