Chapter 1

The director had barely finished introducing the two households when Vera threw herself into Mrs. Miller’s arms.

“Mom, take me home. I want to be your daughter.”

Mrs. Miller froze for a few seconds, then hugged her, visibly touched. Beside her, Mr. Miller began to smile.

They were both human. He worked in maintenance at the academy, and she was a cleaner. They had dressed for the occasion, but their worn cuffs and work-roughened hands still showed years of hard labor.

Across from them, Count Ashford wore a perfectly tailored suit. His wife was immaculate from head to toe.

They were pureblood vampires. Their family owned the city’s largest business group and was the academy’s biggest donor.

Their only son, Sebastian, stood by the window, looking utterly uninterested in the meeting.

In our first life, Vera had taken one look at the Ashfords and chosen them.

Now she clung to Mrs. Miller as though this were the life she had always dreamed of.

The director looked surprised.

“Vera, are you sure?”

“Yes.”

She answered immediately, then looked at me over Mrs. Miller’s shoulder, barely hiding her triumph.

I knew what she was thinking.

Now that she had claimed the Millers, I would have to go with the Ashfords.

Sure enough, the countess turned to me.

“And you?”

I glanced at Vera.

“I’ll go with the Ashfords.”

The Millers were applying to adopt a child. The Ashfords were participating in the Vampire Council’s guardianship program for human orphans. They would provide housing and an education, while presenting themselves to the public as a noble family willing to welcome a human into their home.

Vera hadn’t cared about the distinction in our first life.

All she had seen was the Ashfords’ wealth and the heir standing by the window.

Sebastian finally looked up.

His gaze lingered on me for a few seconds. There was nothing welcoming about it.

I didn’t care.

In my first life, I had already seen how gentle he could be. I had also died after that supposed happy ending.

Whether he liked me this time no longer mattered.

Once the paperwork was finished, we left the orphanage together.

Vera linked her arm through Mrs. Miller’s, acting as though they were already close. She asked Mr. Miller about his work at the academy and assured them she could do all kinds of chores and would help around the house.

The Millers clearly liked her.

Mrs. Miller stroked her hair and told her several times what a thoughtful girl she was.

Vera’s smile grew wider.

She probably thought this was everything I had been given in my first life: a poor but loving family, followed by Sebastian noticing my hard work, falling in love with me, and marrying me into vampire nobility.

What she didn’t know was that my years with the Millers had been nothing like the life she imagined.

When my adoptive father got drunk, he searched my schoolbag for money. I had to find ways to hide every scholarship payment I received.

They only became warm toward me after Sebastian started pursuing me.

Once they learned he intended to marry me, they began taking a serious interest in my “future” for the first time.

Vera had never seen any of that.

She had seen Sebastian bringing me home, the Millers smiling as they invited him to stay for dinner, and the lavish wedding that followed.

She thought poverty was just a little hardship at the beginning of a happy story.

All she had to do was get through it, and someone would come to save her.

When we reached the parking lot, Vera let go of Mrs. Miller and walked over to me.

She lowered her voice.

“This time, he’s going to fall in love with me.”

Then she turned and ran toward the Millers’ old car.

The Ashfords’ driver had already opened my door.

Sebastian stood on the other side of the car and gave me a cold look.

“My family can support you. Just don’t start thinking that makes you an Ashford.”

He had given Vera the same warning in our first life.

He hated people approaching him for his family’s money or status.

I got into the car without answering.

Through the window, I watched Vera chatting happily with the Millers.

She thought forcing me into the Ashford household meant handing me the nightmare she had lived through.

But I had never intended to make it my home.

I wanted the education they could give me, and the time to use it.

As soon as I could support myself, I would leave.

After I left the hospital, I didn’t ask about Vera or Sebastian again.Leah came to pick me up. She put my bag in the car before asking, “Can you still make next week’s investor meeting?”“Couldn’t you ask about my leg first?”“The doctor said nothing’s broken. Two weeks to recover. I’ve already moved the meeting online.”“Then why ask?”“Because you might insist on going.”I smiled and got into the car.She knew what I wanted to do. She also remembered that I needed rest. Our company became profitable in its third year. By the fifth, we were preparing to go public. The original software had grown into a management platform used by human hospitals and vampire blood suppliers.Over those years, I ended my financial ties with the Ashfords.Under the guardianship program, my education had been their responsibility. The business loans had been repaid with interest, and the jewelry had long since been returned.I didn’t deny that they had given me opportunities. But I no longer needed their

Sebastian became much more careful after that. Not because he had suddenly become a better person, but because the academy’s bullying investigation was still ongoing. His old friends began keeping their distance. The count warned him that if he caused another scandal that damaged the family’s reputation, his accounts would be frozen and his plans to study abroad canceled.Meanwhile, Vera’s act was beginning to fall apart. When the graduation results came out, she had no scholarship and hadn’t gotten into the university she wanted. The tutoring sessions, competitions, and recommendations she had passed up were no longer available.Sebastian was preparing to attend college abroad. She kept begging him to take her along.“I can work. I won’t cost you much. I just need you to help with my first year’s tuition.”He paid it in the end.But he no longer seemed to enjoy saving her the way he once had.The girl he had first liked was the one who kept saying, “I don’t want it.” Now Vera had to k

The day I returned to the academy to collect my graduation paperwork, I ran into Vera in the hallway. She stood beside the lockers, watching the Ashfords’ interview on her phone. In the video, the countess had her arm linked through mine while the count sat beside us, answering questions. The interviewer asked how they had raised a human girl who ranked first in her class and had been accepted to Wharton. The count spent ten minutes discussing his approach to education. The countess even smiled and said, “We’ve always wanted her to have the freedom to pursue what she truly wants.”If I hadn’t known they rarely bothered to ask about my grades, I might have believed them. After the interview, the three of us had posed for a photograph outside the academy. We certainly looked like a happy family.Vera stared at me for a long time.“What did you do?”“What?”“Why are they suddenly treating you so well?”She kept her voice low, but couldn’t hide her anger. In our first life, she had spent y

I had paid for every costume in the dance group.Including Vera’s.The reporter was checking the payment details on the order when someone knocked on the conference room door.Leah stood outside. The dance teacher let her in and explained, “She’s also in the dance group. I asked her to come confirm what happened with the costume fees.”Leah walked to the table and glanced at the order.“I couldn’t afford a costume, either. I was going to drop out. When Evelyn found out, she paid for the whole group. She never asked which of us had money and which of us didn’t.”The reporter turned back to Vera.“So Evelyn didn’t remove you because you couldn’t afford a costume. She had actually paid for yours?”“Of course she wouldn’t bully someone in front of everyone,” Vera said quickly. “She’s targeting me because we used to live in the same orphanage.”“But you were removed because you kept missing rehearsals,” Leah said. “I was there. I know how often you showed up.”Vera fell silent.Sebastian fi

The reporter looked through the documents I had placed on the table.“These are the dance group’s rehearsal records?”“Attendance for the past two months,” I said. “Out of more than thirty rehearsals, Vera attended two.”Vera spoke up immediately.“Sometimes I forgot to sign in.”The dance teacher produced another attendance sheet.“She didn’t forget. My records show the same thing. Vera missed rehearsals regularly, and at the final rehearsal she still didn’t know where she was supposed to stand. I had already warned her that she would be removed if she couldn’t meet the requirements.”The reporter compared the two sheets.“So replacing her had nothing to do with her family’s finances?”“Of course not. She hadn’t even learned the full routine. She wasn’t ready to perform.”Vera bit her lip.“But Evelyn did say those things.”Sebastian finally turned to her.“You’re sure she said them herself?”“Of course. She said my parents were just ordinary workers and someone like me didn’t deserve

Over the next two months, Sebastian kept targeting me.My lunch was thrown in the trash. Dead spiders appeared in my locker. Someone burned holes in my new dress with a cigarette. He was probably waiting for me to cry or complain to his parents.I just threw out what was ruined and went back to class. The most valuable thing the Ashfords could give me wasn’t clothes, jewelry, or luxury cars. It was time.In my first life, I had spent my afternoons helping my adoptive mother work, then gone home to keep my adoptive father from searching my schoolbag for money. This time, I didn’t have to work or worry about my next meal. I could spend that time studying.Vera still wore old clothes to help Mrs. Miller clean the academy. She told Sebastian she would keep at it, no matter how tired she was.But she kept skipping tutoring sessions. As her grades slipped, the competition spots her teachers had recommended her for went to other students. She thought she could make up for all of it later. As
