Roman leaned back, the faintest flicker of amusement breaking through his guarded expression. “You don’t sound surprised.”

“I’m not.” She turned her head slightly toward the window, wincing as she did. “My father fakes concern the way some people fake smiles. It’s good PR for him to have a wounded daughter married to the Thornes. He’ll milk it for sympathy and business leverage before I’ve even healed.”

Her tone was bitter, not emotional, just laced with weary realism.

Roman studied her quietly. “You’re not going to call them back?”

“Not yet.” Her gaze slid back to him, sharp but tired. “If I open my eyes now, they’ll turn this whole place into a stage. I’m not ready for any drama, Roman. Not with my ribs screaming and a dozen lies already floating in the air.”

Roman exhaled slowly, his jaw tightening. “You shouldn’t have to fake unconsciousness just to get peace.”

She gave a faint, humorless laugh. “Roman, I’ve been faking peace my whole life.”

He didn’t respond right away, just watc

Elena’s face heated instantly, but she forced herself into her default, nonchalant, blank, emotionless.Roman, on the other hand, went rigid in annoyance.“Hale,” he said slowly, voice dangerously controlled, “what have I told you about entering rooms uninvited?”Hale swallowed hard. “T.. that you’d fire me.”“Correct.”“And possibly break my jaw.”“Also correct.”Hale nodded rapidly, keeping his gaze fixed on the wall because making eye contact would probably kill him. “Understood. Very understood. Won’t happen again.”Elena pinched Roman’s arm lightly.“Roman, stop intimidating your men.”“He barged into our room,” Roman hissed.“It’s the medical wing,” she defended. “Everyone barges in.”Roman glared at the wall Hale was staring at.Hale coughed again, still red. “Should I.... um... give you two a moment? Or ten? Or... I can leave the country. That also works.”Elena snorted.Roman didn’t.“You’re already here,” Roman said stiffly. “Spit out what you came for.”Hale winced. “Right.

“Jace's not a threat.”“I didn’t say he was a threat,” he replied quietly. “I said I don’t trust him fully. There’s a difference.”“I trust him,” she said simply.Roman’s eyes sharpened at that, just a flicker, but he masked it with a slow exhale. “I’m aware.”“And if you don’t want me stressed…” she continued, sitting up straighter, the shift of her body catching his attention even when he tried not to show it, “then maybe you should team up with him.”Roman froze mid breath. “Excuse me?”“You heard me.” Elena’s tone turned taunting, soft but cutting. “If you want to track Vargo, Dante, or whoever else is out for your head, then training wheels won’t cut it. Use someone effective.”Roman stared, insult creeping into the edges of his composure. “Training wheels?”“Yes.” Elena nodded with a deadpan seriousness that absolutely wasn’t serious. “Because, let’s be honest…”She tipped her head, examining her husband like she was rating him on some invisible scoreboard.“…even at the very be

Roman’s thumb brushed her shoulder absently, almost like he didn’t realize he was touching her while his mind spun. Elena was quiet now, resting against him, but he could feel, literally feel how tense her breathing was. He could feel her heartbeat. And it wasn’t calm at all.He swallowed hard and finally spoke. “Elena… about my rules.”She stiffened slightly, and he felt it.Roman exhaled slowly. “I was a jerk.”Her head tilted up just enough for him to see the faint smirk she tried to hide.“Just now figuring that out, Thorne?”He huffed a dry laugh, but he didn’t let the moment slide.“No,” he murmured. “I’ve known. But I didn’t want to admit it.”She rolled her eyes dramatically. “Go on. This apology better be good.”Roman ignored the sarcasm, even though he felt it tug at the corner of his mouth.“I hated that you didn’t care about me,” he admitted. “I hated that you weren’t scared of me. That you didn’t try to impress me. That you weren’t like everyone else who kissed the grou

Elena didn’t know when the need hit her, only that it was sudden, sharp, and terrifyingly real.Roman kissed her again, slower this time, as if giving her room to change her mind. But she didn’t.She leaned in, fingers curling around his jaw, pulling him deeper. He felt it, her wanting. Her unguarded softness. Her surrender. And Roman, who had been holding himself back for days, finally broke.“Elena…” His voice was low, rough, almost a warning. She whispered back, breathless, “Don’t make me say it twice.”That was all it took.Roman’s restraint snapped. He guided her gently, carefully, toward the bed, his hands steady even though his body shook with the effort not to rush. Elena didn’t step away. Didn’t tease. Didn’t run.She followed his pull like she belonged there. When he reached for his shirt, she helped him, fingers brushing his skin, tentative at first, then bolder. His eyes darkened instantly. He watched her like she was something sacred and dangerous all at once.“Elena,”

“…The entire internet is blowing up,” he finally said, voice dropping. “Someone leaked Harrow’s crimes. All of them. With evidence.”Elena’s eyes widened, and for the first time in a while, she looked genuinely shocked.“That wasn’t me.”“I know,” he muttered under his breath before he could stop himself.Because now his brain was catching up.There was only one other person who had the skill. One person who was furious. One person with motive. One person with the emotional connection.Jace.Roman exhaled sharply. But Elena didn’t know yet.She merely stared at him, processing everything, confusion shifting into suspicion.“…So someone defended me?” she asked quietly.Roman swallowed.“Yes.”“And you thought it was me.”He closed his eyes.“…Yes.”Elena leaned back against the pillow, expression unreadable.Outside, the storm raged.Neither spoke.Roman’s heartbeat was a riot.Elena’s mind was a mess. And between them hung the truth neither of them knew how to touch.Elena sat there,

Jace posts the final blow.He hesitated before the last upload. This one… This one could start a war if anyone suspected it came from him or Elena. It was the reason she accepted the contract.A girl. Sixteen.Found dead two years ago.Case dismissed as “suicide.”The file showed Harrow’s involvement, and the threats he sent the girl’s grieving brother.Jace clenched his jaw.“She deserved justice. Elena did it for her.”He leaked it.And the internet exploded. THE WORLD TURNS. Every news outlet that had mourned the councilman began backtracking.Every reporter who had called Elena a monster… fell silent.People started demanding:“Why wasn’t this investigated?”“Why was Harrow protected?”“Who covered this up?”Jace watched the chaos unfold, heart pounding. He didn’t expose Elena. He didn’t expose himself. But he exposed the monster that everyone had painted as a saint. He leaned back, chest tight.“Let the world burn,” he whispered. “But not her. Never her.”Finally, people were st
