The flickering numbers on his Bloomberg screen blurred together....Alexander Sterling's eyes were fixed on the rain hitting the windows of his office 70 stories up in Manhattan. A huge deal worth three billion dollars was waiting for his decision, one that would change industries. Usually moments like these got him pumped up with the thrill of being in control of a rush, todayjust felt Off.

His assistant, Marcus Thorne, a man who was loyal and discreet came in without knocking, looking serious. "Sir, I've got some news."

Alexander didn't even look up. "Another market dip?. Has Senator Hayes finally agreed to work with us?"

"No, sir... It's about James, James Maxwell."

Alexander's jaw clenched, James his longtime lawyer, friend and back in the day a buddy. He had known James was dealing with something, James had always been private. "How bad?"

"He's gone Alexander...Heart attack, Suddenly." Marcus hesitated, added, "His memorial service is Friday and the reading of the will is on Saturday morning."

A cold feeling formed in Alexander's stomach. James had been more than a lawyer; he was a link to a past Alexander rarely thought about, a past that included Eleanor...a past Alexander had ruthlessly cut out of his life five years ago.

"Get a jet ready " Alexander ordered, his voice cold. "Clear my schedule for Friday and Saturday."

The funeral was a blur of suits and quiet whispers, Alexander stood still a rock among the crying mourners, he recognized a face from his earlier days before the Sterling Group became a global giant, before he got rid of anything or anyone he thought it wasn't essential to his rise. He saw James's elderly mom, her face lined with sadness and offered a formal apology. No one dared approach him for more than a hello, he was Alexander Sterling, the titan, alone and untouchable.

He scanned the room with curiosity guiding his eyes, she wasn’t there...Eleanor Of course not, why would she be? Their breakup had been bitter, his words cutting deep, her departure swift and silent. He’d told himself he’d made the choice to cut out the dead weight to boost his climb,he was at the top now alone.

On Saturday morning the air in James Maxwell's office was thick with the smell of old paper and grief. A few distant relatives, a godson and Alexander were there, James’s junior partner, a man named Mr. Harrison cleared his throat and started reading.

The usual stuff, Gifts to family, charities, his school.... Alexander zoned out his mind already drifting back to the deal then a name jolted him upright.

"...to the trust set up for Leo Sterling " Mr. Harrison said, his voice echoing in the silence. "A sum of ten million USD to be held until his eighteenth birthday, with his guardian, Eleanor Vance having access for his welfare and education."

Alexander's blood ran cold.. Leo Sterling? Eleanor Vance? The names crashed together in his mind sparking an alarm he hadn't felt in years, he leaned forward, his eyes fixed on Mr. Harrison. "Excuse me?" he cut in his voice low and menacing. "Could you repeat that part?"

Harrison, startled, fumbled with the papers. "Yes Mr. Sterling...'To the trust set up for Leo Sterling...' The will also states, '.... To avoid any confusion it is hereby explicitly declared that Alexander Sterling is the biological father of the said Leo Sterling.'"

The words hit Alexander like a punch, the room spun.. Biological father? Leo Sterling? Eleanor? It was impossible, a trick, A cruel joke... He hadn't seen Eleanor since the day he handed her the divorce papers, He had been so careful, So ruthless, He already had her out of his life out of his mind, there was no child, There couldn't be.

His gaze swept the faces around the room searching for an explanation, a denial, anything but the stunned silence reflecting his shock. He saw a flicker of knowing pity in James's moms eyes, a confirmation that made his stomach clench. Five years ago he had told Eleanor was a burden, not a benefit...Five years ago he’d cast her aside convinced she was holding him back.. All that time she’d carried his secret, his child.

Rage warred with a dawning realization, this wasn't about money or a hidden child, this was about everything he thought he knew, everything he thought he controlled shattering in an instant. He had built a solitary life free of emotional entanglements free of vulnerability.. Now a five-year-old boy, a complete stranger bore his name ,His legacy.

He pushed back his chair, the screech echoing loud. He had to find her. He had to know. The cold logical part of his brain was already demanding answers. The primitive primal part was roaring a question: What have I done?

He stormed out leaving the gathering behind his mind a tempest. Eleanor.. She had done this. Kept this from him.. Somewhere out there was his son. A son he hadn’t known existed. A son he had abandoned before he even drew his breath. He reached for his phone, his knuckles white. There was one number he needed to dial. The woman he had carelessly discarded the woman who now held the key to a part of him he never knew existed.

The journal was sitting between Alexander and Eleanor like a bomb waiting to go off. Alexander was furious. You could feel the anger building up inside him. Eleanor was scared. She was not scared of Alexander. She was scared of what James had done. James was Eleanor's friend, the person she talked to when she was going through a time. He was the one who knew all her secrets.. Now it seemed like James had been playing a game with them. He had been keeping secrets from them. "The key " Alexander said, his voice low and angry. "What is the double key, Eleanor? What did James not tell us?" Eleanor tried to remember. She thought about the deposit box she and Alexander had opened when they were married. They had put their papers in it like their wedding certificate and the deed to their apartment. She had not thought about it in years. "It was a bank box, Alexander, " she said. "We used it to store our papers. I have not thought about it since we got divorced." Alexander had not emptie

  • The Unexpected Heir   CHAPTER 6

Eleanor's fingers shook as she touched the leather of the journal. The name "The Ledger of Truths" made her feel a chill run down her spine. James Maxwell was a man who kept secrets and was very smart. What secrets could he have told Alexander of all people?. Why did he do it now?She asked in a quiet voice "What is this?" and pulled the journal closer to her. It felt heavy like it had a lot of stories to tell that nobody knew about.Alexander watched her. She could not tell what he was thinking. He said, "James left instructions that were very clear. He said to give this to you and only you, if I ever talked about Leo. He said it would explain everything."Eleanor felt a little scared. Asked, "Explain what?"Alexander just shook his head. "He did not say. He only said it had something that you both needed to know." He looked at her with a face. "I have not looked inside. James said it was for you to see first.. Knowing James it is not something small."Eleanor opened the journal and

  • The Unexpected Heir   CHAPTER 5

Eleanor watched Alexander walk away, his shoulders disappearing down the hallway leaving behind a really empty feeling in the boardroom. He said "Try me" and those words kept playing in her mind. They were really scary. Her hands were shaking. Alexander was not just confident he was also really scary because he just would not give up. He really believed he had the right to go to Leo's birthday party to become a part of the world she had built, a world that was free from his bad influence. She went back to her office feeling really confused because the good feeling she had from her presentation was overshadowed by what Alexander said. Her partner and closest friend Sarah met her at the door looking really worried. "What happened there Eleanor? You looked like you had seen a ghost when you walked out."Eleanor sat down in her chair covering her face with her hands. "It was worse than a ghost, Sarah. Alexander. He is on the board of the foundation. He was the one who was evaluating my pr

  • The Unexpected Heir   CHAPTER 4

Eleanor's composure, a built shield made from past betrayals threatened to crack. Alexander Sterling was here on the board of his foundation funding her project. It was unbelievable. Her mind was racing, a mix of duty and raw personal anger. This was more than a professional review; it was a personal attack.A moment of silence passed, like a string. The other board members shifted, feeling the change in the room's atmosphere. Eleanor put on a forced smile, a mask. " Afternoon gentlemen " she started, her voice steady even though her hands were shaking. She deliberately avoided Alexander's gaze, focusing on the lead trustee instead. "My apologies for the delay. We are Vance Designs. We are excited to present our proposal for the 'Phoenix Rising' Urban Revitalization Project."Alexander watched her every nerve on alert. She was stunning. Not in a glamorous way but with a smart intelligence that shone through her. The way she explained her vision, her passion for design and community in

The sound of his car door slamming shut was the thing that made Alexander feel a little better. He was still thinking about Eleanor Vance. She had really stood up to him. That did not happen very often. People usually did what he said especially after he had made it hard for them to work in their field.. Eleanor was different. She had looked him in the eye and told him what she thought.Alexander was angry. Deep down he was also feeling a little helpless. He had tried to make himself feel better on the drive home to his apartment in Manhattan. He told himself that Eleanor was just being emotional because she was a mother.. Her words had really gotten to him. She had said that his world was loveless and that she needed to protect their son from him. Those words had hurt him more than he wanted to admit. When he got home his assistant Marcus was waiting for him with some papers. "I found out some things about Vance Designs, " Marcus said. "It's a company but they do great work. They car

  • The Unexpected Heir   CHAPTER 2

Alexander Sterling's phone rang, once twice the sound was so annoying to him. It was a voicemail from Eleanor Vance's office. A calm lady told him that Eleanor Vance was not available to talk. Alexander slammed the phone down on the leather seat. The driver jumped a little. He did not like it when people were not available to talk to him.He called Marcus. Said "I need Eleanor Vance's address, her office, her home, everything now."A minute later Alexander got a text with Eleanor Vance's address. It was a Brooklyn brownstone, not some building in Manhattan. Alexander decided to go himself without his security team. He wanted to talk to Eleanor Vance in person. The car took him to the brownstone and Alexander went inside. The building was nice and warm, not like his office. There was a sign that said "Vance Designs" on it. Alexander opened the door. I went in.The room was full of energy with models and blueprints. A young lady at the desk looked up surprised to see Alexander."I want
