Chapter 2

Author: Jasmine Flower
Vera had been right. Sebastian’s cruelty toward me began even sooner than it had in our first life.

On my third day at the academy, several vampire boys cornered me in a restroom. Someone grabbed my hair and shoved my face into a sink full of ice-cold water. I could hear laughter and jeering all around me. They didn’t yank me up until my chest hurt.

I braced myself against the sink, coughing as water dripped from my hair.

Sebastian stood in front of me, looking down at me.

“You wanted to live with the Ashfords, didn’t you? You got your wish. Happy now?”

In our first life, he had told me he hated people who used their family’s status to bully others. Now he was the one who had brought these boys to corner me.

Back then, he had thought I deserved protection. This time, he had decided I was a girl who had moved into his house for money. What I had actually done didn’t matter to him.

Then his gaze shifted past me, toward the other end of the hallway.

Vera was on her knees, scrubbing the floor.

Someone beside him explained, “Her adoptive mom cleans here. Apparently, she stays after school every day to help.”

Sebastian frowned.

“She has to do that?”

Vera stood up as though she had only just noticed us. Her hands were red from the cold water, but her voice was calm.

“My mom is responsible for this floor. If it isn’t clean, they’ll dock her pay.”

Sebastian glanced at her hands.

“Is that little bit of money worth freezing yourself over?”

“It’s nothing to you. For us, it’s enough to live on for a few days.”

Standing a short distance away, I almost laughed.

I had said nearly the same thing in our first life, in this very hallway. At the time, I hadn’t even known Sebastian was nearby, much less that he had started noticing me that day.

He had told me about it later.

Vera had heard the story, too.

So this time, she had deliberately chosen the same spot and repeated almost the same words.

Sebastian was clearly taken in. He took the rag from her hand and draped his jacket over her shoulders.

“How are you getting home?”

“My bike.”

“In this weather? I’ll have my driver take you.”

This time, Vera accepted.

As she passed me, she glanced up and gave me a small smile when no one else was looking.

She remembered what I had said in our first life, and how much Sebastian had felt for me afterward.

When I turned down his help, it was because I didn’t want him interfering in my life.

Vera was playing at independence to draw him closer.

Once they were gone, I pushed myself upright against the sink. A clean towel appeared in front of me.

“Here. Dry off.”

I looked up and saw Leah Bennett, our class representative.

She was human, too. She had excellent grades and rarely said much. In my first life, she had also handed me a towel after I was bullied, but we had barely spoken after that.

“Thank you.”

I took the towel. She nodded and turned to leave, but I called after her.

“Wait. Where’s the cafeteria?”

She looked back, surprised.

“I just transferred. I don’t know my way around yet.” I rubbed the towel over my dripping hair. “And I’m really hungry.”

She watched me for a moment.

“Come with me.”

When we reached the cafeteria, I asked if she wanted to have dinner together.

She said yes.

Over the meal, we talked about our classes. She explained what the math teacher expected and reminded me that an assignment was due the next morning.

I made a note of it.

Wherever Sebastian and Vera had gone, I still had things to do tomorrow.

The Ashford estate was quiet when I returned that evening.

The count was still at the office. The countess was attending a dinner party, and Sebastian wasn’t home.

I knew where he was.

On this same day in our first life, he had driven me to the Millers’ house for the first time. My adoptive parents had warmly invited him to stay. The table was small and the food was simple, but everyone sat together, talking and laughing. For Sebastian, who had grown up in a noble household, it was something new.

Later, he had told me more than once, “Your family might not have money, but at least it feels like a home.”

Vera had clearly remembered that, too.

This time, she couldn’t wait to bring him to the Millers’ house.

My phone lit up.

Vera had sent me a photo.

Sebastian sat beside her at the cramped dining table. The Millers were beaming, and Vera smiled at the camera with his jacket still around her shoulders.

There was one line beneath it.

So this is what a real home feels like.

I looked at it for a few seconds, then turned off the screen.

In my first life, the Millers had worn those same smiles when they invited Sebastian to stay for dinner.

Later, when I was eighteen, I told them I didn’t want to marry him.

My adoptive mother locked me in my room that night. My adoptive father took my phone. When I tried to leave, he dragged me back from the stairs.

They hadn’t liked Sebastian because he treated me well.

They had liked him because he was rich.

Vera only remembered everyone smiling around that table.

She didn’t know that once the Millers decided Sebastian could change their lives, she wouldn’t be allowed to say she didn’t want him.

After I left the hospital, I didn’t ask about Vera or Sebastian again.Leah came to pick me up. She put my bag in the car before asking, “Can you still make next week’s investor meeting?”“Couldn’t you ask about my leg first?”“The doctor said nothing’s broken. Two weeks to recover. I’ve already moved the meeting online.”“Then why ask?”“Because you might insist on going.”I smiled and got into the car.She knew what I wanted to do. She also remembered that I needed rest. Our company became profitable in its third year. By the fifth, we were preparing to go public. The original software had grown into a management platform used by human hospitals and vampire blood suppliers.Over those years, I ended my financial ties with the Ashfords.Under the guardianship program, my education had been their responsibility. The business loans had been repaid with interest, and the jewelry had long since been returned.I didn’t deny that they had given me opportunities. But I no longer needed their

Sebastian became much more careful after that. Not because he had suddenly become a better person, but because the academy’s bullying investigation was still ongoing. His old friends began keeping their distance. The count warned him that if he caused another scandal that damaged the family’s reputation, his accounts would be frozen and his plans to study abroad canceled.Meanwhile, Vera’s act was beginning to fall apart. When the graduation results came out, she had no scholarship and hadn’t gotten into the university she wanted. The tutoring sessions, competitions, and recommendations she had passed up were no longer available.Sebastian was preparing to attend college abroad. She kept begging him to take her along.“I can work. I won’t cost you much. I just need you to help with my first year’s tuition.”He paid it in the end.But he no longer seemed to enjoy saving her the way he once had.The girl he had first liked was the one who kept saying, “I don’t want it.” Now Vera had to k

The day I returned to the academy to collect my graduation paperwork, I ran into Vera in the hallway. She stood beside the lockers, watching the Ashfords’ interview on her phone. In the video, the countess had her arm linked through mine while the count sat beside us, answering questions. The interviewer asked how they had raised a human girl who ranked first in her class and had been accepted to Wharton. The count spent ten minutes discussing his approach to education. The countess even smiled and said, “We’ve always wanted her to have the freedom to pursue what she truly wants.”If I hadn’t known they rarely bothered to ask about my grades, I might have believed them. After the interview, the three of us had posed for a photograph outside the academy. We certainly looked like a happy family.Vera stared at me for a long time.“What did you do?”“What?”“Why are they suddenly treating you so well?”She kept her voice low, but couldn’t hide her anger. In our first life, she had spent y

I had paid for every costume in the dance group.Including Vera’s.The reporter was checking the payment details on the order when someone knocked on the conference room door.Leah stood outside. The dance teacher let her in and explained, “She’s also in the dance group. I asked her to come confirm what happened with the costume fees.”Leah walked to the table and glanced at the order.“I couldn’t afford a costume, either. I was going to drop out. When Evelyn found out, she paid for the whole group. She never asked which of us had money and which of us didn’t.”The reporter turned back to Vera.“So Evelyn didn’t remove you because you couldn’t afford a costume. She had actually paid for yours?”“Of course she wouldn’t bully someone in front of everyone,” Vera said quickly. “She’s targeting me because we used to live in the same orphanage.”“But you were removed because you kept missing rehearsals,” Leah said. “I was there. I know how often you showed up.”Vera fell silent.Sebastian fi

The reporter looked through the documents I had placed on the table.“These are the dance group’s rehearsal records?”“Attendance for the past two months,” I said. “Out of more than thirty rehearsals, Vera attended two.”Vera spoke up immediately.“Sometimes I forgot to sign in.”The dance teacher produced another attendance sheet.“She didn’t forget. My records show the same thing. Vera missed rehearsals regularly, and at the final rehearsal she still didn’t know where she was supposed to stand. I had already warned her that she would be removed if she couldn’t meet the requirements.”The reporter compared the two sheets.“So replacing her had nothing to do with her family’s finances?”“Of course not. She hadn’t even learned the full routine. She wasn’t ready to perform.”Vera bit her lip.“But Evelyn did say those things.”Sebastian finally turned to her.“You’re sure she said them herself?”“Of course. She said my parents were just ordinary workers and someone like me didn’t deserve

Over the next two months, Sebastian kept targeting me.My lunch was thrown in the trash. Dead spiders appeared in my locker. Someone burned holes in my new dress with a cigarette. He was probably waiting for me to cry or complain to his parents.I just threw out what was ruined and went back to class. The most valuable thing the Ashfords could give me wasn’t clothes, jewelry, or luxury cars. It was time.In my first life, I had spent my afternoons helping my adoptive mother work, then gone home to keep my adoptive father from searching my schoolbag for money. This time, I didn’t have to work or worry about my next meal. I could spend that time studying.Vera still wore old clothes to help Mrs. Miller clean the academy. She told Sebastian she would keep at it, no matter how tired she was.But she kept skipping tutoring sessions. As her grades slipped, the competition spots her teachers had recommended her for went to other students. She thought she could make up for all of it later. As
