Chapter 3

Author: Sweet Beet
"I did nothing wrong, and I will not apologize.

"Ines Sutherland, I will say this one last time. I want a divorce."

Ines's face turned cold at once.

"Arthur, I am giving you a way out. Don't be an ingrate."

I stared at her coldly.

"Say whatever you want. I am getting this divorce."

Marcus came over and held Ines's arm, speaking gently.

"Ines, Arthur has always been spoiled by you. He is only using divorce to threaten you. You should coax him a little."

Ines glared at me.

"I really have spoiled you too much. That is why you have become so reckless. You want a divorce? Fine. Bring me the papers and see whether I sign them."

I had rushed over so quickly that I had not brought the divorce agreement.

"Wait here. I will go back and get it now."

Ines scoffed.

"I knew you would not dare. Stop making excuses.

"Arthur, I have known you for seven years. I know you too well. You cannot leave me."

I did not waste another word on her. I turned and left.

Later, when I slapped the divorce agreement in her face, I would see whether she still had so much to say.

Because I had lost one shoe, the path down the hill was rough. Stones and thorns cut the sole and top of my foot. At the same time, a heavy pain began to sink through my stomach.

In the past, to help Ines secure contracts, I had drunk with clients until I bled internally more than once. That left me with a serious stomach condition.

I stopped, clutching my stomach as the pain grew worse and cold sweat broke across my skin.

Just as I was about to call for help, Ines came slowly down the hill with Marcus and the others.

I spoke weakly.

"Ines, my stomach hurts. Take me to the hospital..."

Marcus cut me off.

"Arthur, there is no shame in a man lowering his head and admitting he was wrong. Why make so many excuses?"

Ines lifted her chin, arrogant as ever.

"Arthur, if you apologize to me and Marcus now and promise not to be jealous over nothing again, I will forgive you this once."

My face was pale, my voice thin.

"My stomach... really hurts... take me to the hospital..."

Ines hesitated and seemed about to walk toward me.

But Marcus stretched out his hand to stop her and whispered a few words in her ear.

Ines's expression turned stern.

"Marcus is right. If I forgive you this easily, who knows whether you will make an even bigger scene next time."

"Consider today a lesson. Reflect on yourself."

After that, Ines stepped past me and went down the hill.

I watched her figure grow farther away, my heart desolate.

A self-mocking smile pulled at my lips until the tears fell.

Was this the woman I had abandoned everything to marry?

Arthur Weber, you really were blind.

An hour later, the ambulance arrived.

By then, I was almost unconscious from pain. The blood I vomited had stained a large patch of my shirt red.

The doctors diagnosed a ruptured esophageal and gastric varix with massive bleeding and rushed me into emergency surgery.

Before the surgery, the doctor used my phone to call Ines so she could sign the consent form.

But after only a few words, Ines's disdainful voice came through the line.

"How much did Arthur pay you to act in this little drama with him?"

The doctor said seriously, "Ms. Sutherland, this is Brookhaven General Hospital. Your husband is in critical condition. Please come to the hospital and sign immediately."

"Tell Arthur to stop playing tricks. If he wants me to forgive him, he should come apologize to me and Marcus."

Then she hung up.

When the doctor called again, she rejected the call.

The doctors and nurses in the hospital looked at me with pity as I lay on the bed.

I forced out a breath and said, "Doctor, let me sign it myself. I can write a waiver. Whatever happens, I will bear the responsibility."

They could not reach Ines, and my condition was urgent. The doctors had no better option, so they agreed to let me sign.

As I lay on the operating table and the anesthesia entered my body, one tear slipped from the corner of my eye.

Ines Sutherland, this is the last tear I will ever shed for you.

From now on, we go our separate ways. We have nothing to do with each other.

Three days later, once my body recovered a little, I checked myself out of the hospital.

Then I called a courier and had the hospitalization record and divorce agreement delivered to Ines.

After that, I took a cab straight to Brookhaven Airport and bought a ticket back to Harbor City.

The moment I boarded the plane, Ines's calls came in one after another.

Less than a minute after I sent the message, Marcus replied."Arthur Weber, just wait. I will not let your scheme succeed. You will never come back."Seeing that message, I felt much calmer.I understood Marcus. On the surface, he looked obedient, gentle, and dependent, but underneath he was full of poison.Ines was now the tree he depended on to survive. He would never let go easily.Sure enough, early the next morning, Marcus and Ines's mother rushed over from Brookhaven.Marcus looked shocked when he saw Ines looking so haggard."Ines, what happened to your face? Did someone hit you? Was it Arthur...?"He covered his mouth in alarm."How could he do something so disrespectful?"Ines's mother also said in distress, "Ines, stop being foolish. Arthur Weber does not deserve to be your husband."Come home with us now. From now on, you and Marcus are the real family."Ines frowned at the two of them."Mom, do not say that Marcus and I are family anymore. Do not bring up the a

"My family does not welcome you. If you have something to say, say it outside."Ines looked sincere."Arthur, I came all this way. I should at least go in and greet your parents. Otherwise, it would be rude."I looked at her coldly."Ines, they are my parents. They have nothing to do with you. We are getting divorced."Ines looked as if she did not believe me."Arthur, I know you are speaking out of anger. You love me so much. How could you really bear to divorce me? I came this time because there is something else I want to ask you."She took the hospital record from her bag."What is this? Were you really hospitalized for stomach bleeding?"My voice was cold as I accused her."Yes. Because you tricked me into thinking you had been bitten by a snake on the hill, I ran there without even eating breakfast. That triggered my stomach condition."When we were coming down the hill, I asked you for help. I asked you to take me to the hospital, but you left me there."You almost k

That lunch was the sweetest, most satisfying meal I had eaten in three years.Harbor City food leaned a little sweet, while Brookhaven food was heavy and spicy. After I followed Ines to Brookhaven, I could not get used to the local food. At first, Ines felt sorry for me and learned online how to make the dishes from my hometown. But when my mother-in-law saw it, she felt bad for her daughter and said Ines was already working hard enough to earn money. Since I had moved into their family, I should be the one doing the housework.I did not want Ines stuck in the middle, and I did not want my mother-in-law to look down on me. So I learned to cook and clean. After three years, I had gone from a pampered young man who had never touched housework to someone who could cook and manage a home well. But Ines took it more and more for granted. She even made me cook for Marcus.Once a person learns to give way, others demand that he give way in everything.Fortunately, those days were over

Ines suddenly remembered the call from a week ago. The caller had said he was a doctor from Brookhaven General and that Arthur's condition was critical. At the time, she had thought I had hired someone to act so she would give in first.Could the hospital stay have been real? Could the surgery for internal bleeding have been real too?"No. I do not believe it!"Ines ran out like a madwoman and rushed to Brookhaven General as fast as she could. She asked the staff in the inpatient department whether there had been a patient named Arthur Weber.A nurse nearby heard the name and said, "Arthur Weber? I remember him. About a week ago, he was brought in with massive stomach bleeding."The attending doctor called his wife to come sign, but she did not believe him and hung up."In the end, Arthur had to sign his own consent form and waiver. Only then did the doctor operate."Ines's knees went weak, and she nearly fell."Where is Arthur? Where is he now?"The nurse replied, "He check

Ines kept calling until the mechanical voice told her the phone had been turned off.She shoved the phone into her pocket and turned to leave.Marcus immediately stepped forward and blocked her."Ines, where are you going?"Ines's voice was panicked. She clutched the two documents in her hand."I need to find Arthur and ask him what this hospitalization record means."And this divorce agreement. I absolutely do not agree."A vicious glint flashed through Marcus's eyes, but he quickly returned to his gentle expression and held her back with soothing words."That hospital record has to be fake. Arthur is only trying to make you give in first."Ines, if you go looking for him now, you will have fallen into his trap. From now on, he will only use this to control you even more."Ines's panic eased slightly, but she still sounded uneasy."Really? The medical record is fake?"Marcus said firmly, "Of course it is fake."Think about it. When Arthur left that day, he was full of ene
