The fall of the Ashbore Empire, the mighty conqueror of the Eastern Kingdoms whose dominion had once extended as far as the Northern Continent.

The empire that had once ruled vast stretches of the known world eventually crumbled, leaving behind territories that would become the foundations of new powers.

In the centuries that followed, ambitious nobles rose to prominence, establishing their authority over conquered lands and laying the groundwork for the kingdoms that would shape the continent’s future.

From the ruins of the fallen empire emerged nine kingdoms Eldoria, Valtherion, Aurevane, Drakemore, Westervale, Ravencrest, Frosthelm, Lysandria, and Thornwick.

Each established its own royal authority, and their kings sought the loyalty of their subjects to maintain order, defend their borders, and protect their territories from those who might attempt to seize them but beneath the appearance of stability, rivalries over land, wealth, and political influence continued to threaten the fragile balance between the kingdoms.

Lord Richard, Amelia’s father, was one such nobleman whose family had built its fortune upon conquest and ambition. His ancestor, the first Lord, had been among the lords of Thornwick who successfully seized the vast Western territories.

In the generations that followed, the Lords of Thornwick participated in dozens of wars, fighting relentlessly to secure fertile lands and acquire tens of thousands of serfs to cultivate them.

These conquests brought the family extraordinary wealth and influence, allowing its members to strengthen their hold over their vast domain and establish themselves among the most powerful nobles of the realm.

However, forty years earlier, the nine kingdoms had signed a truce after the growing number of monsters roaming the land began to threaten their people and territories with the danger spreading beyond individual borders, the rulers could no longer afford to devote all their strength to fighting one another.

The agreement required several territorial disputes to be settled, and among its terms was the return of the Western territories that Thornwick had annexed from Eldoria.

Unwilling to surrender half his domain and relinquish lands that had brought his family generations of prosperity, the Lord of Thornwick desperately sought a way to preserve his holdings without directly defying the agreement.

After considerable thought, he devised a solution that would strengthen his claim to the territory through an alliance with the fallen imperial dynasty.

If he could marry a princess descended from the old Ashbore Empire, he believed the royal blood flowing through her veins would lend greater legitimacy to his rule and provide him with a powerful argument against those who wished to strip him of his lands.

It was a calculated decision, but one that promised to protect everything his ancestors had fought to obtain.

In this endeavor, the lord succeeded. He found Liana, a maiden descended from the fallen imperial family, and took her as his wife.

She was Amelia’s mother, a beautiful and virtuous woman known for her dutiful and gentle nature. Liana was docile, obedient, and accustomed to fulfilling the expectations placed upon her, but her greatest value in the eyes of her husband lay in her ancestry.

She was a scion of the great House of Ashbore, the imperial bloodline that had once ruled all the lands beneath the sun and with Liana beside him, the Lord of Thornwick secured the royal connection he desired and neatly extricated himself from the territorial disputes that threatened his inheritance, much to his satisfaction.

His triumph, however, did not spare him from another concern that had troubled noblemen for generations: the matter of succession and like every lord who possessed a title, an extensive estate, and a powerful family name to preserve, he longed for a son who could inherit his lands, occupy his castle, and continue the legacy his ancestors had built.

To him, a male heir was not merely a child but the continuation of his bloodline and the guarantee that his authority would endure beyond his own lifetime yet seven years passed after his marriage to Liana, and she had still failed to give him the son he so desperately desired.

Every pregnancy ended in miscarriage, leaving the couple without a living child and the lord increasingly consumed by frustration.

Determined to overcome the problem, he devoted himself to finding a solution, exhausting every possibility he could think of.

He enlisted the assistance of high-ranking clerics, hoping their prayers and sacred rites might bring him the blessing he sought, and even turned to sorcerers in the desperate hope that their abilities could accomplish what ordinary efforts had failed to achieve.

He spared neither effort nor expense in his attempts to secure a healthy heir, but every endeavor brought him the same bitter disappointment.

A decade passed before his prayers were finally answered, and Liana gave birth to a healthy child.

For a brief moment, the long-awaited birth seemed to promise an end to his troubles, but his hopes were shattered when he discovered that the child was a girl.

Rather than welcoming his daughter with gratitude for her safe arrival, the lord became despondent, unable to conceal his disappointment that the child he had waited so many years to receive was not a son.

By the time the girl had reached two or three years of age, his frustration had hardened into a violent resentment that would shape the rest of her life.

The child was not only useless in his eyes, but she also had a stutter, a condition he regarded as yet another imperfection that made her unfit to represent his family.

Whatever faint expectations he had once entertained for his eldest daughter gradually disappeared, leaving behind only contempt and bitterness.

He had hoped to marry her to a prince of Thornwick and use the union to secure an heir through their descendants, thereby preserving the family’s influence for another generation.

However, he could not bring himself to accept the possibility of a child with a speech impediment becoming the mother of his future successor.

It was his unwavering belief that only a healthy, flawless male child could uphold the honor of the Whitmore name and preserve the legacy attached to it.

In his eyes, appearances, bloodlines, and the continuation of his authority mattered far more than affection or the well-being of his own children.

His eldest daughter’s condition became a source of shame, and rather than seeing her as a child who needed understanding, he regarded her as an obstacle standing between him and the future he had envisioned.

Liana never succeeded in giving him a male heir. The repeated cycle of pregnancies and miscarriages had gradually worn down her strength, and the toll on her body eventually proved fatal.

She died without bearing the son her husband had spent so many years longing for, leaving Amelia without a mother and the lord without the heir he believed essential to his family’s survival.

Still unwilling to abandon his desire for a successor who carried the royal blood of the Ashbore imperial family, the lord wasted little time before marrying one of Liana’s cousins.

He hoped that another woman from the same distinguished lineage might finally give him the son he needed, allowing him to preserve both his inheritance and the royal connection that had helped protect his territorial claims. His expectations were once again disappointed when his second wife died of an illness, leaving behind only a daughter.

Amelia immediately looked up, her heart hammering as she feared the ceiling might come crashing down upon her. Before she could gather her thoughts, an enormous eye was staring directly at her through the window, its blue surface horribly bloodshot and so unnaturally large that Amelia could barely comprehend what she was seeing.A sc

Amelia looked at him as if he had suddenly grown another head. She could not believe her ears, did he genuinely want her to be his wife? Or was he lying for the sake of some ulterior motive? Perhaps he was mocking her, thinking that she had yet to learn of his engagement to the princess.Increasingly distressing thoughts tore through her mind. “I may be a man of low birth, but I hold the vows of marriage sacred,” Ryder snapped in frustration.“It astounds me that the daughter of a lord would show such contempt for our vows.”“C-Contempt?”“If not contempt, then what is it? You married me, yet you’ve disregarded my existence all this time but do not expect me to tolerate that any longer.”Dismayed, Amelia stared at him. How could he accuse her of such a thing? He was the one who had left without a word the morning after their wedding!“I’ve…I’ve never disregarded y-you! You’re th-the one who…who…”“Enough! As my wife, you should have left for my estate immediately after our wedding nig

Was this truly the same man who had showered her with blistering remarks and kisses before marching out of her father’s castle and dragging her along with him? The memory felt almost impossible to reconcile with the composed man now sitting beside her.Her father’s words suddenly returned to her. "King Adrian has offered him the princess’s hand in marriage, and he will not let such an opportunity slip by!"Lord Richard had been the one to drive those words into Amelia’s mind, repeating them until she had come to accept them as an unavoidable truth yet her father had not been the only person who assumed Ryd
