Chapter 1: The Message Before Midnight
AMARA
In twelve hours, I would become Mrs. Adrian Cole.
I had imagined this moment a thousand times. The white dress, the flowers, the music, and the handsome man waiting at the altar.
What I hadn’t imagined was discovering that the man I loved might be connected to my best friend’s death.
But that came later.
At ten o’clock that evening, I was still hopelessly in love.
“You’re staring again,” Adrian said.
I smiled at his reflection in the bedroom mirror.
“Am I not allowed to admire my future husband?”
He approached me from behind, slipping his arms around my waist.
“Admire all you want, sweetheart. Tomorrow, I’m officially yours.”
His lips brushed my neck, sending a familiar shiver down my spine.
“Adrian!” I laughed. “You’re going to ruin my makeup.”
“Then stop looking so beautiful.”
I turned in his arms.
At thirty-four, Adrian Cole was everything women whispered about. Tall, devastatingly handsome, and wealthy enough to own half the city’s skyline.
But it wasn’t his money that made me fall in love.
It was the little things.
The way he remembered how I liked my coffee. How he called every afternoon just to hear my voice. How he held me whenever nightmares about my past returned.
For two years, Adrian had been my safe place.
“Are you nervous?” he asked.
“About marrying you?”
He nodded.
“Terrified,” I teased.
He placed a hand dramatically over his chest.
“That hurts.”
I laughed.
Then his expression softened.
“Amara, look at me.”
I did.
“Whatever happens tomorrow, whatever happens after, promise me you’ll remember that I love you.”
Something about his seriousness unsettled me.
“Why are you talking like that?”
He hesitated.
“Because sometimes love isn’t enough to protect the people we care about.”
Before I could ask what he meant, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His smile disappeared.
“Who is it?” I asked.
“Just business.”
“At this hour?”
“Unfortunately.”
He declined the call, but it rang again immediately.
Adrian kissed my forehead.
“I need to take this. I’ll be right back.”
I watched him leave.
For some reason, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
By eleven thirty, Adrian still hadn’t returned.
I had changed into my pajamas and climbed into bed, scrolling through messages from my bridesmaids.
My mother had sent a voice note reminding me to pray before sleeping.
My maid of honor, Jasmine, had threatened to drag me down the aisle herself if I arrived late.
I laughed.
Tomorrow was going to be perfect.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown Number: Are you alone?
I frowned.
Who is this?
The reply came immediately.
Someone who knows what your fiancé did.
My smile faded.
Excuse me?
Don’t marry Adrian Cole.
I sat upright.
My first thought was that someone was playing a cruel prank.
Adrian was a wealthy man. Wealth attracted enemies, jealous ex-girlfriends, and people desperate for attention.
If this is some kind of joke, it isn’t funny.
Three dots appeared.
Then a new message.
Ask him what happened five years ago.
My stomach tightened.
Five years ago?
That was before Adrian and I met.
What are you talking about?
A photograph arrived.
Adrian stood outside an expensive restaurant wearing a charcoal-gray suit. Beside him was a beautiful woman in a red dress.
His arm was wrapped around her waist.
He was smiling at her.
Not the polite smile he gave strangers.
The smile he reserved for someone he loved.
My chest tightened.
I zoomed in.
The woman’s face was partially turned away, but something about her looked familiar.
Her long black hair.
Her high cheekbones.
The small beauty mark above her upper lip.
No.
Impossible.
I enlarged the photograph again.
My fingers began trembling.
I knew that woman.
I had known her since we were seven years old.
We shared lunchboxes, secrets, birthday cakes, and dreams of becoming successful women.
Her name was Vanessa Reed.
My childhood best friend.
And five years ago, I stood beside her coffin while her mother cried so hard she collapsed.
Vanessa was dead.
I had attended her funeral.
I stared at the photograph until my vision blurred.
Where did you get this? I typed.
No response.
Who are you?
Still nothing.
Then another message appeared.
You deserve to know the truth, Amara.
I jumped out of bed.
“Adrian!”
Silence.
I hurried down the hallway toward his study.
The door was closed.
I reached for the handle.
Locked.
Adrian never locked his study when we were home together.
I raised my hand to knock.
Then I heard his voice.
Low.
Furious.
“I warned you not to contact her.”
I froze.
There was a pause.
Then Adrian spoke again.
“She knows nothing about Vanessa. And that’s exactly how it’s going to stay.”
My heart stopped.
Vanessa?
Why was Adrian talking about Vanessa?
My phone vibrated in my trembling hand.
One final message illuminated the screen.
Vanessa didn’t die five years ago, Amara.
I couldn’t breathe.
Then another message arrived.
She’s alive.
A photograph followed.
It showed a woman standing outside our apartment building.
The timestamp read 11:47 p.m.
Tonight.
I zoomed in on her face.
Vanessa.
Older, thinner, but unmistakably Vanessa.
Before I could move, the study door clicked open.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
His eyes dropped to my phone.
Then he looked at my face.
“Amara,” he whispered.
For the first time since I’d known him, my fiancé looked afraid.
“Who sent you that picture?”
I stepped backward.
“Adrian… why is my dead best friend standing outside our building?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached past me and locked the hallway door.
“Sweetheart,” he said quietly, “whatever you do, don’t let her inside.”
Chapter 10: The Brother I Once LovedAMARA“Son, aren’t you going to introduce me to your sister?”The room went silent.I looked at Ethan. Then at the Chairman.“No.”The word escaped my lips before I could stop it.“No, that’s impossible.”The Chairman smiled.“Denial. Your mother’s favorite defense.”“Shut up!” Evelyn screamed.I had never heard my mother speak like that.Ethan stood motionless beside me.“You’re lying,” he said. The Chairman laughed.“Am I, Nathaniel?”Ethan’s face drained of color.Nathaniel?I stepped backward.“Who is Nathaniel?”The Chairman pointed at Ethan.“Your precious Ethan Blackwood. Another borrowed name.”My knees weakened. Not again.First Adrian. Now Ethan. Was there a single person in my life whose identity was real?“Ethan?” I whispered. He couldn’t meet my eyes.“Amara, please listen.”“Are you his son?”A terrible silence followed.“I was raised as his son.”My chest tightened.“That’s not what I asked.”“I don’t know if we’re related.”The Chai
Chapter 9: The Mother Who Knew EverythingAMARA“My mother is missing?”I stared at Ethan, waiting for him to laugh. To tell me there had been a misunderstanding. He didn’t.“Her driver found her car abandoned two streets from the hotel.”My heart began pounding.“Was there blood?”“No.”“Her handbag? Her phone?”“Both were inside.”I turned toward Gabriel.“You knew this would happen.”“Amara—”“YOU KNEW!”He reached for me, but I pushed his hand away.“First my father. Now my mother. How many people have to disappear before you tell me the truth?”His face twisted with pain.“I would never hurt your family.”“You killed a man!”“A man who murdered your father!”“And I’m supposed to believe you?”Silence. Then Vanessa spoke.“Your mother isn’t as innocent as you think.”I turned slowly.“What did you say?”She folded her arms.“Ask her what she did the night your father died.”I stepped toward her.“If anything happens to my mother, Vanessa, I swear—”“Threatening me won’t change wha
Chapter 8: The Man Behind the NameAMARA“Gabriel.”I repeated the name slowly.Adrian stood before me, his face drained of color.“That’s my real name,” he whispered.I stared at him.“Your real name?”He nodded.“Gabriel Alexander.”A bitter laugh escaped my lips.“Wonderful. I’ve been sleeping beside a man whose name I don’t even know.”“Amara, please—”“Who is Adrian Cole?”He looked away.“Someone who died twelve years ago.”My stomach dropped. Before I could respond, another gunshot echoed from the ballroom.Ethan grabbed my arm.“We need to move. Now!”Vanessa rushed toward the door, but Adrian blocked her.“Nobody leaves until we know who’s downstairs.”“You’re not in charge anymore, Gabriel,” she snapped. The name sounded strange coming from her lips.Familiar.Almost intimate.I looked between them.“How long have you known his real identity?”Vanessa smiled.“Long enough to know he isn’t the man you think he is.”⸻Ethan led us through a private corridor behind the bridal s
Chapter 7: The Bride Who Stole My WeddingAMARATHE WEDDING WILL GO ON. WITH OR WITHOUT YOU.I stared at Vanessa’s message until the words blurred. My wedding dress. My engagement ring.My fiancé.She had taken everything.“Ethan, take me to the wedding venue.”He looked up from his laptop.“Absolutely not.”I grabbed my handbag.“Then give me your car keys.”“Amara, Vanessa is setting a trap.”“She’s wearing my wedding dress!”“And that’s exactly why she wants you there.”I turned toward him.“Six years ago, you disappeared without giving me a choice. Don’t make that mistake again.”His expression changed. For a moment, I regretted my words. Then he picked up his keys.“Fine. But I’m coming with you.”The drive to the Grand Monarch Hotel felt endless. My phone kept vibrating.Messages from bridesmaids.Missed calls from my mother.Photographs of flowers, champagne, and smiling guests.Nobody knew my wedding had become a nightmare. Then Jasmine called.“Amara! Where are you?”“I’m on
Chapter 6: The Woman With My IdentityAMARA“Biological match confirmed.”I read the words again. And again. On Ethan’s security monitor, Vanessa stood inside an underground vault wearing a hospital bracelet bearing my name.“That’s impossible,” I whispered.Ethan was already typing furiously.“She’s using your identity to access the system.”“But you said it needed my biological sample.”“It does.”“Then how is she doing it?”He stopped typing. That frightened me more than anything.“Ethan?”He looked at me.“There’s something about your father’s research I haven’t told you.”I laughed bitterly.“Of course there is. Apparently, everyone in my life has a secret.”“Amara, listen—”“No. You listen.”I stepped closer.“I’ve been lied to by my fiancé, manipulated by my supposedly dead best friend, and dragged into a conspiracy I never knew existed.”My voice trembled.“But I’m done being the woman everyone thinks they can control.”Ethan stared at me.Then, unexpectedly, he smiled.“What?
Chapter 5: The Secret in My BloodAMARA“Your father wasn’t protecting you from The Web. He was protecting The Web from you.”I stared at Ethan.“That doesn’t make any sense.”“It will.”“Then explain it!”He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.“Your father left something behind, Amara. Something only you can access.”I looked down at the silver key Adrian had given me.“Is this what everyone wants?”Ethan glanced at it.His expression changed.“Where did you get that?”“Adrian.”He cursed under his breath.“Of course he gave it to you.”“What does it open?”“A safe-deposit box.”“Where?”“Your father’s old bank.”I turned toward him.“Then take me there.”“Not tonight.”“Ethan!”“Amara, someone just tried to shoot you. You’re exhausted, and the entire city is looking for us.”I folded my arms.“Six years apart, and you’re still telling me what to do.”His lips curved slightly.“And you’re still refusing to listen.”For one brief moment, we were twenty-two again. Before the hear
