Chapter 1

The day Lewis Chase came back, he didn’t even have time to change out of his coat before rushing straight to find me. He fell to his knees in front of me, just like he used to, taking my hand in his. His expression was uneasy and tense.

“Darling… are you still angry?”

I looked down at him. That face was still as striking and cold as ever. He carried the natural authority of a man born to power, the kind of presence that made everyone in Napels afraid of him; everyone except me, because there was a time when he loved me like I was the center of his world.

On my eighteenth birthday, I said I loved watching fireworks by the sea. The very next night, he shut down an entire private coastline just to set off a two-hour-long firework display for me alone.

When I had a high fever of a hundred and two degrees, he cancelled every meeting and stayed by my bedside for two full days. When someone at a banquet mocked my background, that person disappeared from Napels the next day without a trace. Everyone said Lewis valued me more than his own life, but at some point, things changed.

After Quinn Turner returned from abroad, Lewis’s attention never seemed to leave her again. She mentioned she wanted sweets from the east side of the city, and he abandoned a banquet he was supposed to attend with me. She said she was afraid of staying alone in a hotel, and he drove there at two in the morning to keep her company.

When I finally confronted him, all I got was his tired, resigned explanation.

“I promised her parents I would take care of her for life. Eve, her parents are gone. Just let her have this, could you?”

He forgot that I, too, was an orphan and never had parents to rely on either. So, when Quinn altered my wedding dress, took the main diamond from my engagement ring, and left on a cruise with Lewis, I finally gave up. I stopped fighting for his love with her, and I stopped wanting him.

I slowly pulled my hand away, my voice unusually calm. “I’m not angry anymore.”

Lewis froze for a second before quickly flashing me a smile. “Darling, that’s good. Quinn doesn’t mean any harm. She’s just spoiled. She thought the blue diamond was beautiful, so she acted on impulse… Same with the dress too. She just thought it would be fun to adjust it. She wasn’t targeting you.”

He spoke seriously, as if all of it were nothing more than harmless childish mistakes.

If this were the past, I would’ve questioned him with tears in my eyes, asking him why my wedding could be treated like a joke, or why my ring could be taken apart, and he could dismiss it as “an impulse.” Now, I simply nodded calmly.

“I know.”

The smile on Lewis’s face deepened.

“Eve, you’ve finally matured.” He sat down beside me and said with much relief, “Oh, and about Quinn… She’s run into some trouble with her family lately, and she doesn’t really have a proper place to stay. It’s not safe out there either, so I was thinking she could stay at the estate for a while.”

He glanced at me carefully, then quickly added, “Of course, if you’re uncomfortable, I’ll tell her to leave immediately.”

Even though I had expected it, my heart ached.

This estate was supposed to be our home. I had designed every room. I had even hand-selected and planted the white roses in the garden.

Lewis once told me that after we got married, our life together would belong only to us, and no one else would be allowed to interfere. Yet, before the wedding could happen, he was already bringing another woman into it.

I looked at him quietly and then nodded. “Alright.”

Lewis was stunned. Clearly, all his prepared explanations had become useless. His brows furrowed slightly as a trace of unease flashed across his face.

“Eve, you’re not angry?”

I met his gaze calmly. “Didn’t you say she’s spoiled? That I should let her have her way?”

Those were the exact words he had repeated to me countless times before.

Lewis paused for a moment, then nodded in satisfaction. “That’s right. It’s good that you understand. After we’re married, you two should be able to get along.”

He looked at me sincerely and continued, “I’ve had the wedding dress redesigned, and the ring will be custom-made again. I’ll give you the grandest wedding Napels has ever seen. Everyone will know that you are my only wife, Eve.”

I listened quietly but felt nothing at all. It was because my ticket had been confirmed earlier that afternoon. My flight would depart three days from now at ten in the morning from Napels to Switz.

I would leave this place, Lewis, this relationship that had drained everything out of me. As for the so-called wedding of the century he was promising, I would no longer be the bride.

There I stood, completely calm and composed, my posture upright and radiating confidence. The softness and hesitation that used to define me had completely vanished from my face. My eyes now shone with a sharp brilliance. There was no trace remaining of the girl who used to revolve her entire world around him.I walked straight to the other end of the conference table and sat down. My expression was perfectly composed, yet entirely distant. As my gaze drifted over him, there was no shock. To me, he was just another ordinary business associate.Lewis could no longer control his spiralling emotions. He strode forward quickly, reaching his hand out in an attempt to grab mine. However, before he could get close, two of my personal assistants stepped in, blocking him from getting to me.He stopped in his tracks. His eyes were bloodshot, and when he finally spoke, his voice was raspy with long-suppressed regret. He sounded broken and almost pleading.“Eve, I know I was wrong. All these y

Quinn left, barely able to stand. Her legs felt weak, and her entire body trembled uncontrollably. She had always relied on her fragile, innocent act to keep Lewis wrapped around her finger. He had indulged her, protected her, and even favored her. However, she had never once seen that ice-cold look in his eyes before. There was no warmth or the usual tenderness he once showed her, but pure, unmistakable disgust. At that moment, the last sliver of hope in Quinn’s heart shattered. She understood, with painful clarity, that she no longer held any place in Lewis’s world.Stumbling back into her room, the jealousy and resentment she had been suppressing finally exploded. With red eyes, she began smashing everything within reach. The sharp sound of destruction echoed through the room nonstop.“Why?” Quinn gasped for breath, her eyes bloodshot as she screamed hysterically, “Why is it that even after Eve left him, he still chooses her?”She couldn’t accept being discarded right when she

With Grandpa’s guidance, I quickly took over all of the Roberts family’s businesses. I had always possessed a natural business instinct. I had picked it up from Grandpa at a young age. However, back then, for the sake of Lewis, I had willingly dimmed my own brilliance and became the obedient, gentle girlfriend who stood quietly beside him.Now that I had thrown myself fully into work, handling corporate affairs came effortlessly to me. Within just one month, I had reorganized the entire structure of the Roberts family’s businesses. Using precise business judgment, I secured several international partnerships in succession, establishing my presence in the international business world.Soon, my name began to dominate headlines across major financial and fashion media in Europa. Reporters fought to cover me, the long-vanished heiress who had returned in a stunning comeback. The news traveled and quickly spread through Napels’ upper society. Aristocrats and powerful business figures d

For the next half month, all of Napels was thrown into an endless search. No one knew where I had gone. Each time Lewis’s men returned empty-handed, the fear in him only grew stronger. Yet, he refused to give up. Stubbornly, he ordered every one of his men to keep searching. Even when hope had thinned to almost nothing, he refused to accept the reality that I had truly disappeared.Night after night, he could not sleep, and he looked a lot more worn out. Then, one night, he finally drifted into a shallow sleep, and for once, he dreamed peacefully. In the dream, he saw a familiar seaside night scene, with fireworks bursting across the sky in brilliant colors, while I stood there in a clean white dress, smiling as I ran toward him along the shore. In that moment, all his anxiety and frustrations vanished. Instinctively, Lewis reached out, desperate to pull me into his arms, but just as his fingers were about to touch mine, everything shattered. The fireworks vanished, and my figure d

The wedding music kept looping through the venue, but due to my absence, the grand wedding had to come to an abrupt end.Guests stood around exchanging uncertain glances, and whispered conversations echoed across the hall.“What happened? This is the Don’s wedding of the century, and the bride didn’t even show up?”“That can’t be right. Everyone knows Lewis dotes on Eve, and she’s a subject of envy in all of Napels. Why would she choose to run away from that kind of power and a wedding like this?”“I heard the bride was always gentle, obedient, and never the type to cause trouble. How could she just disappear like this?”Every gossip reached Lewis’s ears as he stood alone on the empty stage, the uneasiness growing heavier in his chest. He couldn’t understand it, and it didn’t make sense. For an entire month, I hadn’t argued, resisted, or caused a single scene. I had accepted every compromise, so why would I suddenly vanish without a trace? He was getting impatient and needed an

On the day of the wedding, the entire estate was lit up in dazzling brilliance. Guests arrived one after another. Social elites from across Europa, powerful financiers, and representatives from major mafia families all gathered under one roof.Standing before the extravagant scene, Lewis gave a rare smile. After the wedding, he would move into the master suite of the estate with me, and we would finally become a family. With that, all the past arguments and misunderstandings would slowly fade away.Just then, Quinn walked toward Lewis with a smile. She was wearing an ornate wedding dress, the one Lewis had spent a fortune having custom-made in France. It was a one-of-a-kind piece, originally meant as compensation for me.“Why are you wearing that?” Lewis’s voice turned icy in an instant.Quinn flinched. “Lewis… I just wanted to test it out on behalf of Eve. The dress only arrived yesterday. I was worried it might not fit properly, and since I helped design parts of the wedding, I j
