Mia's POV

I woke up because I had to pee.

My bladder felt like it was about to burst, a consequence of drinking too much wine at that goddamn cruise party. The taste in my mouth was stale and metallic.

Thomas and I had fallen asleep on the sofa. We were both exhausted. His arm still wrapped around me.

I tried to move carefully, not wanting to wake him, but the moment I shifted my weight, every muscle in my body protested. The expensive dress I was still wearing had twisted around my legs, the fabric wrinkled and uncomfortable against my skin.

As I stood up slowly, I caught a whiff of myself and nearly gagged.

I smelled really bad.

Like a combination of spilled wine, expensive perfume that had gone rancid, and the lingering scent of cigarette smoke from the cruise ship. My hair felt greasy and flat against my scalp, and I could feel the sticky residue of makeup caked on my face.

Thomas was still sound asleep, his dark hair falling across his forehead. His tie hung loosely around his ne

MiaThe corrections officer led Madison and me through a series of increasingly sterile corridors, our footsteps echoing off polished concrete floors. Madison's small hand gripped mine tightly, her fingers still trembling."This way, ma'am," the officer said, stopping at a heavy steel door marked "Interview Room C." He produced a key ring that jangled with metallic finality. "The child will wait in here with Officer Martinez while you have your meeting."Through the reinforced glass window, I could see a smaller room furnished with child-friendly furniture—bright plastic chairs, a low table scattered with coloring books and crayons, posters of cartoon animals attempting to make this place feel less like what it was. Officer Martinez, a middle-aged woman with kind eyes and graying hair, looked up from where she was arranging art supplies."Madison," I knelt down to her level, smoothing her dark hair away from her face. "You're going to stay here with Officer Martinez for a little while

Mia "You want to know the truth?" Victoria continued, her voice dropping to a hiss. "The truth is that Kyle Branson is dying. Dying! And when he's gone, what do you think will happen to your precious little fairy tale? You think his money will keep protecting you forever?""That's enough," I said firmly."You'll be just another single mother with too many kids and not enough money. And then maybe you'll understand what it feels like to have everything taken away from you. Maybe then you'll understand what I've been going through."The corrections officer was approaching our table now, but Victoria wasn't finished."And you," she said, turning back to Madison with wild eyes, "You'll learn that people like them don't keep people like us. We're just entertainment to them. A charity case that makes them feel good about themselves."Madison's chin trembled, but her voice was clear when she spoke. "I love Mia. She takes care of me.""Love!" Victoria's laugh was like breaking glass. "You th

Mia's POVThe smell, industrial disinfectant mixed with something. The kind of smell that lived in the walls of places where people went when society had decided they couldn't be trusted with freedom anymore.Madison's small hand found mine as we walked through the metal detector, her fingers cold despite the building's aggressive heating. She'd been quiet during the drive here, sitting in her booster seat with her elephant clutched against her chest, staring out the window at the gray February sky like she was memorizing clouds."Remember what we talked about," I said softly as we waited in the sterile lobby area. Around us, other visitors shifted in plastic chairs—a woman bouncing a crying baby, an elderly man clutching a paper bag that probably contained homemade cookies, a teenager with headphones around her neck who kept checking her phone.Madison nodded, her grip on her elephant tightening. "If I get scared, I can ask to leave.""That's right." I smoothed her hair. "And what el

Mia's POVThe morning light caught the dust motes that danced in the air like tiny fairies. Madison sat cross-legged on my bed, her small back straight and patient while I worked a wide-tooth comb through her dark hair.I seem to have kept forgetting to mention this. Madison's natural hair color is black, not blonde.Victoria had dyed it before."How would you like it today, sweetheart?" I asked, sectioning off a small strand to work through a tiny knot. "Braids? A ponytail? Or maybe something special?"Madison's reflection in my dresser mirror showed me her serious face. "Could you make it look like a princess?" she asked finally, her voice small but hopeful. "Like the kind in the books Alexander likes, with the hair that looks like it's made of sunshine?""I think we can definitely make you look like a princess," I said, kissing the top of her head. "What kind of princess style were you thinking?"Madison twisted around to face me. "Could you braid it? But not regular braids—the fan

Mia "Thank you for fixing my drone," Alexander said, his voice muffled against Kyle's hospital gown. "You're the best fixer in the whole world.""You're very welcome," Kyle replied. "But you did most of the work yourself. You identified the problem, you read the manual, you asked good questions. I just had slightly steadier hands."Alexander pulled back to look at Kyle's face. "Will you teach me how to fix other things? Like when my Legos break, or when my toy cars stop rolling straight?"Kyle's eyes found mine over Alexander's head. "I'd like that very much" .Before I could respond, Ethan stepped closer to the bed, his attention focused on something that had caught his eye. His small hand reached out to touch Kyle's fingers where they rested on the hospital blanket."You do that thing too," Ethan said quietly, his voice carrying the wonder of someone who had just discovered they weren't alone in the world."What thing?" Kyle asked, following Ethan's gaze."When you concentrate on s

Mia's POV"Don't say that," I whispered, my voice breaking on the words. The tears came faster now. "Don't talk about someday."Kyle's eyes softened, but I could see the resignation there."Mia—""No." I leaned forward. "I believe in exceptions. I believe in miracles. You won't convince me."The afternoon light shifted through the hospital blinds, casting moving patterns across Kyle's face. He looked younger when he smiled, the sharp edges of illness softening that reminded me of all those years."I love your optimism," he said gently, his free hand reaching up to catch a tear that had escaped down my cheek. "But this isn't a fairy tale."His thumb traced across my cheekbone with the careful tenderness of someone memorizing a texture. "My immune system is eating me alive from the inside out."I could taste salt on my lips, but I didn't care. "Then find new doctors. New treatments.""Mia, they all said the same thing.""Then they're wrong. Sometimes doctors are wrong. "Kyle studied my
