5. BETTER LIFE

last update publish date: 2026-07-16 19:49:10

Winter’s POV

The second time they locked me inside the room, they made sure I would never have another chance to escape.

The guards outside my door had doubled, and even the number of locks securing the door had increased.

The vase I had shattered was gone. So was every piece of furniture that could be broken apart or used as a weapon. Even the curtains had been replaced with shorter ones, leaving nothing I could tear into strips long enough to fashion a rope.

The room that had once resembled a bedchamber now felt like a prison.

I walked to the window. Iron bars had been fastened over it, sealing away what little freedom I had left.

Beyond them, the palace grounds glowed beneath the afternoon sun. Servants hurried across the courtyards carrying baskets of flowers, rolls of expensive fabric, and polished silver trays. Others moved through the gardens with arms full of decorations, each person rushing to prepare for the grand celebration.

It seemed the entire palace was preparing for a grand celebration.

I wondered what it was for.

Was it to commemorate the peace treaty with the Vampire Kingdom? Or was it for Lorena's betrothal to our Crown Prince?

I rested my forehead against the cold stone beside the window and closed my eyes.

Yesterday, I still believed I could escape. Today, I no longer knew what's left for me to fight for.

My father had chosen the kingdom over me. My sister’s future was built upon my sacrifice. Everyone had already decided my fate for me.

Perhaps leaving this kingdom wasn’t the worst thing that could happen to me. Perhaps the monsters I had feared all my life were no more monstrous than the people I had called my own.

Without thinking, my hand slipped into the pocket of my dress and retrieved the neatly folded handkerchief.

It was the only proof that the mysterious vampire had been real.

I had washed away the blood as best I could with nothing but soap and water, yet a faint crimson stain still lingered against the pristine white fabric.

My thumb brushed over the exquisitely embroidered eagle stitched into one corner.

I could still remember the cool touch of his hands as he wrapped the handkerchief around my wounded arm. More than that, I remembered his final words, still echoing faintly in my mind.

“Live a better life than the one they gave you.” That was what he had told me.

A better life... but where can I find it?

Perhaps there was no better life waiting for someone like me. Perhaps this was all I would ever be.

A sacrifice.

A bargaining chip.

A bride sent to die.

The sound of heavy locks clicking open pulled me from my thoughts.

I quickly slipped the handkerchief back into my pocket and rose to my feet as the door swung inward.

Two women stepped inside, each carrying a leather case with a measuring tape draped around her neck. They appeared to be in their forties, dressed in simple yet finely tailored gowns that distinguished them from ordinary palace servants.

“These are the royal seamstresses hired to make your wedding gown,” one of the guards announced from the doorway. His gaze hardened as it settled on me. “Do not try anything foolish. We will be stationed right outside this room.”

Before I could respond, he pulled the heavy door shut. The locks slid back into place one after another, leaving me alone with the two women.

The older woman let out a tired sigh before setting her leather case on the table. "Let's begin," she said. "Raise your arms."

I obeyed without a word.

The younger seamstress circled me, stretching the measuring tape across my shoulders before wrapping it around my waist. She scribbled each measurement onto a small parchment while the older woman sorted through pieces of white silk.

She clicked her tongue. “This should have been done days ago. How are we supposed to finish a royal wedding gown by tomorrow?"

My head snapped toward them. “…Tomorrow?”

Both women froze. The younger seamstress looked at me in surprise. “You… didn’t know?”

The older woman shot her a sharp look. “Mind your tongue.”

“But she’s the bride.”

The older woman hesitated before sighing in defeat. “Yes. The wedding is tomorrow.”

My fingers curled into my palms. “So soon…”

“The Vampire Crown Prince has already arrived,” the younger seamstress explained. “He’s been staying in the palace for several days while His Majesty finalized the peace treaty.”

My heartbeat faltered. “He… is here?”

“Of course.” She blinked. “Where else would he be? A royal wedding cannot take place without the groom.”

I stared at her.

“I thought…” My voice caught in my throat. “I thought I would be taken to the Vampire Kingdom first.”

The two women exchanged puzzled glances.

“No, my lady,” the older seamstress answered gently. “The wedding will be held here, in the Royal Palace.”

A thought quietly slipped into my mind. Could he… be the Crown Prince?

My fingers instinctively curled around the handkerchief hidden inside my pocket.

No. I quickly shook the thought away. It was impossible.

What were the chances that the one vampire I had met by accident would turn out to be the heir to an entire kingdom?

Besides, he couldn’t have been the Crown Prince. I don't think that he would be someone who would help me.

It's more likely for him to be one of the prince's royal guards... or perhaps a trusted knight carrying out some secret errand. That made far more sense.

Still, no matter how hard I tried to convince myself otherwise, one small, foolish part of me refused to let the thought go.

I still hoped that they were the same person, and that realization frightened me.

I had spent days dreading the man I was about to marry, imagining him as a monster whose face I would fear for the rest of my life.

But if… by some impossible twist of fate…

If the vampire who had saved me was the Crown Prince…

Then perhaps I could live a better life, and the man who will help me have that is the same man who wished me to have it.

Winter's POVNo one spoke. The throne room fell into a silence so profound that I could hear the faint crackle of the torches lining the stone walls. My heart pounded erratically inside my chest as his words echoed inside my head. 'She is my crown princess.'For a fleeting moment, I wondered if I had imagined them. My entire life, I had been treated as though I belonged to everyone except myself.Everyone had chosen my fate, to be the sacrificial bride to the vampires. My whole life, no one had ever asked what I wanted. Only he did.A murmur swept through the hall as the nobles exchanged bewildered glances. Some stared at Mavros in disbelief. Others turned toward me, as though seeing me for the first time.Even the minister looked momentarily speechless before he found his voice.“Your Highness,” he began carefully, “this matter concerns the safety of the Vampire Kingdom. Surely… such a decision should rest with you.”Every eye shifted back to Mavros. He remained composed upon his t

  • The Vampire's Human Bride   12. CROWN PRINCESS

Winter's POVI sat uneasily in my seat, unable to stop thinking about Lord Demir’s face—or the way he had looked at me as though he would kill me the moment he was given the chance. And soon, I would be living under the same roof as him, far from the only place I had ever known, with no one left to protect me if that day ever came.“Don’t worry about him,” Mavros whispered beside me, drawing my attention away from Demir. I blinked at him. I thought only I noticed the murderous look Demir had been directing at me. “He’ll calm down eventually,” Mavros said. “And even if he doesn’t, he cannot harm you now. You are the Crown Princess.”My heart skipped a beat.He was right.I was no longer the helpless girl who had been powerless to protect herself. For the first time in my life, I held a title powerful enough that no one would dare harm or ridicule me.Or at least... I hope it would. Then it was my father’s turn.I watched as he stepped into the center of the hall, every stride calm a

  • The Vampire's Human Bride   11. WEDDING GIFTS

Winter’s POVI returned to the banquet hall still feeling strangely detached, as though part of me had remained behind in that quiet room with Father.“Her Royal Highness has returned,” King Alaric proclaimed. “We shall now proceed with the presentation of gifts.”A ripple of excitement immediately swept through the hall. Nobles straightened in their seats, whispering eagerly among themselves, and several servants began moving toward the doors.Their reaction surprised me.“Are you all right?” Mavros asked as I took the seat beside him.I gave him a curt nod.His gaze lingered on me for a moment before he leaned closer.“This is usually the most entertaining part of the evening,” he murmured.I glanced at him.“They’ll spend the next hour trying to outdo one another,” he continued, his voice low enough that only I could hear. “Each gift will be more extravagant than the last, and every giver will pretend it was offered out of affection rather than ambition.”The corner of his mouth li

Winter’s POVI pulled my hand from his and stared at him as though he had lost his mind. “Father, we can’t just leave,” I blurted out.My eyes darted toward the door, worried that someone is out there is listening or that a guard would burst inside at any moment. “The palace is surrounded. There are guards everywhere, and they are watching me. With the vampires involved, we won’t even make it beyond the gardens before they catch us.”“They won’t catch us,” he said firmly. “I promise.”The certainty in his voice only made me stare at him harder. “I have men stationed throughout the palace who are still loyal to me. I have carefully planned everything. A carriage is already waiting out there for us."He reached for my arm. “Come with me. We don’t have much time.”The moment his hand closed around me, I pulled away and stepped back.He froze. For a heartbeat, surprise crossed his face. Then it faded, replaced by something heavier, something that settled deep in his eyes.“I’m sorry, Win

  • The Vampire's Human Bride   9. ESCAPE PLAN

Winter’s POVThe wedding ceremony ended in a chorus of applause. As the last blessing was spoken, the solemn atmosphere dissolved into celebration. Musicians filled the gardens with lively melodies while servants moved gracefully through the crowd, carrying gilded trays laden with delicacies and crystal goblets brimming with wine. The long banquet tables quickly filled with guests from both kingdoms. To my surprise, there was no invisible line separating humans from vampires. They sat beside one another as though they had been acquaintances for years.A human noble raised his goblet toward a vampire lord, and the vampire answered with a smile before clinking his glass against the other’s. Nearby, a group of ladies from the human court laughed openly at something one of the vampire noblewomen had said. Even the soldiers, once rigid during the ceremony, had begun exchanging stories over food and drink.Laughter echoed throughout the gardens. Warm, carefree, and genuine. If I hadn’t kn

Winter’s POVI gazed through the small window as the last traces of daylight disappeared from the sky. When the moon finally rose, a heavy sense of dread settled deeper into my chest.I wondered what the man I was about to marry was feeling at that very moment. Did he dread this marriage too? Did the thought of taking a human bride disgust him as much as the thought of marrying a vampire terrified me?I knew nothing about the vampire crown prince. Living in the human kingdom, I had never even heard rumors about him. He could be three hundred years old—or if it could make it worse, more than a thousand. The thought turned my stomach. I imagined what he might look like. Pale, wrinkled, bloodshot eyes dulled by centuries, wisps of hair clinging to a corpse that refused to die. It no longer mattered whether he dreaded this marriage or waited hungrily for me. The marriage itself is not what terrified me the most. It was what would happen after our marriage. I could imagine his cold fing
