Chapter 1

My sister and I were reborn on the day we were adopted from the Greyhaven Home for Young Vampires.

Two families stood inside the director’s office: the Ashcrofts and the Millers.

The Ashcrofts were the most powerful pureblood family in Greyhaven. They controlled most of the city’s blood products, night real estate, and private hospitals.

Mr. Ashcroft was not only the head of the family. His companies paid enough taxes to influence the entire city’s finances.

Mrs. Ashcroft was one of the best-known socialites in vampire high society.

As for their only son, Lucian, he was the sole heir to House Ashcroft.

Everyone in Greyhaven assumed that he would one day become its lord.

Beside them, the Millers looked especially shabby.

According to the director, they were low-ranking vampires employed by Night Academy. Mr. Miller repaired the school buildings and patrolled the grounds at night, while his wife worked as a cleaner.

In our previous life, Sylvia had chosen the Ashcrofts without hesitation.

She had always been prettier and more ambitious than the other children in the orphanage. She believed that with her beauty and intelligence, entering House Ashcroft would guarantee her the finest life imaginable.

This time, she refused to spare the three purebloods another glance.

As though terrified I might reach them first, she threw herself into Mrs. Miller’s arms and held on tightly.

“Mom, please take me home! I want to be your daughter. From today on, my name is Sylvia Miller!”

The Millers had clearly not expected such enthusiasm.

They stared at her for a moment before their faces lit up. Mrs. Miller gathered Sylvia into her arms and stroked her long, soft hair again and again.

As my sister spoke excitedly, I walked toward the Ashcrofts.

Lucian lowered his eyes and studied me with cool disdain. There was no welcome in his gaze, only open suspicion and disgust.

It was exactly how he had looked at Sylvia when they first met in our previous life.

I neither avoided his gaze nor attempted to win his favor.

I calmly took my place in front of Mr. and Mrs. Ashcroft.

Our choices were made, and the two families took us home.

As we left the orphanage, I heard the director murmuring behind us.

“How strange. Sylvia has always been so competitive. Whenever prospective parents arrived in ordinary clothes, she wouldn’t even agree to meet them. Now that a genuine pureblood family has come for her, why would she turn them down?”

The director could not understand my sister’s choice.

I understood it perfectly.

On the morning of the Global Night Technology Summit, the foundation Mara and I created opened its first residence. It provided fortified blood, education, medical care, temporary housing, and legal representation for orphaned vampires, including those abused after adoption. No child would have to remain in a dangerous home merely because the alternative was the street. No girl would have to turn a rich boy into an escape route because every other door had been locked. The building stood three blocks from our first office. Mara insisted the distance was accidental. I knew she had chosen it so the children could visit without appointments. Before the summit, we toured the residence. One room held computers for schoolwork. Another held locked refrigerators with blood matched to different medical needs. A lawyer explained reporting procedures to the staff while two children argued over a game at the kitchen table. It was noisy, imperfect, and real."Milo's latest blood-core scan is stable

Years later, Mara and I took our company public. Before the listing ceremony, a news alert appeared on my phone. Sylvia had stabbed Lucian outside Ashcroft Group's headquarters. Police had arrested her. Lucian survived, badly injured.Mara closed the page after one glance."Aren't you going to ask whether I'm worried about him?""You aren't.""He claims to love me now.""I would rather see you take money from a loan shark than accept love from a rotten man."She pushed my speech into my hands."Six pauses are still wrong. Fix them before we go onstage.""Yes, class representative."The old Ashcroft cases reopened that year. Investigators found illegal blood farms, coerced donors, falsified deaths, and transactions routed through the family's clinics. Mr. Ashcroft could no longer bury the evidence. As heir, Lucian remained alive to answer for the debts attached to his name. The Millers lost their jobs after their treatment of Sylvia became public. Authorities investigated the confinemen

After leaving the hospital, I visited Sylvia.Lucian had ended their relationship. The Millers had not come once. The only visitors were the orphanage director and several children."Tessa paid our travel costs," the director explained. "She has supported the home for years. Because of her fund, Milo and Lily can receive blood-core treatment."Most children in vampire orphanages were never chosen. Some had disabilities. Others had illnesses or unstable blood-cores. Sylvia and I had been healthy and pretty enough to attract families. That alone was extraordinary luck. The director once told us every child in the home was our sibling. Sylvia never returned after adoption. Even when the Millers kept me poor, I volunteered. Once I had Ashcroft resources, I gave more. The children talked about "Tessa" until Sylvia began to cry. When they left, she asked, "You hate me, don't you? I only wanted a better life. What was wrong with that?""Wanting better wasn't wrong. Your method was.""Because

Jewelry arrived at my university apartment. His driver waited after lectures. Desserts I had mentioned once appeared on my desk.I returned the jewelry, dismissed the car, and threw away the food.Lucian was not falling in love because Sylvia had missed a line in her performance. He was discovering that the qualities he desired had not transferred with our households. Sylvia could recreate the scenery of my old life, but not the self-possession that scenery had forced me to build.By then, he hardly mattered.I spent three years in Ashcroft Group's investment division. I learned how capital moved through Greyhaven, how executives disguised risk, and how old families protected themselves with charitable foundations.Mara entered St. Aldwyn to study computer science. She built a workforce management platform that could identify payroll fraud and unsafe staffing patterns. I secured a two-million-dollar seed investment from Ashcroft Group. Mara built the product. I found clients and negoti

Ten minutes later, Lucian and a dozen boys blocked an empty corridor. The cameras had been damaged. One boy seized my hair and drove my head against the wall.Darkness burst behind my eyes. I kicked him between the legs, tore a bottle of blood wine from my bag, and smashed it against the railing. The jagged neck flashed in my hand."Come closer."Blood ran from my nose. I held Lucian's gaze."You had better kill me tonight. If I walk out with one breath left, I will drag you and House Ashcroft into hell."Nobody moved."Hypocrite," Lucian said. "You pretend to be generous while planning every step.""I truly helped Mara. Who have you helped, apart from the girl you want?"Sylvia hid near the far wall.I tapped the broken bottle against Lucian's collar."The reporters investigating school violence did not wander in by accident. I invited them. I knew Sylvia would complain after losing her place, and I preserved every log, receipt, and recording. Once they learned she lied, they started

Lucian's malice became quieter. At dinner, he set down a bowl of hot blood broth hard enough to splash my face. A housekeeper hurried for ice. Mrs. Ashcroft continued eating. Her husband merely told Lucian not to behave so crudely in front of staff.I pressed the ice to my cheek and studied the people around the table. Sylvia had spent years begging these parents to love her. They barely raised their own son. Why would they love a girl selected by a seer?Affection had no purchasing power here. Value did."I received my national examination results," I said. "I ranked first."Three heads lifted."St. Aldwyn University has offered me admission to its business program. Several networks want to interview my parents about education. I would also like to intern in Ashcroft Group's investment division."Mr. Ashcroft needed two seconds to calculate the benefit. Then he smiled."Of course. We should celebrate."Mrs. Ashcroft placed an arm around me for the interview. The photographs showed a p
