Festival Trash Duty

Standing nonchalantly against the wooden doorframe, Maddox watched the exchange in quiet amusement. For the first time in his adult life, he was just a spectator on his own territory. He didn't have to be the one barking the orders, stressing over the logistics, or managing the pack's reputation. The realization lifted a load he hadn't even known he was carrying, and before he could stop it, a low, rumbling chuckle sprang from his chest.

The sound froze both younger men in their tracks. Zyan and Xander snapped their heads toward the door, staring at the former Alpha. It was a sound neither of them had heard in over eight agonizing months.

Zyan’s position relaxed, the stiff Alpha tension melting from his shoulders as a broad, relieved grin spread across his face.

"Watch it, old man," Zyan teased, his commanding tone slipping effortlessly into the friendly teasing of a son. "Keep laughing, and I’ll put you on festival trash duty."

Maddox snorted, clasping his arms over his chest. A trace of the old, formidable Alpha lit up his fatigued eyes, glowing more brightly than it had in a long time. "I'd like to see you try, pup. You young pups think you have the whole world figured out. It's cute, it really is, boys."

Lettie and Reagan had planned a trip into town to gather all the fresh supplies they would need. As they bustled around gathering their bags, an unusual, genuine smile graced both of their faces. It seemed as if this giant, burdensome weight had finally been lifted from the pack house. Zyan, ever the protective Alpha, wasn't taking any chances; however, he had assigned two trusted warriors to escort them into town.

Xander was worried and repressing the need to go with her. This would be the first time since the night of the attack—the very first night he had moved into her room to keep her from completely shattering—that Reagan would be out of his sight for more than fifteen minutes. His wolf paced anxiously below his skin, hating the idea of the separation.

Sensing his rising distress, Reagan turned to him. She reached up, cupped his jaw, pressed a soft, lingering kiss to his lips, then patted him on the chest.

"We'll be fine, Xander. I promise," she spoke quietly, her fingers stroking gently against his scruff. "Besides, we have Jonah and Fiskey going with us. They will make sure nothing happens. And you need to stay and help Zyan and Dad get started on preparing here. Lettie and I have some serious shopping and when we get back, some serious cooking to do."

Xander swallowed his protests, nodding tightly. He stood by the front steps, his arms crossed over his chest, watching her climb into the back of the black SUV with Lettie.

As she pulled herself up into the seat, Xander's heart gave a painful, sharp squeeze. The denim jeans that used to fit Reagan perfectly against her frame were now hanging loose, almost sliding off her hips. She had withered away so much while she tried to get over her grief.

As the SUV's tires rasped down the gravel driveway and disappeared out of sight, Xander shoved his hands into his pockets. He closed his eyes and bowed his head slightly, sending a silent, quiet prayer to the Moon Goddess that these games would actually work. He needed his Little Warrior back. He missed her fire. The fire he had fought for so long. He even missed the spitfire manner she always stood up to everyone who didn’t agree with her. Because nine times out of ten, she was right in the first place.

And while Lettie and Reagan spent the afternoon making their way through the crowded town market, the guards were loading the back of the SUV with fifty-pound bags of flour, sugar, and endless pantry staples, while the men were back at the pack lands, up to their necks in logistics.

The sprawling territory behind the main packhouse was a blank clean canvas of potential, but right now, it just represented a daunting amount of heavy labor. Zyan stood with a quickly drawn map of the grounds rolled out over the hood of a truck, Xander and Maddox on either side of him.

"The obstacle course will go here, passing through the eastern woods and ending here," Zyan said, tapping a finger against the paper. "We need to get a crew out there today to inspect all the climbing walls and re-hang the heavy ropes. We need the course to be extra grueling this year. "

Xander leaned over the map; he had his brain already working overtime. "I'll take a team out there this afternoon, get them to clear out some of the bigger overgrowth. The stuff we can’t work around. But we also need to get the heavy machinery down to the lower basin. That mud pit for the tug-of-war isn't going to dig itself, and it needs to be massive. If the visiting packs are bringing their heavyweights, we need a pit deep enough to actually challenge them."

"Make sure you get the hoses run down there early," Maddox chimed in, folding his arms as he looked out over the flat expanse of grass closer to the main road. "You don't want to be trying to fill that pit the morning of the games."

The former Alpha pointed a finger toward the wide, open field. "And the Midway needs to go up front, right where the ground naturally levels out."

The Midway was always the beating heart of the games for the attendees—the families, elders, and youth who came not to bleed in the dirt, but to celebrate. By the time the games began, that empty field would be transformed into a vibrant market of vibrant tents and wooden booths. It was a tradition for the visiting packs to set up shop and sell the specific wares their territories were known for. Soon, the air would be filled permeated with the scent of spiced meats and potent home-brewed meads, and the booths would be packed with finely carved  jewelry, hand-tooled leather armor, forged iron weapons, and rare medicinal herbs from the deep territories.

Her father let out a harsh, sounding laugh, it was dripping with disbelief. He looked from the towering, lethal Alpha down to his daughter, his face twisting into a mocking, desperate sneer as he tried to regain control of the situation."Ha!" he scoffed, shaking his head as if she had just told him a pathetic joke. "Am I really supposed to think that an Alpha of his caliber is actually fated to you? Stop playing these little games, Emerald. You are making a fool of yourself. Now come along and do your duty to your pack like you were told."He reached a hand out, fully expecting her to simply fold, lower her eyes, and obey just as she had done for him her whole life. But Emerald didn't move toward him. The golden light in her eyes only burned brighter, fueled by years of repressed agony finally breaking free."To my pack?" Emerald repeated, the words rolling off her tongue with a cold, sharp edge. She didn't raise her voice, but the unyielding finality in her tone made her father's ha

Reagan followed Emerald silently into the safety of the trees, keeping a her distance. Emerald didn't go far. Just past the edge of the clearing, she drifted to a stop, her arms wrapped around herself as she stared out into the dark expanse of the mountain night.Reagan didn’t push. She didn't want to crowd her space. She simply kept herself a few paces away, standing as a quiet guard in the dark, completely prepared to wait for as long as it took for Emerald to find her voice. As it turned out, she didn't have to wait very long.Emerald took a deep breath, her fingers tightening into fists. The trembling fear that had chased her into the trees was slowly being burned away by a cold realization."There is no way that man is here because they miss me," Emerald said, her voice dropping the last of its panicked shake. She turned her head, her eyes meeting Reagan’s in the shadows with absolute certainty. "There has to be something he wants."Reagan let out a short, dark chuckle. The fierc

The older man’s sudden shift in demeanor was absolutely sickening. Faced with the crushing, suffocating weight of an enraged Alpha, Emerald's father instantly abandoned his cruel arrogance. He held up his hands in a pathetic, placating gesture, plastering on a mask of false, fatherly concern."I was just trying to get my daughter to come home," he stammered, his voice dropping into a sickeningly sweet, pleading tone as he looked up at Zyan. "We... her mother and I, we just miss her so much, you see. I just wanted to talk to her."A low, vibrating snarl ripped through the clearing. It didn't come from Zyan. It came from Jeffries, who had to be physically held back by Cobb’s two youngest sons as his claws bit deeply into his own palms to keep from lunging.Zyan didn't move an inch. He didn't blink. He just stared down at the man, his head tilting a fraction of an inch to the side. He could smell the cheap ale on the man’s breath, the bitter tang of his deceit, and beneath it all, the sh

"Let go of me."The words didn't come out as a terrified squeak, and they weren't a trembling plea. They came out as a fierce, jagged snarl that scraped the back of her throat and surprised even her.Emerald planted her feet firmly in the dirt. She didn't have the towering, half-feral muscle of her Silver Paw cousins. She wasn't a lethal, born combatant like Reagan. But as she stared at the man who had stood by and watched her soul be systematically shredded—the man who had looked at her broken, bleeding pieces and called it her own fault—a dam finally broke inside her.Decades of being the quiet, compliant, terrified mouse vanished in a single heartbeat. The golden, unbroken spirit of Liora flared brilliantly in Emerald’s eyes, illuminating her gaze with a wild, breathtaking defiance. She violently twisted her arm, throwing her entire body weight against his grip. Her father's jaw dropped in sheer, absolute shock. For her entire life, his daughter had only ever shrunk away, bowing he

Across the bustling festival grounds, Reagan had just grabbed a fresh drink and was leaning casually against a wooden post, scanning the crowd. Her eyes missed absolutely nothing. Which was why she noticed the exact second the atmosphere around the Silver Paw table violently fractured. One moment, the six brothers were loud, rowdy, and deep in the throes of flirting. The next, they were moving with lethal precision. They didn't just walk away from the festivities; they cut through the crowd of celebrating wolves like a pack of highly trained war scouts closing in on a target. Shoulders squared, jaws locked, and eyes flashing with raw aggression.Reagan straightened up, instantly setting her drink down on the nearest barrel. She knew exactly who those boys were sworn to protect. Her gaze darted quickly across the field—Nesha had walked off earlier, Zyan was currently on the far side of the grounds shaking hands with a visiting Alpha, and Emerald was nowhere to be seen.Hell no, Reagan

Emerald shook her head, tears finally welling in her eyes as the deep, lingering wounds of her past threatened to reopen."My heart has led me astray before, Aunt Nesha," Emerald whispered, her voice breaking under the weight of the memory.Nesha’s expression instantly hardened—not at Emerald, but at the thought of the monsters who had broken her niece. She stepped closer, gently but firmly framing Emerald's face in both of her hands, forcing the younger woman to look directly into her unwavering eyes."No, Mouse. Your heart was exactly where it was supposed to be," Nesha said, her voice fiercely absolute, leaving absolutely no room for doubt. "It was right where the Moon Goddess told you it belonged. What happened... that was all Julia and Stephen. That was not you, dear. That was not your heart making a mistake."Nesha’s thumbs gently swept across Emerald’s cheekbones, catching a stray tear before it could fall."What they did to you," Nesha continued, a flicker of dark, protective
