Chapter 2

Author: Mizuki Sei
‘No wonder Stefan wanted me out by tonight. He had another woman he wanted to play house with! Hah, to think that I let that man affect my emotions! How I wish I could slap my past self!’

Briar approached Renee with a cocky smirk.

“So you’re Renee Everheart, huh? What are you still doing here? Didn’t Stefan kick you out? Get a move on! Have you no shame?!”

Despite the provocation, Renee continued packing her belongings at her own pace.

“Hey, are you deaf? I’m talking to you here!”

“Sorry, I didn’t quite hear you.” Renee met her gaze calmly.

“All I heard was some crazy bitch barking!”

“How dare you call me a bitch?!”

“I didn’t. Looks like you went ahead and got offended in the first place.” Renee replied as she got up with her luggage. She tilted her head at Briar, who was blocking her path.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me. Nice little doggies should know how to stay out of the way.”

“How dare you!” Briar’s face went bright red as she stomped her feet.

‘Wasn’t she known to be a living punchbag? When did she learn to talk back like that?’

The housekeeper quickly tried to calm Briar with flattery.

“Please calm down, Ms. Desrosiers. You shouldn’t upset yourself over a woman like that!”

“You’ll be the lady of the house soon. That insolent witch is insignificant compared to you…”

“We’ve also arranged a room for you per Master Hunt’s orders. Let me lead the way!”

Briar looked visibly pleased by the flattery. She quickly lost the mood to argue with Renee and proceeded to follow the housekeeper into the villa.

Renee was once again left alone outside. Mixed emotions welled up in her chest as she gazed upon the tall building. It felt ironic that she would return to the streets after four years of living here.

“Goodbye, Stefan.” Renee took a deep breath and left.

Later on, she moved into a small one-bedroom apartment downtown.

She felt liberated as soon as she lost her title as the missus of the Hunt family. She was free to do anything she wanted, and she was no longer the caged bird she used to be.

Renee took her phone out and dialed a number she blocked for four years.

“Boss, you’ve finally remembered that I exist! It’s been four years, you know!” A delighted voice exclaimed on the other end of the line.

This person was none other than Liam Osborne, also known as one of the Four Princes of Beach City. Despite his rebellious and unpredictable nature, he made himself sound like an underling when speaking to Renee.

“I heard about your divorce, by the way. Congratulations! You should've ditched that asshole a long time ago! I’m not sure if you know this, but while you were being Mrs. Punchbag, rumors about you started spreading everywhere! If those old geezers knew that you’re actually the ultimate boss they were looking for all this while, they’d flip their shit! So? Are we doing something big this time? I can…”

“Hold that thought!” Renee was so annoyed by his constant blabbering that she considered blocking him again.

“I promised Grandpa that I won’t go back to that life anymore. If you really do see me as your boss, you better keep this a secret.”

It appears that her past was rather ‘interesting’. However, she wasn’t in the mood to talk about it.

“I called because I want you to help investigate something…”

After talking some more with Liam, Renee hung up the phone, only to receive a text message from Stefan.

Her heart started racing as she tapped her phone screen ever so lightly.

[Beach City Courthouse, 9 am tomorrow.]

Short and simple, as if she didn’t deserve any more than that. The butterflies in her stomach dropped dead in an instant. She realized how foolish she had been for expecting more from this man.

[Ok.] Renee replied, matching his energy.

As far as Renee was concerned, Stefan seriously had issues.Every now and then, he'd say things that completely threw her off and act like there was some blood feud between them. Whenever she tried pressing him for answers, he'd avoid the topic and change the subject. It drove her insane every single time.It happened again and again. It got to the point where they would always part in anger after getting into the same heated discussions. Each time that happened, she swore to herself she would never deal with him again. Yet every single time, the moment he got even slightly closer to her, she hopelessly fell right back into the same cycle.Honestly, she wasn't even angry at him anymore. She was angry at herself. The two of them stayed silent the entire drive back to Everheart Manor. But when they got home this time, Joanne, the kids, and even Quinton were all there. The group sat together on the living room couch watching a movie, and strangely enough, no one mentioned where t

"Well…"Renee hesitated for a moment. Seeing how well the kids and Margaret were getting along, she finally agreed. "Alright then. We'll leave quietly, just like in Farewell to Combridge. Quietly as we came."She and Stefan got back into the car. The moon in the sky up ahead did make this feel a little romantic. After everything that had happened that day, Renee was exhausted. Somehow, she ended up leaning against the window and falling asleep. She didn't know how much time had passed before she opened her eyes again and realized the car had stopped, but they weren't at Everheart Manor."Where are we?"She looked around and instantly tensed up."The beach," Stefan answered calmly."Oh. The beach."Oddly enough, the answer didn't surprise her at all. In fact, it felt reasonable. It was like she'd returned to where she truly belonged. She could hear the sound of rolling waves outside the car. With the window rolled down, the occasional gusts of ocean breeze somehow made her f

The two of them wasted no time and sped all the way to the small countryside house where Margaret was staying. After Renee revamped the area, far fewer strangers came seeking 'treatment,' so the place had become much quieter.Even before entering the yard, they could already hear the kids' cheerful laughter drifting from inside."Whew! Thank goodness!"Renee and Stefan looked at each other. Tears shimmered in Renee's eyes. They were tears of relief, the kind that came after unbearable tension suddenly melted away. Her two precious kids, along with Joanne, were safe after all."I told you those two little troublemakers are smart. They usually won't get themselves into real danger. Stop stressing yourself out so much in the future."Stefan slipped an arm around Renee's shoulders. His heart ached for how much she worried as a mother."Listen to you talking. Weren't you exactly the same? Whose face went pale and looked ready to blow up the entire planet?"Renee raised a brow and s

At such a close distance, it was as though they could feel each other's heartbeat through the thin fabric of their clothes. Their warm breaths mixed in the air, making the atmosphere not only intimate, but heated."Ahem! It's so hot in here!"Renee tugged at her shirt and tried to let in a bit of cool air. She had on a light blue dress that accentuated her figure so well it could easily make one's imagination run wild."I-I'll go turn on the AC."Stefan stood up. His voice was unnaturally hoarse. He wanted to slap himself twice. How could he let his thoughts wander at a time like this?"There's no need to. Finding the kids is more important. Let's figure out where they went first."Compared to him, Renee stayed much calmer. Aside from feeling a little awkward, all of her attention remained fixed on the surveillance footage.Eventually, she vaguely heard the kids discussing going to visit Margaret. In the video, Abby and Adie talked about how much they missed Margaret. The two of them entered the bedroom. The familiar environment made Stefan feel as though he had stepped into his own room, and his gaze instinctively wandered around. As expected, the first thing he noticed was the antique painting by Henry Somerset hanging on the wall. His heart clenched instantly. That's because he had seen that painting before. In fact, he was still very young at the time."This painting…"Stefan walked up to it and examined it carefully. There was a troubled expression on his face."What's wrong? Don't tell me you've seen this painting too?" While booting up the computer, Renee glanced back curiously at him."It's an original by Henry Somerset. It's not strange that I've seen it before," Stefan answered vaguely before adding in a probing tone, "Since when were you interested in things like this? I remember you used to look down on antiques and paintings like these. You said they were only valuable because of nostalgia and hype."He still remembered when the

"What? The kids are missing?"Stefan frowned. His expression instantly turned grim.Just like Renee, the children were his weak spot. He could stay calm about almost anything else, but the moment the kids were involved, all reason went out the window."I got tied up with something unexpected today. I naively thought maybe since Joanne was acting normal again, it'd be fine to let her pick up the kids. When I got home…"Renee crouched on the floor. She bit her lip as her body trembled uncontrollably with fear. The old Renee had feared nothing. She used to be the freest, boldest woman in the world. But ever since becoming a mother, she had become timid. Every decision was made cautiously. The slightest hint of trouble would make her panic. She had become an ordinary woman and an ordinary mother."You…"Stefan's first instinct was to blame her. Just like Quinton, he believed Joanne was far too unstable, and that the kids should never have been left in her care. However, seeing h

“You’re such an ungrateful man. How paranoid!”Renee walked out of the chamber in a huff, unable to stop herself from cursing out loud. She must be crazy. Why bother being kind to him? "If you really are allergic to alcohol," Stefan told Renee snidely, "it's not too late to back out."His sole purpose was to make her realize the difficulty that came with her new position and give up, not to harm her in any way. But Renee kept on pretending to be a pitiful young girl and replied, "I
