LOGINHANNAH’S POV:After all, it was going to be our first dinner in this new house, and though I couldn’t shake off the unease of how we’d ended up here, I didn’t want to leave in discomfort and constant worrying. I was going to let things play out.The dining room looked like something out of a magazine. The long mahogany table was set for eight, glistening under a crystal chandelier that scattered diamond light across the polished wood. Mr. Dean had outdone himself; there were platters of roast lamb drizzled in rosemary sauce, seafood pasta, mashed potatoes with truffle butter, and a colorful array of salads, fruits, and desserts that could tempt even the most disciplined eater. At the far end of the table, a bottle of aged red wine waited, unopened, though I doubted Elijah had placed it there for me.Andrew and Amelia came running down the stairs, laughing in their matching semi-formal outfits Andrew in a navy shirt and pants, Amelia in a pink dress with tiny flowers sewn across the he
HANNAH’S POV:A WEEK LATER:I doubt anyone in the history of time had ever been able to move as fast as we had in just a week. Elijah had a house uptown, and he had managed to move all his belongings in there and in less than a week we were in a new mansion. It was a gorgeous mansion, it could almost be mistaken for a palace. It had a beautiful fountain right in front and a luxurious entrance, each room had the most beautiful chalnders designs I had ever come across. The atmosphere smelt like flowers and strawberry so I stepped into the kitchen where the house chef, Mr Dean, was preparing some dessert for tonight and he had given the kids a taste of the batter and their eyes widen at how delicious it tasted. The air was warm yet chilly at the same time, but I felt a kind of welcoming air. I loved how spotless everywhere was, and I smiled seeing a large piano in the ground thinking how it would be great for the kids to learn how to play. As we got settled in, I couldn’t help but star
HANNAH’S POV:“This is Mr Smith, my lawyer.” He introduced us and I let out a breath and stared at the both of them. What did they have up their sleeves? The lawyer cleared his throat but said nothing yet, simply adjusted his tie. Elijah ignored my tone and attitude, setting the takeout down on the side table. “You work too much, Hannah. You forget to eat….”“Don’t,” I muttered, my voice barely holding. He didn’t respond right away but he just studied me, almost admiringly, as though he was rediscovering me in this polished office space, surrounded by power and elegance that had nothing to do with him.“You’ve done well for yourself,” he commended at last, his tone a mixture of pride and regret. “You really built something from the ground up.”“I had to,” I replied. “Some of us didn’t have the luxury of being reckless.”The lawyer finally spoke up and I took my seat staring at them. “Mrs. Martinez—”“Jones,” I corrected coldly and sharply. He gave a brief, uncomfortable smile. “Mrs. J
HANNAH’S POV:THE NEXT DAY:“So there’s still nothing on what happened at the Governor’s birthday party and guess what I just received on your behalf.” Maya excitedly said, and soon revealed a vase with flowers and a gift basket.I grinned from ear to ear as she smiled handing me the card, “This is from the Governor’s wife?” I asked rhetorically as my eyes darted to the card in front of me. Thank you so much for the beautiful dresses, your taste and style is impeccable. As a woman, we have to keep supporting and protecting each other.I hope all is well with you and the gift basket was from my daughters.Don’t be a stranger here, you are welcome always. Love, Governor Mrs Kareem.I admired how the letter was written in cursive and how I was thought about. It made me so happy that I was still so respected but respectable women. “This is so kind. Please have Kara note that I have to send her flowers later in the week as appreciation.” I told Maya who nodded, jotting it in her tablet
ELIJAH’S POV:The air between us stilled. The noise of children playing in the distance only made her words louder in my head. I wanted to reach for her, but my hands felt heavy and I didn’t want to ever touch without her consent and command.“I’m different now,” I told her after a moment, desperate to fill the silence. “I don’t drink anymore.”She didn’t respond, and I hated that my honesty didn’t matter to her. I took a step closer. “Hannah, I meant what I said last night. I missed seven years of my children’s lives. I don’t want to waste another minute. I want to be part of this family please. Move in with me. You and the twins.”She blinked at me, disbelief flickering in her eyes before it hardened into anger. “Move in with you?”“Yes,” I said, trying to sound calm, logical. “You’ll be safe. The kids will have both parents. We don’t have to pretend anymore. We can start over.”She laughed quietly, bitterly. “Start over? With the man who forced himself on me, treated me like a stra
ELIJAH’S POV:THAT SAME DAY:“Andrew!” She called out to him, and I watched as he closed his eyes and handed the gift back to me and walked off.Amelia mirrored his actions looking at me with irritation mixed with disappointment and walked hastily after him. I stood there and mentally grimaced at what just happened. How did things go wrong so fast when I already knew they only seemed to be entertaining me simply because they could see the anxious look on Hannah’s face even though she probably had no idea of that. I shouldn’t have given them the gifts knowing I was working on thin ice, but then again I did think they would be impressed. Or maybe I shouldn’t have wrapped it in a gift paper. I stood there, feeling the gift grow heavier in my grip. My chest tightened as I watched them, my children, walk away from me without a word. I couldn’t even describe when I actually officially met them. Just watching the three of them walking towards me, for the first time in a long time I felt l
