Chapter 4

Author: Eirlys
Mom instantly got defensive and snapped back:

"What do you mean 'your' dress? The money you have is from me. Taking a dress from you makes you feel wronged? You're so cold!"

It wasn't the same.

If our family was truly struggling for money, I would gladly give my things up.

But Mom clearly didn't lack the money to buy Lyra a new dress. It was just that she didn't care about me or my things, so she could just casually take a dress I cherished and give it to Lyra.

I raised my voice.

"Taking without asking is stealing! You're completely disrespecting me!"

Liam abruptly stood up from his chair and pointed his finger in my face, yelling.

"Carrie, watch your mouth!"

"What do you mean 'stealing'? That's our mother!"

Kaelen frowned too, his tone full of his usual lecturing.

"Carrie, you're being too extreme. We're a family, what's this talk about stealing?"

"Your mom probably took it because she knew you couldn't pull off that kind of elegance."

"Besides, Lyra got an A-rank. As her older sister, you should be letting her have it anyway!"

But that was money I scraped together by starving myself for half a year.

I couldn't bear to buy new clothes, snacks, or even a single cup of coffee.

"Pay me back."

I glared at Mom, my eyes bloodshot.

"Give me the money for the dress."

Mom turned her head guiltily, but quickly regained her self-righteous attitude.

"It's already been altered, how am I supposed to pay you back?!"

"Besides, with your terrible ranking, what right do you have to wear such nice clothes!"

Lyra pulled on Mom's sleeve, her eyes red.

"Mom, stop fighting with Carrie. It's all my fault..."

"Why don't I just take it off and give it back to her?"

She said she'd give it back, but her hands gripped the skirt tightly, her tone full of reluctance.

Mom immediately stepped in front of her protectively, her heart breaking for her.

"Carrie, your wings have grown strong, haven't they!"

"Get back to your room and reflect on your behavior. Don't come out without my permission!"

Liam stepped forward, grabbed my arm hard, and shoved me toward my room.

"No! I didn't do anything wrong!"

I struggled desperately.

But I couldn't overpower Liam.

The door was slammed shut and locked from the outside.

I leaned against the door and slowly slid to the floor.

Through the door, I heard them comforting each other.

They all said Mom wasn't wrong, and Lyra was innocent.

I was the one who messed up; it was all my fault for being so selfish.

But Lyra had ten, a hundred times more resources than I did.

Why did they have to steal the only thing I had left?

I curled into a ball and cried silently.

For the next week, to punish me for acting out, the whole family treated me like I was invisible.

They didn't call me for meals, didn't take me when they went out.

They thought this would break me, make me apologize.

But for eighteen years, I had always been ignored.

I was used to it.

Since I had some time before leaving for my new pack, I started packing.

No one cared what I was doing in my room all day.

And no one noticed I was slowly erasing every trace of my existence from the house.

Old clothes, old books—all thrown into the trash.

The gifts Kaelen had given me over the years—all sold for cash.

After getting my travel pass for Bloodmoon, I took one last look at this house.

Starting when I was eight, because Lyra needed a huge walk-in closet, I was forced to give up my room and move into a tiny storage closet.

The white walls of this house would forever only hang pictures of Lyra.

The few scattered photos of me were buried at the very bottom of the photo albums.

I had wanted to leave this house for a long time.

I dragged my only suitcase and took a cab to the airport.

On the way, my phone kept ringing, probably rushing me to attend the celebration banquet they threw for Lyra.

I didn't answer a single one.

That banquet was destined to have only one main character: Lyra.

I didn't want to be an awkward background prop, listening to relatives and friends take turns praising her.

Only to dismiss me with a casual,

"Oh, Carrie passed too. That's nice."

I blocked everyone's numbers, shut off my mind-link, and boarded the flight North.

From this day forward, I would never see them again.

Four years passed in a flash. On the promotion board for the Bloodmoon Pack, my name was displayed right at the top.I had become the youngest Chief Beta in history. In those three years, I had helped expand the Bloodmoon Pack's power even further.I participated in the pack's core decision-making and strategized alongside the Alpha.I was no longer the marginalized wolf hiding in a storage closet, trading pieces of herself just to beg for a tiny scrap of her parents' attention.I had grown sharp fangs, gained absolute authority, and carved out a massive world that belonged only to me.My generous salary was more than enough to cover all my expenses. It let me buy a large villa with a garden downtown, where I got to choose the layout of every single room, and I drove a top-tier sports car.I bought tons of clothes that I actually liked.I was living well—a million times better than I had during the entire eighteen years in that house.During this time, my so-called family came to find

I glanced coldly at the spilled coffee on the ground. Then I looked up at him."Throwing a tantrum? I was an invisible ghost for eighteen years, and now I've completely disappeared just like you guys wanted. Shouldn't you be happy?"Liam was left speechless, then pointed at me in defensive rage."You're just selfish! Cold-blooded! I always knew you were unlikable since we were kids, and now you're even worse!""Lyra is so upset about you she can't even adapt to her new environment. Does your conscience not hurt?""That's her problem."I replied coldly, turning around to head upstairs without looking back."Also, if you put your hands on me or my things again, I'm calling pack security."Liam roared behind me, but in the end, he didn't dare chase after me.The third person to come was Kaelen. It was on a weekend night. It was pouring rain outside, but he stood out there stubbornly without an umbrella. Those eyes that once made my heart flutter were now red, staring dead at me."Carrie."

The first person to find me was Dad.Rumor had it he harassed the Elders for a month until he finally got my location. When I walked out of the training center, I saw Dad standing by the gate.We hadn't seen each other in only two months, but he looked like he'd aged ten years.Half his hair had turned white, and his back wasn't as straight as it used to be.The moment he saw me, his eyes turned red, and he hurried over, trying to grab my hand."Carrie! I finally found you!"I took a step back, dodging his touch."What are you doing here?"Dad's hand froze mid-air, and he forced an ingratiating smile."Carrie, come home with Dad.""Your mom cries every day. She's practically going blind.""Lyra is completely out of it too. The house is a mess."I stared at him coldly. "What does that have to do with me?""How can you say something like that!"Dad grew anxious, his voice rising."That's your family! You... you left in such a hurry, we didn't even pack your bags or give you enough money.

(Carrie's POV)The plane pierced through the clouds and landed in the North. As I walked out of the airport, the biting, frigid air hit my face.Taking a deep breath, I felt an unprecedented sense of relief.Like a thorn that had been lodged in my heart for eighteen years had finally been pulled out.Though it bled a little, it would no longer fester and ache.In the territory of the Bloodmoon Pack, even the air tasted of ice, snow, and freedom. When I arrived at the base with my suitcase, Beta Julian, the Alpha's right hand, personally greeted me at the gate."Carrie, welcome to the Bloodmoon Pack."Julian enthusiastically extended his hand."Thank you.""An S-rank genius! We've been looking forward to this! Come, your apartment is this way!"Because of my top-tier ranking, I was assigned a private apartment. It was spacious, bright, and from the window, you could see the distant mountains.I spent the whole afternoon decorating the place with warm tones that I loved.I put on brand-n

Mom snatched the paper. When her eyes landed on that glaring S-rank symbol and the familiar photo next to it, her vision went black and she swayed on her feet.It was real. The daughter she had casually dismissed with "poor ranking, go to a small pack" and "worse than her sister in every way"...Was actually the only first-place S-rank in the entire district! And her precious younger daughter's A-rank looked incredibly mediocre compared to an S-rank.Even worse, she had just been bragging to all these guests about how Lyra was the pride of the family. The surrounding whispers had now turned into biting mockery."That mother is way too biased. She has an S-rank daughter and doesn't even care?""If you ask me, she intentionally put Carrie down to lift Lyra up. Now she's made a fool of herself!""I heard they treat Carrie even worse behind closed doors—no allowance, and they made her sleep in a storage room.""I can't believe there are parents this biased..."Lyra's face instantly went de

(Lyra's POV)On the other side of town, at a high-end restaurant downtown. The top-floor banquet hall was luxurious, filled with clinking glasses and mingling guests.Almost all the relatives and acquaintances of our family were there.Mom wore a custom gown, her face glowing as she mingled with the guests.Dad held a glass of red wine, soaking up compliments from his business partners. He praised his youngest daughter to anyone who would listen."Old friend, your Lyra has always been a model child. And getting an A-rank this time—her future is limitless!"A man with a beer belly raised his glass to flatter Dad.Dad proudly threw his head back and downed his wine."Oh, it's nothing! It's mostly just her own talent. We parents didn't do much, just provided her with the best conditions we could!"Mom couldn't stop smiling as she affectionately held Lyra's arm."Lyra, that dress is gorgeous. Is it new?" an eagle-eyed aunt asked. Before Lyra could speak, Mom rushed to brag:"I just had a h
