DANTE

It was morning again and this time I woke up before June, but I didn’t get up, instead I turned to fully look at her. Her body was curled against mine, her cheek pressed to my chest, one hand resting loosely against my ribs and the room was still dark enough that the curtains had turned the morning light into a faint gray haze.

She had cried herself to sleep and I could still see the evidence of it, her eyelashes were clumped slightly from dried tears. There was a faint puffiness beneath

JUNEHe lifted my chin. “No baby, don’t apologize. I understand how you’re feeling,” he let out and the simplicity of his words made my throat tighten, he always seemed to understand before I finished explaining. “We’ve been through a lot,” he murmured. “But this is different.” I nodded. “It’s the most sensitive so I’m going to try to take things slow and easy. And that is why I don’t want to bombard you with a lot of information at once.”He took my hand and led me toward one of the chairs, I sat and he remained beside me.“Okay, let me give you the full gist on what’s happening and what we have discovered,” he let out. “And I think they’re going to manipulate us.”“Because of my mother?”“Yes, it is,” he answered honestly. My stomach twisted and everything suddenly clicked that Angelo didn’t need to convince Dante, he was trying to convince me and every decision they were going to make was going to depend on me and how I took it. My eyes dropped to our intertwined hands knowing n

JUNEThe first thing I noticed when I woke up was the silence, my hand moved across the mattress before my eyes were even fully open, searching instinctively for the warmth beside me but I got nothing. Dante was already gone as always and usually, waking up to an empty side of the bed would have bothered me, this morning, it didn’t.I lay there for a few seconds, staring at the ceiling because there was no crushing weight in my chest, no tear-soaked pillow beneath my cheek, no memory of my mother standing across the room with a stranger’s eyes and no image of her hand resting over the stomach that carried another man’s child. For the first time in what felt like forever, my mind was quiet and I felt peaceful like I had not spent the night crying. I slowly pushed myself upright and realized that the room was now washed in pale morning light, it slipped through the curtains in thin golden lines, settling across the sheets and the floor. I sat there for another moment, rubbing my face

DANTERaphael nodded slowly. “Okay.” He reached for his laptop again, his fingers already moving. “I’ll look into it and see what I can find.”The sound of footsteps coming down the stairs pulled my attention away from Raphael’s laptop and Henry appeared in the doorway a moment later. His hair was slightly disheveled, his face carrying the kind of exhaustion that sleep couldn’t fix and he looked older than he had yesterday or maybe I was only noticing it now.“Morning,” Raphael said.Enzo lifted his bottle. “Morning.”I nodded and Henry gave us a tired smile. “I hope somebody managed to sleep last night.”Three of us answered at once. “Yeah.” “No.” “Sort of.”Enzo shrugged. “Who knows?”Henry’s mouth twitched and it wasn’t quite a smile, more like his face remembered what one felt like. “I thought so.”He walked toward the coffee machine but Enzo immediately pushed himself away from the counter.“I’ll make it.” He headed toward the machine, rubbing his stomach. “I think everybody need

DANTEIt was morning again and this time I woke up before June, but I didn’t get up, instead I turned to fully look at her. There was a faint puffiness beneath her eyes, and a crease remained between her brows even in sleep, as if whatever had been haunting her had followed her into her dreams. My chest tightened as I reached up and brushed a strand of hair away from her face, she didn’t stir or move. I leaned down and pressed my lips against her forehead gently and softly as if even that small movement might disturb whatever peace she had finally found. My gaze lingered on her as the day before replayed itself in my head, her standing in front of me,

JUNEHis words echoed through the room and no one answered immediately, the question just lingered between us because that was exactly what it sounded like.Wait until Angelo decided to make another move, wait until he came with another condition and wait until he found another way to keep us standing still while he controlled every piece on the board.I looked down at my hands because I was tired, so unbelievably tired of waiting. My father straightened where he sat. “No,” father finally said, his voice was calm yet firm as he looked directly at Enzo before turning to me, his eyes softening. “I have spent years grieving for this woman and so has June. She deserves to be happy.” Something in my chest tightened and my throat burned, I looked at him, unable to speak and for a brief while, the knot inside my chest loosened and I was relieved that my father at least thought this way. A shaky breath slipped past my lips before I could stop it, I blinked once because I wanted to believe h

JUNEI waited for Dante to answer but he smiled instead. And the first thing I noticed was he was faking it. The few real ones reach his eyes but this did not.His lips curved the way they always did whenever he looked at me, soft enough that anyone else would have believed him, but I had spent too long memorizing Dante’s face to be fooled by something like that because the corners of his mouth lifted while his eyes remained impossibly still, the warmth missing from them.He reached for my hand, his fingers wrapping around mine with familiar steadiness, but there was the slightest hesitation before he touched me. “What did he say?” I asked quietly. His thumb brushed across the back of my hand. “They’re trying to manipulate us.”I stared at him for another heartbeat, watching him carefully, waiting for something else to follow but nothing did and I just knew that he was hiding something.Around us, the air had gone still, Enzo leaned against the wall with his arms folded tightly across

DANTE“Send me everything you can find out on what Angelo has been up to lately. I want to know what that fucker plans to do next before he does it.” I whispered to Enzo as he took a seat next to me.He nodded, pouring himself a drink and I lifted a brow.“Are you…”“Listening? Of course, I am boss

JUNEWhen I returned home, my father didn’t say I told you so and that alone nearly broke me again. JUNEI pushed the front door open slowly and stepped inside the house that had once felt like the safest place in the world. Now it felt unfamiliar and cold, like I was walking through a stranger’s life. The silence pressed against my ears as I dropped my bag beside the couch and stood there starin

There was no other explanation for this kind of cruelty. My father had warned me from the very beginning, and somehow that made everything hurt worse.I gripped the steering wheel so tightly my fingers ached while tears blurred the road ahead of me.I could still hea
