“I’m going to divorce Elena as soon as I find a way to do it without damaging my reputation,” my husband said, while the woman he had always loved rested her head against his chest.
I stood outside our bedroom, clutching a positive pregnancy test in my handbag, and listened as Adrian Blackwell promised another woman the future I had spent three years praying to share with him.
“Then why haven’t you done it yet?” Victoria asked. “Unless your wife means more to you than you admit.”
“She means nothing to me, Victoria. I married her because the arrangement benefited my family, and I intend to end it when the time is right.”
The pregnancy test pressed painfully against my fingers through the leather of my handbag, but I barely noticed. All I could hear was the steady beating of my heart as the man I loved destroyed the last excuse I had made for his cruelty.
Three years of marriage, three years of waiting for him to look at me as something more than an obligation, and I had finally received my answer.
I was nothing to him.
I stepped away from the door before they could discover I was listening, but my heel caught the edge of a decorative table, sending a glass ornament crashing onto the marble floor.
The conversation stopped.
“Elena?” Adrian called.
I froze, my eyes fixed on the broken glass scattered around my shoes.
The bedroom door opened, and Adrian appeared with his shirt partly unbuttoned. His gaze moved from the shattered ornament to my face, his expression hardening when he noticed my handbag.
“What are you doing out here?”
“I came to find you.”
“For what?”
I had imagined telling him about the baby over dinner, perhaps watching surprise soften his handsome face before he pulled me into his arms. Now, with Victoria standing behind him, I could not bring myself to say the words.
“It’s our anniversary,” I answered quietly. “I thought we could spend some time together.”
Adrian glanced at his watch. “I told you I had plans.”
“With Victoria?”
His eyes narrowed. “Be careful, Elena.”
The warning hurt more than an outright denial because it reminded me that, in our marriage, I was always expected to understand his choices while he never had to explain them.
Victoria stepped into view, wearing my husband’s expensive silk robe. She smiled as though she had done nothing wrong, then rested a hand on Adrian’s arm.
“Please don’t blame him,” she said sweetly. “I wasn’t feeling well, and he only came to check on me.”
I looked at the robe, then at Adrian, waiting for him to correct her or at least show some embarrassment.
He did neither.
Instead, he turned to me. “Victoria needs me tonight. Don’t make this difficult.”
Something inside me cracked, although I kept my face still.
“I see.”
I walked past them toward the dining room, where the dinner I had prepared was growing cold beneath the lights. The small chocolate cake remained untouched, its silver decoration spelling out Happy Anniversary in letters I had carefully arranged myself.
Behind me, Adrian called my name, but when I turned, he was already reaching for his car keys.
“Don’t wait up,” he said.
The front door closed before I could answer.
I stood alone in the dining room, staring at the empty chair across from mine. Then I took the pregnancy test from my handbag and placed it beside his plate.
Two pink lines stared back at me.
I had wanted this baby to bring us closer, but now the thought of raising a child in a home where its mother was unwanted filled me with a fear I could barely contain.
My phone vibrated before I could decide what to do.
An unknown number had sent me a photograph.
It showed Adrian and Victoria outside a private clinic earlier that afternoon, his hand resting protectively against her waist. Beneath the photograph was a message that made my stomach twist.
If you care about your unborn child, don’t tell your husband you’re pregnant.
My fingers went cold as I read it again.
Before I could respond, another message arrived.
Ask Adrian why Victoria visited the clinic today. Then ask him whose child he promised to protect.
I stared at the screen, struggling to understand what I was seeing. Victoria had told everyone she was unable to have children, and Adrian had once admitted that this was the reason he could never imagine building a family with her.
Yet someone was warning me about a child connected to them.
I immediately called the number, but the line had been disconnected.
Then I heard the front door open.
Adrian was back.
I quickly slipped the pregnancy test into my handbag and turned toward the entrance. He walked into the dining room, his expression unreadable, but his eyes went straight to the phone in my trembling hand.
“Who sent you that photograph?” he demanded.
My breath caught.
He knew about the photograph before I had shown it to him.
“Why are you asking me that?” I whispered.
Adrian crossed the room and held out his hand. “Give me your phone, Elena.”
For the first time in three years, I refused to obey him.
He stared at me, surprise flashing across his face before his expression turned cold.
“Don’t test me,” he warned.
I lifted my chin, though my heart was pounding so hard I could barely hear myself speak.
“Tell me the truth about Victoria, Adrian. What happened at that clinic, and what child are you protecting?”
His face changed.
It was only for a second, but I saw the fear beneath his anger, the fear of a man who had just realized that a secret he had buried might no longer be safe.
Then he stepped closer and lowered his voice.
“Whatever you think you know, Elena, forget it.”
His gaze dropped briefly to my handbag.
“And whatever you were planning to tell me tonight, keep it to yourself.”
My blood ran cold.
How did my husband know I had something to tell him, and why was he so afraid of what I might reveal?
“That DNA report is impossible.”I pushed the document away, but the words remained in my mind, refusing to disappear. My father had been dead for years before Daniel was supposedly born, yet the report claimed he was the child’s biological father.Victoria watched me carefully.“Your father wasn’t the man you believed him to be, Elena.”“Don’t you dare speak about him as if you knew him better than I did.”“I knew enough to understand why he was killed.”Adrian stepped between us. “Explain the report.”Victoria folded her arms.“Daniel was conceived before your father died. Your mother was already pregnant when he was killed, but she concealed it because she knew the Blackwells would take the baby.”I stared at her.“Then why did my mother tell me the baby was born eleven months ago?”“Because the hospital record was altered. The birth date was changed to hide the child’s real age and identity.”My thoughts raced as I tried to understand what she was saying. If Daniel was conceived b
“Your grandfather promised my baby to another woman?” I asked, unable to hide the anger in my voice. The investigator nodded, holding the lawyer’s message on his phone. Adrian stood beside me, his expression hardening as he read it again.“Who is this woman?” Adrian demanded.“The lawyer refused to give me her name over the phone,” the investigator replied. “He insists that both of you must come to the estate before he reveals anything.”I looked at Adrian.“Your family has turned my child into an agreement, a secret, and now a bargaining tool. I want this settled tonight.”Adrian reached for my hand, but I stepped away.“We’ll go to the estate,” he said. “But I need you to understand that whoever is behind this may be dangerous.”“I understood that when someone tried to shoot my mother.”He fell silent. The Blackwell estate was unusually quiet when we arrived. Two security guards stood at the entrance, and the lights inside the main building were on despite the late hour.An elderly
The gunshot shattered the silence, and my mother collapsed before I could pull her out of the way.“Mom!”I dropped beside her, pressing my hands against her shoulder as Adrian lunged at the armed man. The photograph of my little boy slipped from my fingers, landing near the entrance as the second attacker moved toward it.“Get away from her!” Adrian shouted. He struck the gunman’s arm, sending the weapon sliding across the floor. The two men struggled, knocking over an old metal cabinet, while I desperately tried to stop my mother’s bleeding.“Stay with me, Mom. Please.”She gripped my wrist, her face twisted in pain.“Listen to me, Elena. You must find Daniel.”“I will. Just hold on.”“Don’t trust Margaret. She wasn’t the only person who arranged everything.”My mother coughed, struggling to speak.“Your father left something inside the old family house. It will explain why they took your son.”Before I could ask where it was, Adrian appeared beside us.“His investigator is outside.
“Elena, open this door before I break it!”Adrian’s voice thundered from the other side, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. My eyes remained fixed on the message claiming I had a son somewhere in the city, a child I had never known existed. My hands trembled as I typed a reply.Who are you? Where is my son?The message was delivered immediately, but no response came.“Elena!” Adrian knocked again. “I know something is wrong. Please open the door.”I slipped my phone into my pocket and unlocked it.He entered, his eyes immediately searching my face.“What happened?”“Did you know my mother had another child?”His expression changed.“Why are you asking me that?”“Answer me, Adrian.”He closed the door behind him. “I heard your mother’s name mentioned in the hospital investigation, but I didn’t know she had another child.”“Someone just told me I have a son.”He stared at me.“What?”I showed him the messages, watching his expression grow darker with every line. When he reached the fi
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.Adrian stood beside me, staring at the DNA report as if the words might change if he read them again. Margaret, meanwhile, looked like a woman who had spent years preparing for this moment and still wasn’t ready to face it.“What do you mean the child’s mother belongs to my family?” I demanded.Margaret swallowed. “The report identifies the child as Adrian’s, but the birth records were altered. The woman listed as the mother isn’t Victoria.”“Then who is she?”She looked at me.“Your mother.”My handbag slipped from my shoulder and landed on the floor.“No,” I whispered. “My mother is not the woman who had Adrian’s child.”“Listen to me, Elena,” Adrian said, moving closer.I stepped away from him.“Don’t touch me. I need an explanation.”Margaret opened the envelope again and removed another document. It was a hospital discharge record, dated eleven months earlier. My mother’s name appeared at the top, but the signature at the bottom was unfamilia
My mother’s warning made no sense, but the fear in the nurse’s eyes told me it wasn’t something I could ignore.I read the message again, hoping I had misunderstood it.Never let Adrian find out that the baby you’re carrying is a Blackwell heir.Adrian was my husband’s name. He was the only man I had ever been with, and there was no question about who had fathered my child.Unless my mother knew something I didn’t.“Did she leave an address?” I asked the nurse. The woman shook her head. “She only left that envelope. She seemed frightened, and she kept asking whether anyone had come looking for her.”I looked at the photograph again. My father stood beside Margaret Blackwell, both of them looking serious. The date written on the back was from twenty-six years ago, shortly before my birth. Why had my father connected Victoria’s child to Margaret?I pulled out my phone and called my mother. It rang several times before going to voicemail.I tried again.Nothing.“Elena?”I turned and fou
