Who the hell starts a ball at midnight?

He was currently in Vincent's dark room getting dressed for the ball the seneschal had said would start by midnight.

On his way to his mate's room through the large castle, yes castle; his mate lived in a regal fortress made of rare stones and rocks. Anyway, he had been tugged along gently (orders from a particular somebody) from his basement cell to the floor of the soldiers and past a mess hall that was too clean and flamboyant to be a mess hall. The guards tugged him past another two floors before they reached a hall that had a red carpet, a signal that he was on the terrain of the royals.

The halls were dimly lit by fires encased in bronze cast lanterns, and knight statues while paintings and engravings in an unknown language organized the walls.
