"Tell me whose child Victoria is carrying, Adrian, or I will find out myself.”

My husband’s face hardened, and for the first time since I married him, I saw something in his eyes that looked dangerously close to fear.

He reached for my phone, but I pulled it against my chest, refusing to let him take it without an explanation.

“You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into,” he warned.

“Then explain it to me.”

Adrian stared at me for several seconds before releasing a bitter laugh. “Since when did you become so interested in my private affairs?”

“Since someone sent me a photograph of you outside a clinic with your mistress and warned me to protect my unborn child.”

The words escaped before I could stop them.

Silence fell over the dining room.

Adrian’s expression changed so quickly that I almost missed it. His eyes dropped to my stomach, then returned to my face as though he was trying to decide whether I was telling the truth.

“Unborn child?” he repeated.

I pressed my lips together, instantly regretting my mistake.

“Are you pregnant, Elena?”

His voice was quiet, but there was no tenderness in it, only disbelief and something I could not identify.

I had imagined this moment so many times. In those dreams, he would smile, pull me into his arms, and promise that we would face everything together. I had even imagined him placing his hand over my stomach and asking whether I was feeling well.

Instead, he stood across from me as though my pregnancy were an accusation.

“Yes,” I answered, forcing myself to meet his eyes. “I’m almost six weeks pregnant.”

He turned away and dragged a hand through his hair.

“Does Victoria know?”

The question struck harder than a slap.

“You haven’t even asked whether the baby is healthy.”

He looked back at me. “Answer my question.”

“I don’t know what Victoria knows, Adrian. I only know that someone told me she already knows about the pregnancy.”

His jaw tightened, and he pulled out his phone.

“Stay here.”

He walked toward the windows and made a call, lowering his voice when someone answered. I could not hear every word, but I caught Victoria’s name, followed by a question about the clinic.

Then his voice became sharp.

“You told me nobody knew about this. How did Elena find out?”

My heart began to pound.

Nobody knew about what?

Before I could move closer, Adrian ended the call and returned to the table.

“We’re going to the hospital tomorrow,” he announced.

“Why?”

“To confirm the pregnancy and make sure everything is fine.”

For one foolish second, hope rose inside me. Perhaps the shock had simply overwhelmed him, and perhaps he was beginning to understand that this baby was real.

Then he added, “Until we know what we’re dealing with, you will not discuss this with anyone. Not your friends, not my family, and certainly not the person who sent that message.”

I stared at him. “You make it sound like the baby is a problem.”

“I am trying to protect this family.”

“What family?” I asked, my voice trembling despite my efforts to remain calm. “You spent our anniversary telling another woman that you wanted to leave me. You let her wear your clothes while I waited downstairs, and now you’re ordering me to keep quiet about our child.”

His expression darkened.

“You were listening outside the bedroom?”

“Yes.”

“And you thought confronting me in front of a photograph would change anything?”

I felt tears gathering in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.

“No, Adrian. I thought becoming your wife might mean something to you.”

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he reached into his pocket, removed his wedding ring, and placed it on the table beside my untouched anniversary cake.

My breath caught.

“If this marriage makes you so unhappy,” he said coldly, “perhaps we should discuss ending it.”

I looked at the ring, remembering how carefully I had chosen mine, hoping that one day the vows we exchanged would become more than words written into a contract.

“Is that what you want?” I whispered.

Adrian hesitated.

It was only a second, but I noticed it.

Before he could answer, his phone rang again. Victoria’s name appeared on the screen, and he immediately turned away to answer.

“I told you I would handle it,” he said impatiently.

A woman’s frightened voice came through the speaker, loud enough for me to hear.

“Adrian, you need to come here now. Someone has been asking questions about the baby.”

He went completely still.

Then Victoria said something that made the blood drain from his face.

“Elena must never discover who the child’s father really is.”

I gripped the edge of the table.

Adrian slowly turned toward me, his eyes fixed on my face.

Neither of us spoke, but I knew from his expression that the secret was far more dangerous than I had imagined.

And whatever Victoria was hiding, my husband had known about it long before I became pregnant.

“That DNA report is impossible.”I pushed the document away, but the words remained in my mind, refusing to disappear. My father had been dead for years before Daniel was supposedly born, yet the report claimed he was the child’s biological father.Victoria watched me carefully.“Your father wasn’t the man you believed him to be, Elena.”“Don’t you dare speak about him as if you knew him better than I did.”“I knew enough to understand why he was killed.”Adrian stepped between us. “Explain the report.”Victoria folded her arms.“Daniel was conceived before your father died. Your mother was already pregnant when he was killed, but she concealed it because she knew the Blackwells would take the baby.”I stared at her.“Then why did my mother tell me the baby was born eleven months ago?”“Because the hospital record was altered. The birth date was changed to hide the child’s real age and identity.”My thoughts raced as I tried to understand what she was saying. If Daniel was conceived b

“Your grandfather promised my baby to another woman?” I asked, unable to hide the anger in my voice. The investigator nodded, holding the lawyer’s message on his phone. Adrian stood beside me, his expression hardening as he read it again.“Who is this woman?” Adrian demanded.“The lawyer refused to give me her name over the phone,” the investigator replied. “He insists that both of you must come to the estate before he reveals anything.”I looked at Adrian.“Your family has turned my child into an agreement, a secret, and now a bargaining tool. I want this settled tonight.”Adrian reached for my hand, but I stepped away.“We’ll go to the estate,” he said. “But I need you to understand that whoever is behind this may be dangerous.”“I understood that when someone tried to shoot my mother.”He fell silent. The Blackwell estate was unusually quiet when we arrived. Two security guards stood at the entrance, and the lights inside the main building were on despite the late hour.An elderly

The gunshot shattered the silence, and my mother collapsed before I could pull her out of the way.“Mom!”I dropped beside her, pressing my hands against her shoulder as Adrian lunged at the armed man. The photograph of my little boy slipped from my fingers, landing near the entrance as the second attacker moved toward it.“Get away from her!” Adrian shouted. He struck the gunman’s arm, sending the weapon sliding across the floor. The two men struggled, knocking over an old metal cabinet, while I desperately tried to stop my mother’s bleeding.“Stay with me, Mom. Please.”She gripped my wrist, her face twisted in pain.“Listen to me, Elena. You must find Daniel.”“I will. Just hold on.”“Don’t trust Margaret. She wasn’t the only person who arranged everything.”My mother coughed, struggling to speak.“Your father left something inside the old family house. It will explain why they took your son.”Before I could ask where it was, Adrian appeared beside us.“His investigator is outside.

“Elena, open this door before I break it!”Adrian’s voice thundered from the other side, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. My eyes remained fixed on the message claiming I had a son somewhere in the city, a child I had never known existed. My hands trembled as I typed a reply.Who are you? Where is my son?The message was delivered immediately, but no response came.“Elena!” Adrian knocked again. “I know something is wrong. Please open the door.”I slipped my phone into my pocket and unlocked it.He entered, his eyes immediately searching my face.“What happened?”“Did you know my mother had another child?”His expression changed.“Why are you asking me that?”“Answer me, Adrian.”He closed the door behind him. “I heard your mother’s name mentioned in the hospital investigation, but I didn’t know she had another child.”“Someone just told me I have a son.”He stared at me.“What?”I showed him the messages, watching his expression grow darker with every line. When he reached the fi

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.Adrian stood beside me, staring at the DNA report as if the words might change if he read them again. Margaret, meanwhile, looked like a woman who had spent years preparing for this moment and still wasn’t ready to face it.“What do you mean the child’s mother belongs to my family?” I demanded.Margaret swallowed. “The report identifies the child as Adrian’s, but the birth records were altered. The woman listed as the mother isn’t Victoria.”“Then who is she?”She looked at me.“Your mother.”My handbag slipped from my shoulder and landed on the floor.“No,” I whispered. “My mother is not the woman who had Adrian’s child.”“Listen to me, Elena,” Adrian said, moving closer.I stepped away from him.“Don’t touch me. I need an explanation.”Margaret opened the envelope again and removed another document. It was a hospital discharge record, dated eleven months earlier. My mother’s warning made no sense, but the fear in the nurse’s eyes told me it wasn’t something I could ignore.I read the message again, hoping I had misunderstood it.Never let Adrian find out that the baby you’re carrying is a Blackwell heir.Adrian was my husband’s name. He was the only man I had ever been with, and there was no question about who had fathered my child.Unless my mother knew something I didn’t.“Did she leave an address?” I asked the nurse. The woman shook her head. “She only left that envelope. She seemed frightened, and she kept asking whether anyone had come looking for her.”I looked at the photograph again. My father stood beside Margaret Blackwell, both of them looking serious. The date written on the back was from twenty-six years ago, shortly before my birth. Why had my father connected Victoria’s child to Margaret?I pulled out my phone and called my mother. It rang several times before going to voicemail.I tried again.Nothing.“Elena?”I turned and fou
