As the guards hoisted the last of the flour bags into the back of the SUV, Reagan closed the tailgate with a solid thud and then rested against the bumper. She let out a long sigh, wiping a smudge of dirt from her jeans, before turning to the older woman.

"I'm really happy we could have this day together, Lettie," Reagan whispered. The noise of the town market behind them appeared to fade, leaving a quiet sincerity between them.

Lettie paused, her hands gripping the handle of the empty shopping cart. She looked down at the pavement for a long moment, mustered her courage before finally meeting Reagan’s eyes. The older woman's face was marked with a quiet vulnerability.

"Reagan, honey..." Lettie started. "I need you to know... I am not trying to replace your mother. What happened with Maddox, the bond... it just happened. I never intended to step into your mother’s shoes."

Reagan didn't stiffen or pull away. Instead, she closed the distance between them and reached out, gently bringing her into a side hug and laying her head against the older woman's shoulder. It was such a simple act, but one that they had done many times before, but those were times before her mother was gone.

"I know, Lettie," Reagan murmured, her voice composed and warm. "And I need you to know that I am truly okay with it. Honestly."

Reagan looked away before Lettie could see the transient moment of grief in her eyes, but the fiery light that had returned to her earlier stayed intact. "Do I miss my mom? Of course I do. Every single day. But then I see my dad actually smile now. I think about those months, how he was just locked in that dark room... drowning in it. Completely lost to us."

Reagan squeezed Lettie's hands, her look snapping back, filled with absolute clarity. "When the attack happened, and everything fell apart, we all had to survive it somehow. I had Xander to hold me and keep me from losing my mind. Zyan had the Alpha duties, forcing him to keep moving, to keep the pack alive. But Dad didn't have anything left." Reagan gulped, a tear on the verge of spilling, though a smile brushed her lips. "He had nothing until he had you. You threw him a rescue when the rest of us couldn't. It helped my father heal, Lettie. And that is all that matters to me."

The roar of a diesel engine resounded through the lower basin as the heavy backhoe bit into the earth, scooping out massive chunks of dirt for the tug-of-war trench. Standing by the edge of the expanding crater, Maddox crossed his thick arms, watching with deep satisfaction as high-pressure hoses already pumped water directly into the freshly churned soil.

"Let the water go in before the hole is completely dug," Maddox declared, his booming voice projecting easily over the noise of the machinery. He grinned as the water mixed with the loose dirt, instantly turning it into a thick, sludgy brown muck. "We want it good and messy. By the time they actually get in there, I want that mud at least waist-deep and thick."

Zyan stood next to him, shaking his head with an entertained smile playing across his face. It was incredibly good to see his father looking so animated, taking genuine pleasure in the brutal, messy traditions of their kind.

Maddox pivoted, his sharp look scanning the tree line. "Do we have the rock climbing wall ready for the obstacle course and the speed challenge?"

"I have Guard Team Five on that," Xander replied, jogging up the slight incline to join them. "They’re the best we have for that kind of terrain work. They're mapping out the routes right now, making sure some of the easiest handholds are completely hidden to slow the climbers down."

Xander pointed toward the sharp cliffs jutting out of the woods. "More importantly, they know exactly where the natural rock is loose. They're going through and securing the climbing lanes to keep the visiting warriors out of any real danger. We want them challenged and exhausted, sure, but we don't need anyone breaking their neck on our territory and dying before the main events even start."

Maddox nodded in firm approval, clapping a hand on Xander's shoulder. Between the Beta executing flawless logistics and the Alpha trusting his team, the pack was finally starting to function exactly as it was meant to again.

Maddox walked along the edge of the expanding mud pit, his eyes lit with a sudden, wicked inspiration. "What about the mind games? The puzzle wall? The crossword blocks?"

He turned back to Zyan and Xander, pointing a thick finger at them. "You both know they need emotional strength just as much as brute strength. We want this course to be challenging, to be punishing. Some of these rival packs think pure muscle is all it takes to win a war. Let’s prove them wrong. Let’s show them that if they don’t have the brain to match the braun, then strength can be useless."

Maddox motioned broadly across the churning, sludgy pit. "For the crossword blocks, we build a bridge of stepping stones straight across the pit. It will need to be wide enough that when we use it for tug of war, if anyone gets pulled in, they won’t hit the stepping blocks. For every correct letter or word they solve, they get to advance. But they have to choose exactly which block to step on. If they guess wrong and step on a block without a support stand underneath..."

Maddox threw his head back and let out a booming, chest-deep laugh, clapping his hands together. "...they sink right into the mud!"

Zyan couldn't help it; he threw his head back and laughed right along with his father. Watching the fearsome former Alpha gleefully plot to drop rival warriors into a waist-deep mud bath was a sight he hadn't realized how desperately he missed.

"You know," Zyan chuckled, wiping a happy tear from his eye, "with you out here micromanaging all these traps, I could probably head back up to the office and start getting a headcount of exactly who is coming in."

"What, and miss all this beautiful sunshine?" Maddox's voice resounded across the open field, full of life and authority. He shook his head, a warm, tender smile softening his rugged features. "Absolutely not. We stay out here and get our hands dirty. We'll all get together this evening in the study and take care of the paperwork."

Her father let out a harsh, sounding laugh, it was dripping with disbelief. He looked from the towering, lethal Alpha down to his daughter, his face twisting into a mocking, desperate sneer as he tried to regain control of the situation."Ha!" he scoffed, shaking his head as if she had just told him a pathetic joke. "Am I really supposed to think that an Alpha of his caliber is actually fated to you? Stop playing these little games, Emerald. You are making a fool of yourself. Now come along and do your duty to your pack like you were told."He reached a hand out, fully expecting her to simply fold, lower her eyes, and obey just as she had done for him her whole life. But Emerald didn't move toward him. The golden light in her eyes only burned brighter, fueled by years of repressed agony finally breaking free."To my pack?" Emerald repeated, the words rolling off her tongue with a cold, sharp edge. She didn't raise her voice, but the unyielding finality in her tone made her father's ha

Reagan followed Emerald silently into the safety of the trees, keeping a her distance. Emerald didn't go far. Just past the edge of the clearing, she drifted to a stop, her arms wrapped around herself as she stared out into the dark expanse of the mountain night.Reagan didn’t push. She didn't want to crowd her space. She simply kept herself a few paces away, standing as a quiet guard in the dark, completely prepared to wait for as long as it took for Emerald to find her voice. As it turned out, she didn't have to wait very long.Emerald took a deep breath, her fingers tightening into fists. The trembling fear that had chased her into the trees was slowly being burned away by a cold realization."There is no way that man is here because they miss me," Emerald said, her voice dropping the last of its panicked shake. She turned her head, her eyes meeting Reagan’s in the shadows with absolute certainty. "There has to be something he wants."Reagan let out a short, dark chuckle. The fierc

The older man’s sudden shift in demeanor was absolutely sickening. Faced with the crushing, suffocating weight of an enraged Alpha, Emerald's father instantly abandoned his cruel arrogance. He held up his hands in a pathetic, placating gesture, plastering on a mask of false, fatherly concern."I was just trying to get my daughter to come home," he stammered, his voice dropping into a sickeningly sweet, pleading tone as he looked up at Zyan. "We... her mother and I, we just miss her so much, you see. I just wanted to talk to her."A low, vibrating snarl ripped through the clearing. It didn't come from Zyan. It came from Jeffries, who had to be physically held back by Cobb’s two youngest sons as his claws bit deeply into his own palms to keep from lunging.Zyan didn't move an inch. He didn't blink. He just stared down at the man, his head tilting a fraction of an inch to the side. He could smell the cheap ale on the man’s breath, the bitter tang of his deceit, and beneath it all, the sh

"Let go of me."The words didn't come out as a terrified squeak, and they weren't a trembling plea. They came out as a fierce, jagged snarl that scraped the back of her throat and surprised even her.Emerald planted her feet firmly in the dirt. She didn't have the towering, half-feral muscle of her Silver Paw cousins. She wasn't a lethal, born combatant like Reagan. But as she stared at the man who had stood by and watched her soul be systematically shredded—the man who had looked at her broken, bleeding pieces and called it her own fault—a dam finally broke inside her.Decades of being the quiet, compliant, terrified mouse vanished in a single heartbeat. The golden, unbroken spirit of Liora flared brilliantly in Emerald’s eyes, illuminating her gaze with a wild, breathtaking defiance. She violently twisted her arm, throwing her entire body weight against his grip. Her father's jaw dropped in sheer, absolute shock. For her entire life, his daughter had only ever shrunk away, bowing he

Across the bustling festival grounds, Reagan had just grabbed a fresh drink and was leaning casually against a wooden post, scanning the crowd. Her eyes missed absolutely nothing. Which was why she noticed the exact second the atmosphere around the Silver Paw table violently fractured. One moment, the six brothers were loud, rowdy, and deep in the throes of flirting. The next, they were moving with lethal precision. They didn't just walk away from the festivities; they cut through the crowd of celebrating wolves like a pack of highly trained war scouts closing in on a target. Shoulders squared, jaws locked, and eyes flashing with raw aggression.Reagan straightened up, instantly setting her drink down on the nearest barrel. She knew exactly who those boys were sworn to protect. Her gaze darted quickly across the field—Nesha had walked off earlier, Zyan was currently on the far side of the grounds shaking hands with a visiting Alpha, and Emerald was nowhere to be seen.Hell no, Reagan

Emerald shook her head, tears finally welling in her eyes as the deep, lingering wounds of her past threatened to reopen."My heart has led me astray before, Aunt Nesha," Emerald whispered, her voice breaking under the weight of the memory.Nesha’s expression instantly hardened—not at Emerald, but at the thought of the monsters who had broken her niece. She stepped closer, gently but firmly framing Emerald's face in both of her hands, forcing the younger woman to look directly into her unwavering eyes."No, Mouse. Your heart was exactly where it was supposed to be," Nesha said, her voice fiercely absolute, leaving absolutely no room for doubt. "It was right where the Moon Goddess told you it belonged. What happened... that was all Julia and Stephen. That was not you, dear. That was not your heart making a mistake."Nesha’s thumbs gently swept across Emerald’s cheekbones, catching a stray tear before it could fall."What they did to you," Nesha continued, a flicker of dark, protective

Maddox's gaze wandered toward the distant packhouse, his expression changing incredibly tender. "That was one of your mother's favorite things to do, you know. Standing nonchalantly against the wooden doorframe, Maddox watched the exchange in quiet amusement. For the first time in his adult life, he was just a spectator on his own territory. He didn't have to be the one barking the orders, stressing over the logistics, or managing the pack's reputation. T
