Chapter 1

Author: Zoey
On Midsummer Eve, twice as many people as usual had crowded into the village.

Over a hundred young men and women clutched their tokens as they waited for the ceremony to begin.

I was the only one bundled up in a long cloth coat, covered from head to toe without a single gap.

"Nick!"

Henry Ritter, the guy next door who had always been like a big brother to me, walked up, sounding surprised.

"Why are you dressed like that? The whole village is saying today's the day you and Kat make your match official. Why aren't you wearing the wedding jacket your Grandma Agnes sewed for you by hand?"

I didn't want him to know I was allergic to rosewood, so I made up an excuse. "The long coat hides my token. I don't want anyone else to see it."

"Stubborn kid! Wait till you see Kat. Let's see if you can keep it hidden then!"

He dragged me to the front row.

The crowd was buzzing.

Kat spotted me right away, but she didn't walk toward me. Instead, she stopped right in front of Jason Bates.

The two of them ran into each other every single day, yet the moment their eyes met now, they both blushed at the same time.

"Kat, do you want to see my token?" Jason asked. He was dressed in a bright red wedding jacket and gazed at Kat with deep affection. "Or... or I could look at yours. That works too."

Everyone in the village froze in place, every head turning toward Kat.

Anyone could look at a token, of course.

But an open invitation like this meant, nine times out of ten, that someone was about to declare their feelings in front of everyone.

"Sure! In fact, I'll show you mine first!"

Without the slightest hesitation, Kat opened her hand to reveal the token in her palm.

Everyone present held their breath.

By the understanding we'd reached years ago, Kat should have come to me first.

Ever since we were little, the whole village had taken it for granted that we were a match made in heaven.

But now she'd gone straight to Jason, which meant the match she wanted today wasn't with me.

"It's a wild rose carving! Kat and Jason have matching carvings! Their hearts are one, and they may set a date to marry!"

Elder Dennis Statham, the clan elder in charge of verifying the tokens, stroked his white beard as he made the announcement loud and clear.

The entire crowd stared, dumbfounded.

Henry was the first to bristle. "Kat! How could you show Jason your token? You and Nick had an agreement. Where does this leave him?"

Only then did Kat spare me a backward glance. "Aren't tokens meant to be shown to people? Am I supposed to hide mine away and try to guess who my match is?"

"But you and Nick grew up together. Everyone in the village has seen what you two have. Even if you wanted to show someone, it should have been him first!"

Jason, who had been standing quietly off to the side, spoke up timidly, "Henry's right. Kat, maybe you should just forget about me.

"In my situation, I don't deserve to be matched with anyone. I just thought the ceremony looked fun. I'm sorry..."

With that, he deliberately forced a strained, lonely smile.

Henry's eyes instantly went red with anger. "Jason, quit the act! You're Kat's brother-in-law, and ever since her sister died, you've been clinging to her.

"You get a headache, you go to Kat. Your clothes rip, you go to Kat. Even for the tiniest household chores, you go to Kat. Any idiot can see what you're scheming!"

"Enough!"

Kat snapped at Henry and stepped in front of Jason. "Matching tokens are fate. Jason's already had it hard enough living alone in this village. You're both men. Why give him such a hard time?"

"You!"

Henry started forward again, but I grabbed him.

"Kat's right. Whose token matches whose is up to fate. Jason lost his wife, but that doesn't mean he's lost the right to look for love."

"But you..."

I signaled for Henry to stop.

My unusual calm stunned everyone.

Especially Kat.

She knew I was madly in love with her.

Once, while hunting for wild mushrooms for her, I'd nearly been eaten by a starving wolf.

The bite it left on my calf was still a scar to this day.

Henry thought I'd be heartbroken, too.

But I wasn't.

"Nick!"

I turned to go find my own match, but Kat called after me.

Gripping a rose carving identical to mine, she gritted her teeth and jabbed it hard into the back of her hand.

Being entered into the family register was a big deal in our village. Only a first marriage, completed with the full set of clan rituals, qualified someone to be recorded.Jason was marrying for the second time, so he didn't meet the requirements at all.Jason dropped all pretense. He threw a fit at the Michielsen house, smashing everything of value onto the floor. He pointed at Kat's parents and screamed, "You used me and tossed me aside! May you rot for it!"Ever since he married Leah, people in the village had been whispering about him behind his back. For an ordinary newlywed couple, all it took was paying respects at the clan hall to be entered into the register. It was the name and dignity the clan granted every married couple. But the Michielsens had put it off again and again. Now, after he'd spent his youth on two of their daughters, he still didn't have an official place. When Kat heard Jason was making a scene, all her pent-up anger exploded at once. She stepped up a

"You're the one who went back on your word first, having a child with Jason behind my back. Kat, I'm grateful, and at the same time, I'm disgusted, too."Grateful that the day before Midsummer Eve, I overheard you talking with your grandma. Disgusted that all these years, my sincerity was wasted on you. Every time I think about you kissing me with the same mouth you kissed Jason with, I get so sick I can't even eat."Do you know what I thought the day I saw your child with Jason? I hated myself for being so blind!"Kat's hand froze in midair. Tears welled in her eyes until, in the end, she couldn't hold them back. "So what? You're really marrying someone else?""Yes! And it's someone I love and admire. We understand each other perfectly, and we've decided to spend our lives together. You should go!"There was a sharp crack. The rosewood carving in Kat's hand snapped in two.Three years ago, before our coming-of-age ceremony, Kat had already been searching the mountains far and w

Kat still wanted to step forward and explain, but Henry simply tossed down the broken half of the rosewood carving. The dull thud landed like a blow on Kat's heart. In that moment, regret, bone-deep pain, and grief swept through her entire body.Three days later, Lizzie and I came down the mountain without a hitch. My father planned to throw a grand banquet for us.The night before the banquet, Kat showed up at our door again. She knelt right in front of our house.Henry was so angry he wanted to go out and stop her, but my father held him back.Dad asked me, "Do you want to settle this face to face? Give your old self some closure?"I shook my head. "It's come to this. We're done. Everything she did is right there for everyone to see. There's no need to say anything more."But Kat refused to leave no matter what, insisting on seeing me so we could talk it out.So it wouldn't ruin the next day's banquet, and to keep the villagers from gathering around to gossip, I had no cho

The tenderness on Jason's face froze. The village had always had a rule: when a man and woman formally married, whether the bride joined the groom's family or the groom married into hers, the new spouse was entered into the family register.Only then were they officially accepted by the clan.Back when he married into Leah's family, the Michielsens kept putting it off, using the fact that the couple had no children yet as an excuse. After Leah died, he lost any right to it at all.Now that he was with Kat and had given her Haven, he thought he could finally have his name entered into the register as was his due.He never expected Kat to go back on her word on the spot."But if a married couple in this village isn't in the register, they become a laughingstock. I've stayed by your side. This is the dignity you owe me."Kat scoffed, looking at the man in front of her with a sudden coldness and distance in her eyes. "Giving you a place here was already an exception. Back then, y

Kat's hand froze around her wine glass.A panic she had never felt before crept visibly across her face. But only a moment later, she went right back to lying to herself. "Impossible. Nick loves me! He'd never marry anyone else! You must have seen wrong."She pushed the flicker of doubt from her eyes and decided to finish the betrothal ceremony with Jason.Once it was over, she'd explain things to me alone and make it up to me.But I had already gone up the mountain with someone else.Wildflowers bloomed across the hillsides, and the mountain path wound and twisted. The scenery around us matched the wedding I'd once dreamed of perfectly.Henry, my father, and a crowd of relatives and friends escorted us up the mountain.Once I walked this path, I'd be turning the page for good and spending the rest of my life with the one meant for me."Nick, go on ahead and don't worry. We'll look after things at home. If Kat dares to come and make a scene, I'll run her off with the woodsman

My chest suddenly felt tight.Jason had married into the Michielsen family, but less than a year later, Kat's sister, Leah Michielsen, died. The two of them hadn't even left behind a child.Meanwhile, back when Kat got food poisoning, I was the one who risked my life to get her through a snowstorm to the hospital. She owed me a real debt for that, yet I didn't even deserve to be called someone who'd done the family a service."My mom doesn't mean anything by it."Kat walked over. "She just wants Jason to have a proper place in the Michielsen family. The ceremony was kept simple. Can't you see that?"I looked around the courtyard. "Wedding decorations hanging high, silk ribbons flying everywhere, even the wedding hearts on the windows are stamped in gold foil. This is what you call keeping it simple?"Kat's face stiffened for a moment. "What's that supposed to mean?""Nothing.""Nick, you've gone too far."She rubbed her temples. "It's always like this with you. Every single t
