Rita’s POV I felt it before I saw her. That feeling. Like something bad was crawling under my skin. The kind that makes you think danger is near before you even realize it. I slowed down. The marble floor beneath my heels sounded loud. Too exposed. The air inside the Vale Group building felt thick and suffocating…. Familiar. No.Not here. Not today. I looked up slowly. There she was. Kate. Standing a feet ahead dressed in elegant clothes that screamed wealth and control. Her red hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, her lips painted in that bold shade I remembered too well. She hadn’t changed. If anything… She looked sharper. Deadlier. Her gaze locked onto mine.. Everything inside me went still. For a second, five years disappeared. I was the woman who built a life in Dubai.I was the woman who survived. I wasn't that same girl again. Standing at the bottom of those stairs… bleeding… helpless. My fingers curled slightly at my sides. No. Not anymore.I straightened my shoulders. “I didn’t expect to see you, " I said calmly. My voice didn’t shake. Good. Kate’s lips curved slowly into a smile.. but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Rita.” She said my name like it tasted bitter. Like she had been waiting for this moment. Her heels clicked softly against the floor as she walked toward me each step deliberate… calculated. “You disappeared without a trace " she continued, tilting her head slightly as if studying me. "I almost thought you died.” “Disappointed?" I asked, meeting her gaze without flinching. Her smile widened. “There’s no need for hostility, " she said lightly, though her eyes remained sharp. " After all… you left on your own.” Left. As if I had a choice. As if she hadn’t… I cut the thought off before it could take shape. “You made sure of that, " I replied quietly. Something flickered across her face. Not guilt. Never guilt. Recognition. She remembered. For a moment silence stretched between us. Thick with everything unsaid. Then her eyes moved. Slowly. Deliberately. From my face… down to my body… and back again. Assessing. Measuring. Searching. That was when I saw it. The shift. Subtle. Unmistakable. Kate stiffened. Slightly. Her smile didn’t falter. Something in her gaze sharpened… darkened… like a predator catching a scent it couldn’t quite place. “You’ve changed, " she said softly. It wasn’t a compliment. It was a warning. “I grew up, " I replied. Her eyes narrowed imperceptibly. As if that answer bothered her. She took another step too close. Close enough for me to smell her perfume. Close enough to remember the time she stood over me… when I couldn’t even move. My pulse quickened.. I refused to step back.I wouldn’t give her that. “Tell me something, Rita " she said, her voice dropping enough to make it intimate… dangerous. "What brought you back?” There it was. The real question. Not curiosity. Suspicion. I held her gaze. “Business.” A lie wrapped in truth. Her eyes searched mine. Digging. Probing. Like she was trying to peel me and find something hidden beneath the surface. For a terrifying second.. I wondered if she could see it. If she could see Aria. My heart skipped. No. She couldn’t. She mustn’t. I forced myself to stay Calm. Unbothered. Kate hummed softly, circling me slowly like she was inspecting something she didn’t trust. “Business, " she repeated. "Interesting.” Her fingers brushed lightly against her chin as she stopped in front of me again. “You always did have a way of appearing at the inconvenient times.” My stomach tightened. “Inconvenient for who?" I asked. Her smile returned. Sharper this time. “For people who don’t like business.” A chill ran down my spine. Unfinished business.bWas that what she thought this was? A return? A revenge? She wasn’t entirely wrong. She didn’t know why. She would never know. Not about Aria. Never. Kate leaned in slightly, her voice dropping lower. “Tell me… did you come back for him?” My breath hitched.. Only for a second. I recovered quickly. “Don’t flatter yourself, " I said coldly. "Not everything revolves around you…. Victor.” Her expression didn’t change. Her eyes… Her eyes burned. There it was. The crack. Small. Real. I had hit something. Kate straightened, smoothing her expression like nothing had happened. I saw it. That flicker of insecurity. That tiny shadow of doubt. Suddenly…bEverything made sense. She wasn’t just confronting me. She was threatened. By me. After five years… she still felt it. The possibility. The risk. That alone gave me power. “You should be careful, Rita " she said softly, her tone now laced with something. "New York isn’t kind to people who don’t know their place.” I almost laughed. If only she knew. “I learned that way " I replied. Her lips twitched. “Then I hope you remember it.” “Because this time… I won’t be as patient.” The threat hung between us. Heavy. Clear. My chest rose slowly as I met her gaze. “I’m not the person you pushed down those stairs " I said quietly. For the time… Kate froze. Not visibly. Not enough for anyone to notice. I saw it. That single second where her control slipped.Where memory hits. Where she realized…I remembered everything. Her eyes hardened. Beneath it… That unease returned. Stronger now.Louder. Danger. She sensed it. She just didn’t understand it yet. That made it worse for her. Because fear without answers? Was the dangerous kind. Kate stepped back slightly creating space between us again. Her mask slid back into place. Perfect.Untouchable. I had already seen what was underneath. “Enjoy your stay, Rita " she said smoothly. "I have a feeling it’s going to be… interesting.” I held her gaze. “It already is.” For a moment neither of us moved. Two women. Bound by the past. Standing on the edge of something that was about to explode. Her phone rang. The sharp sound broke the tension instantly. Kate glanced at the screen irritation flashing across her face before she masked it again. “I have things to attend to " she said coolly. "Try not to cause trouble.” I didn’t respond. I didn’t need to. She. Walked away her heels echoing against the marble floor until the sound faded completely. Then did I exhale. Slowly. My body felt tight.Coiled. Like I had just walked out of a battlefield. Because I had. This was only the beginning.I closed my eyes briefly. Kate knew something. Not everything. Enough to be alert. Enough to watch me. And that meant one thing.. I had to be careful. More careful than ever. Because if she found out about Aria.. My chest tightened painfully.No. That couldn’t happen. I wouldn’t let it. No matter what it took. I turned slightly, my gaze drifting toward the glass walls of the building. Toward the city outside. Toward the life I once lost. The war I had just stepped back into. My fingers curled slowly at my sides. Five years ago… I left broken. This time? I wasn’t leaving without a fight.Chapter 15 Rita's pov."Are you certain about this?" Ethan asked me. His voice was really low and calm.. I could tell he was tense.I did not look at him. My eyes were fixed on the papers in front of me. I had not read a word in the last five minutes."I do not do things halfway " I said to him."That is not what I asked you, " he said, pressing me for an answer.I let out a breath and put the pen down. "Then ask what you really want to know."Ethan leaned forward a little, his eyes sharp. "Are you ready for what this will bring?"Victor. The past. Everything I had buried.I froze. "I do not have the luxury of not being ready." I said. The door opened before Ethan could say anything "Mr. Hayes, they are ready for you " his assistant said.Ethan looked at me for a long time like he wanted to say more. Then he stood up."We will talk later." I gave a nod, already pulling back into myself. Because conversations like that one require honesty. Honesty is dangerous. The moment the door sh
Chapter 14 Rita’s pov "You are moving too fast." Ethan said. His voice cut through the tension in the conference room.I did not look up from the documents in front of me. I said calmly, "No, I am moving exactly as I should."There was silence. I could feel Ethan's eyes on me studying me, questioning me. "You have only been back a few days Rita.. You have already started shaking things up. The board is unsettled." Ethan said.I replied simply "Good." Because when people are unsettled they make mistakes.. I needed them to make mistakes.Ethan exhaled, leaning back slightly. "Vale Group is watching, " he said.My pen paused for a second. Victor..Of course Victor was watching.I closed the file. Finally looked at Ethan. "Let them watch, " I said. His gaze sharpened. "Your confidence is new, " he said. I corrected him quietly "It is not new. It is learned." I learned it that way.The meeting ended. But The weight in my chest did not go away. It followed me down the hallway into the
Chapter 13I walked into the room. It fell silent. That was good. It meant they were all paying attention to me. I did not. Hesitate. I took my time walking to the head of the conference table. Every step I took was steady and controlled. I was not nervous. I was confident.I owned the room. I owned my confidence. I did not borrow it from anyone. I put my file on the table. Sat down. The executives across from me straightened up in their seats. Some of them looked at each other. They were not sure what to make of me.Ethan leaned back in his chair. He was watching me with interest. He knew I had something to say.. Today I was going to say it."Lets get started " I said. "We need to talk about the merger. There are some problems with the way it is set up." A man on the left frowned. "We already looked at the numbers " he said. "No " I said. "You looked at the surface numbers. I looked at the risks."The room was quiet. People were listening to me. They were paying attention. The man wh
Chapter 12: Rita's povI didn't make it far."Rita."His voice followed me down the corridor. It was low and controlled. I couldn't escape it. I stopped. Of course I did. Running would make me look weak.I had promised myself I wouldn't run. Never again. I slowly turned around.Victor stood a step behind me. His jacket was slightly undone. His usual perfect composure was off. Not broken, not messy, just unsettled. That made him more dangerous."Yes Mr. Vale?" I asked calmly. I used formality to create distance. I needed that distance."You don't have to keep doing that, " he said. "I think I do " I replied. There was a silence between us. It was heavy. Then he stepped closer. Not too close. Close enough that I could feel his pull. That unwanted awareness of him. "I want to talk, " he said. My eyebrows lifted slightly. "We just did." "No " he said quietly. "We didn't."His tone shifted. It was less controlled. More personal. More dangerous.I held his gaze. "What do you want, Victor?"
Chapter 11: Rita’s POVI should have known better than to think things would be easy. Nothing with Victor Vale is ever simple. The conference room felt too cold and polished like him.I sat across the glass table trying to look calm and composed with my fingers resting lightly on the documents in front of me. Inside I was tense. Because Victor was here. Of course he was.He was sitting at the head of the table looking commanding and untouchable watching everything and everyone including me.“Let’s get started, " Victor said smoothly, his voice cutting through the murmur in the room. The meeting began like any other with numbers and projections and contracts. Ethan spoke beside me, confident and sharp, walking everyone through the proposal.I focused on the numbers trying not to think about him. I could feel his presence pressing against my awareness. I could feel his gaze on me every now and then.Stay focused, I told myself. Stay unaffected.“…and this merger will make both companie
Chapter 10: Rita's povI was not going to turn around. Not for Kate. Not for the person I used to be. I used to be the kind of person who would fall apart under pressure.. That is not me anymore. As I walked down the hallway at the Vale Group my heels clicked on the marble floor. I made sure every step was deliberate. I was in control. I told myself to stay calm. My heart was still racing from what had happened.. I was not going to let it show.I got to the elevator. Pressed the button. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I saw a calm and composed person. That is what I wanted to be. I wanted to be someone who was not affected by anything. The elevator door opened. I got in. Just as they were about to close a hand stopped them. I gasped. The doors opened again. He got in. Victor. The air in the elevator changed. It felt heavy and charged. I stood still. Did not say anything. I did not want to feel anything.Victor stood next to me. He was calm and familiar.. I did not want to fe
