Chapter 3

Author: Mizuki Sei
The next day, Renee showed up at the courthouse at 8:30 am, even though they agreed to meet at nine.

Not only did she arrive early, but she also made sure to put on heavy makeup and her favorite outfit, a rose-red halter dress. With her long hair tied up into a ponytail, the skin on her neck and back glowed under the bright sunlight.

When paired with her elegant, yet cold demeanor, she looked angelic from afar.

Unfortunately, she had caught a cold the night before. Her body was burning up, which made her feel quite weak.

At 9 am sharp, a silver Bugatti Veyron cruised into the parking lot in front of the courthouse. Soon after, she was greeted by Stefan’s ice-cold expression as he exited the vehicle.

His eyes sparkled for a split second when he saw Renee standing there, but this was quickly replaced with a contemptuous expression for some reason.

“Well, aren’t you excited?” Stefan scoffed as he walked past Renee, heading straight towards the department that handled divorce cases.

‘…What’s his deal?!’ Renee thought to herself as she stared up at the tall figure. ‘Aren’t you the one who’s excited? You’re practically running to the counter!’

The procedure went very smoothly. All they had to do was sign a few papers, which took less than ten minutes.

“According to the new law, there is a one-month grace period for all divorces. Should any of you wish to call off the divorce, you can bring along the required documents before the thirty days are up,” explained the staff as he handed them their application forms.

Having worked at the courthouse for years, he had witnessed countless tears and fights during divorce proceedings. This was the first time he had come across such calm individuals at the courthouse.

He simply couldn’t fathom why this couple was divorcing each other. They appeared to be made for each other, especially given their good looks.

Renee immediately took the papers and read through the clauses. She mumbled to herself sarcastically, “There’s a grace period for divorce, but not marriage? If this law applied to marriages as well, I-”

Stefan’s expression darkened. With a cold smirk, he snapped, “Oh? Are you saying you wouldn’t have married me if there was a grace period for marriage?”

“Nope!” Renee lifted an eyebrow. “I got 40 million out of you. 40 million! The average woman wouldn’t even dream of making this much money in their lifetime. I guess you could say I struck gold!”

Stefan was visibly upset by her reaction. He tugged on his tie out of frustration.

The Renee from before was always very lenient as if she didn’t even have her own opinions. The closer they got to the divorce, the more sharp and spiteful her words became.

Just as they were about to part ways, a soft voice came from behind. “Stef, are you done yet?”

Renee turned around, only to realize it was Briar!

Briar was wearing a white sundress, her gaze filled with a tinge of sadness. She looked like a dandelion that would crumple apart at the slightest breeze. There wasn’t a single shred of arrogance left on her face, unlike the other night when they initially met.

Besides that, Renee had also noticed a slight bump on her belly.

“Didn’t I tell you to wait for me in the car? What are you doing out here?”

“It’s cold out here. This child is important to our family, we can’t afford to have you fall ill while pregnant.”

Stefan’s voice sounded cold and distant as usual.

Seeing the two, Renee couldn’t help but feel betrayed. Deep down in her heart, she felt extremely aggrieved.

“Don’t you think you owe me an explanation, Master Hunt?”

Stefan stared back at Renee expressionlessly.

“I don’t owe you anything.”

Caia was worried about leaving Margaret home alone. Hence, she said to Renee, who was about to set off with her, "Why don't you stay here with my aunt? She misses you lately. I'll go with this guy.""Sure."Similarly, Renee was worried about Margaret. Besides, she felt that it was enough for Stefan and Caia to go to the hospital. Hence, she agreed readily. "Is that okay with you?" Stefan frowned, worried. But he had no idea why he was worried."What are you talking about? My aunt was Ms. Everheart's nanny. She helped raise Ms. Everheart. Even her children are raised by my aunt. Will my aunt ever harm Ms. Everheart?" Caia grumpily criticized Stefan. Margaret was always very worried about that family and had exhausted herself. But Stefan was on guard against her. It filled Caia with displeasure. If Margaret had not insisted, Caia would never have helped Stefan. "I didn't mean that." Stefan always respected Margaret, so he explained calmly, "I'm just worried about them. I don'

"Margaret!" Renee's eyes brightened when she saw Margaret come out of the room. She acted like a helpless child who had finally found her mother, who would unconditionally protect her.She let go of Stefan's hand and rushed toward Margaret, her eyes red. She hugged Margaret's arm tightly. "It's been a few days. Are you okay? I miss you so much! I'm not used to the days without you by my side.""I'm sorry, Ms. Ren. I've been slacking off these days. I'm sure you're very busy. I'll go home after a few days' rest." Margaret gently patted Renee's back as if she were putting the latter to bed when the latter was young. She was tender and patient. "No, that's not it!" Renee hurriedly shook her head and explained, "I'm not used to the days not having your company. I can still handle other things. I'm not tired, either. Just rest well. You can come home whenever you want."Renee's attachment toward Margaret was in her emotions rather than daily life. She would panic, though she was tou

"Did I give you up?" Renee sneered at Stefan's question and retorted, "Who gave the other up first? You or me?""It's not the time for that. Don't you find this so-called physician weird? We hold her no grudge. Why does she want to sew discord between us?" Stefan purposely avoided Renee's interrogation and looked at Caia vigilantly. He felt that Caia was a bad person, or at least someone difficult to tackle."What's our relationship like? We don't need her to sew discord, either."Renee sneered again and found Stefan's worry unnecessary. Their relationship was already ruined. They didn't need Caia to sew discord between them either. "Initially, you wanted me to disappear from your world. I'm just granting your wish, and I can ask Caia to cure your aunt at the same time. Isn't it a win-win situation? Why are you wasting time?"Renee thought that Stefan was just dawdling. It was not a big deal. He did not have to hold conflicted feelings like that. Speechless, Stefan's face wen

Stefan couldn't bear to see Renee try to please another person for his sake. Hence, he said coldly, "There are a lot of exceptional physicians in the world. She's not the only one. Let's go!""No way! There are a lot of exceptional physicians in the world, true, but meeting them isn't easy. We finally met one today. Of course, we can't miss this chance! Plus, your aunt can't afford to wait."Renee turned around and whispered to Stefan solemnly, "I know you've always been proud and never bowed down to anyone. And I didn't ask you to bow down. I'm doing that instead. Just leave it to me. As long as your aunt is cured, it's fine." "The truly good doctors instinctively cure people. No one is as superior and arrogant as her. I guess you're fooled by her tricks."Initially, Stefan had high hopes for Caia. After all, he felt much better and energetic after drinking that herbal soup.It proved that Caia was excellent. She was the only heiress of the Albus Order, so her medical skills w

For a moment, Renee felt awkward. She hurriedly walked over and said, "Oh, Caia, you're home. I thought you were away!""I'm treating a patient." Caia wore an indifferent expression, revealing none of her emotions. She did not feel much about Renee. She was merely polite toward the latter because of Margaret. However, Margaret became tired and seriously ill due to Renee. She did not even want to go through with the treatment just because she did not want Renee to worry. Hence, Caia became more or less dissatisfied with Renee. Caia felt that Margaret had sacrificed too much for Renee. If Margaret had not wholeheartedly taken care of the Everheart family and gotten treatment earlier, she might not be that seriously ill."Mm, did I disturb you?" Renee could feel that Caia was colder toward her in comparison to the other day. Caia was even filled with hostility. She wondered if she had delayed Caia's treatment, and became apologetic. "Yes, you've disturbed me." Caia was icy. Sh

Margaret heard Renee's voice. Her initial reaction was one of happiness and excitement. It had been a few days since she last met Renee. She missed the latter very much. But on second thought, she became worried when she imagined Renee seeing her in this state. "Hurry up and keep these things. I can't let Ms. Ren realize that I'm getting treatment."Margaret's body was full of needles. Caia was burning some herbs and treating Margaret using a medical method that she had devised. Caia frowned and prohibited Margaret from ending the treatment. "Aunt Margaret, I've calculated my steps well. We must follow my plan and can't end things casually. If not, it'll harm your body even more." Any treatment came with a risk. Caia's created method valued the duration of the treatment highly. It should be adequate. If the treatment was paused all of a sudden, it would not be effective and would cause grave damage to the patient's organs. Hence, Caia would not allow Margaret to end the treatm
