I barely got to sleep.

At some point during the night, exhaustion had dragged me into unconsciousness for an hour or two at most, but every time I closed my eyes properly—

I saw him again.

The man in the hospital room.

The precision in the way he moved, in the way he fought.

The way he adapted instantly.

Not amateur— he had to be military.

And worst of all—

the blade.

I adjusted my cufflinks slowly in the mirror as I dressed, feeling jaw clench slightly at the memory.

Absolutely, and Nathaniel should know that. Especially since Eva had shown up trying to figure out if Margot had shared what she knew with Claire.

  • The Wife He Threw Away    CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-NINE_ CLAIRE’S POV

The courtroom felt different when we returned from recess. It felt louder. Whispers moved through the gallery with the speed of light. Reporters leaned toward one another, typing, writing, speaking rapidly into their phones. Lawyers clustered together in low conversations. Even the jurors looked different— more alert now. More curious. Dr. Ramon’s testimony had changed something. Twenty minutes earlier, we’d walked out of the courtroom with the entire room still reeling from his revelation. “A man desperate for a child will always return to the woman who can give him one.” Those words had exposed something far more important than a falsified medical report. They had exposed intent. Eva hadn’t simply lied about my fertility. She had understood exactly what she was doing. She had known Lucian’s greatest vulnerability and had deliberately built a trap around it. I looked across the courtroom. Eva was already seated beside her attorneys, whispering something.

For a moment, I simply stood there, my fingers resting lightly against the edge of the lectern, even though I wasn’t looking at my notes anymore. I knew what came next— I had rehearsed these questions dozens of times. I’d asked them aloud in an empty conference room until they no longer made my voice shake. And yet, now that I was here, now that the man who had changed the course of my life was sitting only a few feet away, the words suddenly felt impossibly difficult. I drew a slow breath. “Dr. Ramon…” I called, my voice suddenly growing a mind of its own, and becoming quieter than before. “When you handed Mr. Dhark and me that report… were you aware that I believed I would never be able to have children?” “Yes.” The answer landed with a weight that no dramatic speech ever could. I swallowed carefully before asking the next question. “Did that matter to you?” Silence. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stared at the witness stand as though hoping th

After a short twenty minute recess, everyone was back in their seats. I remained standing, since it was time to question the witness again, as the judge permitted. There was no point in rushing. Some testimonies needed room to breathe. Some truths deserved to settle before another was introduced. I waited until the courtroom had grown completely still again. Then I faced Dr. Ramon once more. “Dr. Ramon…” “You’ve testified that Ms. Sterling approached you with the idea of falsifying my diagnosis.” “Yes.” “And you accepted.” “Yes.” He nodded. “Were you forced to do so?” “No.” “Were you threatened?” “No.” “Were you blackmailed?” “No.” “So every decision you made was entirely your own?” “Yes.” I almost smiled. Dr. Ramon was keeping his own end of the deal. Just like we agreed, he didn’t try to justify himself. He simply accepted responsibility. It was exactly what I wanted the jury to see, because this case wasn’t about one evil mastermind

For a heartbeat, I barely recognized him. The man walking toward the witness stand bore little resemblance to the polished fertility specialist from more than a year ago. Back then, he’d worn tailored Italian suits and carried himself with the effortless confidence of a doctor whose reputation preceded him. Today, his shoulders were slumped, the expensive confidence gone. There were deep shadows beneath his eyes, and his suit—though still expensive—hung loosely on a body that had clearly lost weight over the past few months. His medical license was gone. His career was dead. His reputation had been reduced to headlines and scandal. Dr. Ramon climbed into the witness stand with slow, measured movements, as though every step reminded him of exactly how far he’d fallen. The bailiff handed him the Bible. “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” “I swear.” He said, his fingers trembling against the bible. His voice was so quiet that

The courtroom settled into tense silence as everyone took their seats. I placed my files neatly on counsel’s table before looking toward the gallery. Lucian wasn’t here today. And although I knew he had to be absent, a small part of me still instinctively searched for him anyway. Then I reminded myself that he was exactly where he was supposed to be—in a hospital bed, hopefully listening to absolutely none of the news coverage and, for once, doing what his doctors told him. “Counsel, are you ready to proceed?” the judge asked. Jonathan rose first. “Yes, Your Honor.” Across the aisle, Eva’s attorneys stood as well. “We’re ready, Your Honor.” The judge nodded. “Very well. Ms. Moreau, you may continue.” I stood. “Thank you, Your Honor.” The courtroom became so quiet that I could hear the soft scratching of one juror’s pen. I walked toward the evidence monitor. “Yesterday, this court heard testimony concerning the financial theft perpetrated against Mr. Lucia

The shrill buzz of my phone shattered the peaceful silence. I groaned without even needing to look at the screen. Lucian chuckled softly. “I suppose we’re back to reality.” “I’m afraid so.” I said, reaching across the bedside table and picking up my phone. I was quite surprised to see Tessa’s name across the screen. Usually, she would call Lucian— being his executive assistant. I answered immediately. “Good morning, Tessa.” “I certainly hope it is.” Her voice was as warm as ever, but I could already hear the amusement hidden beneath it. “The driver is downstairs.” She informed. I glanced toward Lucian, who just sighed dramatically. “Please remind Mr. Dhark that doctors were very clear.” Lucian rolled his eyes. “I’m coming.” “I’ll see you both shortly.” I ended the call, then slowly lowered my phone. Lucian looked quite entertained. “Are you embarrassed that people might know we spent the night together?” “I’m never embarrassed.” Lucian looked thorou
